Old Town House Open for the Festival of Arts

It's the middle of March and far too cold outside so I went into the archive and pulled out this image from last Summer.  It's rare to have the Old Town House open its doors...let alone both of them.  But that was the case on a very warm late June day during the 2012 Marblehead Festival of Arts.  I had been at Old Town House to look at the photography works on this particular day when I noted the back doors were open.  I walked out the back and down the stairs and was happy that my camera was strapped [...]

Washington and Pleasant Street in the Fog

Did you know that Mud Puddle Toys is celebrating their 10th year anniversary?  Seemed appropriate to post this image taken in early February of this year.  I mentioned in the other black and white foggy images that I had ventured out a few days after the Blizzard passed when rain and warmth led to a rapid snow melt.  Around sunset, that combination led to great fog and I photographed Washington Street in the eerie light.  As I made my way down the street, I stopped at the corner of Washington and Pleasant in the hopes that a car would come [...]

Jeremiah Lee Mansion in the Fog

As you may recall, February 11th brought warmth and rain after the Blizzard of 2013 passed and led to some great dense fog at sunset.  I headed out as soon as I could and captured a number of images.  The best part of the fog was the diffusion it caused for the lights along Washington Street in Old Town.  One of my first images was of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion.  I knew that I would end up processing this image in black and white and there was something about the grate in the street that drew my eye.  I decided [...]

In a Fog on Washington Street

Best of Show - Marblehead Festival of Arts 2013 As a photographer I've come to really love "bad" weather. It was for this reason that I woke up without an alarm on three successive mornings during the recent arctic blast and why a smile crept on my face as the warmup and light rain after blizzard combined to make for some dense fog on Monday night.  As soon as I got home from work, a meeting at a local hospital and reading a book with my son, I headed out in hopes of capturing the wonderful mood that fog adds [...]

Backyard Picnic on Washington Street

Another image from Saturday's Worldwide Photowalk that took us from Abbot Hall down to Fort Sewall and back up Washington Street.  As I mentioned in Sunday's post about the experience, I had decided to shoot everything in these few hours with a single 100mm lens.  That was working well for isolating subjects and adding to the Experimental Friday theme.  The walk also forced me to slow down and look at areas I had previously passed without notice. This scene was one that I (and I'm sure many others) passed by previously without a second glance.  I'm not sure if it [...]

Patriotism on Washington Street

During the Festival of Arts weekend that took place not too long ago, I decided to walk down Washington Street to view the exhibit at Old North Church.  As I made my way down (with my camera conveniently draped over my shoulder), I noted the houses displaying flags.  This one was clearly the champion on the block with the long, old flag draping down.  I had to wait for the wind to calm and allow the flag to lay straight before getting this image.  I tried to bring out the detail in the house and flag when processing the image [...]

The Lafayette House on Hooper Street

Continuing with yesterday's house architecture theme, here is one of the most famous houses in Marblehead - the Lafayette House.  You'll notice the corner that has been 'cut out' of the house.  Surprisingly, the real reason for this missing piece is not known.  Theories include: 1. During a visit to Marblehead in 1824, General Lafayette's carriage could not navigate this turn and the corner was therefore removed. 2. The corner had been removed as part of an entrance for a retail shop. 3. The corner was removed due to the flow of water/sewage. 4. Coal wagons could not pass thus necessitating this [...]

On the Corner of Front and Darling Streets

I was walking down Darling Street on this late November day when I noticed the red house on the corner.  The angle that Front and Darling Streets make at their intersection is quite strong and this house had a triangular corner to make the most of that meeting point.  I positioned myself to highlight the sharp angle and considered myself lucky to have the street devoid of parked cars.  This was a particularly early sunset and, at just after 3pm, the light was already starting to get that warm glow which you see reflected in some of the windows.  There [...]

Lighting up Old Town House

Old Town House was decorated with lights on its front and back entrances so I decided to head down and try to photograph the festive scene.  With the sun setting at 4pm, however, I had a hard time getting a shot in as the light faded and cars zoomed by.  I decided to make the most of the situation and lengthened the exposure time to capture the cars zooming around Old Town House.  The headlights serve as a nice accent to the already picturesque scene. Rooftop Thursdays will return next week.  Just wanted to keep the holiday light them going [...]

Master of the Hannah

There are numerous signs on Marblehead homes depicting its former occupants but this one stands out for me.  I always liked the old wood sign juxtaposed against the brick wall and, when I saw the flowers on the vine in early October, I knew it was time to shoot it.  The hardest part was finding the right time of day when the shadows served to frame the scene.
