The full Harvest moon was slated to rise during the first Marblehead High School football game and I wasn't sure how I would be able to capture it. As luck would have it, the moon appeared during halftime and I quickly found this spot near the end zone lining up the full moon between the goal posts. Currently working on shots from the game. Last night we embarked on the Finback out of Salem harbor to celebrate our amazing staff at Asthma and Allergy Affiliates (my full time job is as a physician there). I hadn't realized until earlier in the day that the moon would rise just as we motored out of Salem harbor so I came prepared with my new favorite lens and got to work trying to capture the nearly full moon from a moving boat. On Thursday, August 11th, I headed out to Crocker Park to capture the last supermoon of the year. I had plotted out the sturgeon moon's rise just to the left of the Eastern Yacht Club from this spot and decided to shoot from the benches on the small hill at the park to gain a bit of extra elevation and help separate the boats in the harbor. I knew this one was going to be tough. The biggest moon of the year (the proverbial supermoon) was due to rise 30 minutes after sunset. That's an eternity of lost light and would make for a very technically difficult shot but also made compositional options difficult. With the moon being so much brighter than anything around it, the foreground elements would end up lost short of some multi-exposure tricks. The strawberry supermoon will technically be full tomorrow morning but the timing of its rise relative to sunset favored shooting the 99% full moon tonight rather than tomorrow. With that in mind, I headed out to scout out locations starting off at the Little Harbor Lobster Company before deciding on Crocker Park. This was the other image I captured from atop Fort Sewall as the full moon rose above the clouds on Sunday night. I shared the image of a lone paddle boarder which I thought offered a dynamic contrast in the relative sizes of man and moon. I ended up favoring that image over this more classic composition but still thought this one worthy of a share. I wonder which you prefer - 'Moonrise Paddle' or 'Above the Clouds'?
I headed out tonight in the hopes of capturing the super flower full moon (when did moon names get so long?). I had checked its expected location and decided to shoot from the recently renovated Fort Sewall only I did not pay attention to the time and arrive almost an hour early for the 7:40pm rise. I ended up crossing the causeway to shoot back towards Abbot Hall but the clouds filled the sky too quickly for a nice shot there. A wider shot from the full snow moon setting on February 16th than I had initially shared. It's easy to fall into the trap of zooming as far as possible but I try to make it a point to zoom out as well to take in the full scene. Here the 100mm view offered a full pink sky as well as the expanse of landmarks including Abbot Hall, Boston Yacht Club, Crocker Park, St Michael's and Grace Community Church.
What a nice start to this Wednesday in Marblehead. I had planned out the timing and location of this morning's full snow moon setting and figured that if I set up along Foster Street, I had a decent chance (weather providing) to capture a nice image of the full moon abutting Abbot Hall.
