The Great Tree and the Perfect Storm

This image is the perfect example of the archive that I have built up over these past six years.  On July 24th, a perfect rain cloud passed over Marblehead and I was fortunate to have the camera in my trunk as I drove back into town.  I chased the cloud and great light from 7:30 until 8:10pm capturing a rainbow, beautiful sunset and a variety of images of this rain cloud. Here, I sought to include the great tree at Fort Sewall with a view out towards Marblehead Harbor and the golden light reflecting off the rain cloud.  The small [...]

Catching the Sunset at Fort Sewall

February 21st ended up being a very productive day with great light affording new compositions of Gerry Island (coming Wednesday) and this view of the great tree at Fort Sewall.  While I've taken photos from this spot before, I don't recall ever including General Glover's plaque in the frame. As the sun set, it lit up the plaque (as well as a house on the Neck) and I composed this image to include the benches looking out over Marblehead Harbor and the tree backlit by a beautiful Winter sunset.

The Great Tree and the Rain Cloud

Yesterday's torrential rains reminded me of a unique opportunity I had in late July to capture a large rain cloud over Marblehead Harbor and the Neck.  I shared another image of this rain cloud focusing on the boats off Fort Beach.  Shortly after capturing that image, I made my way to Fort Sewall to explore additional compositions. I ended up shooting the great tree at Fort Sewall from two vantage points but preferred this one with the large rain cloud easily spotted over Marblehead Neck.  You can also just make out Marblehead Light visible through a break in the foliage [...]

On the Rocks at Chandler Hovey Park

I hope no one is tired of images taken on Tuesday, June 9th yet.  I've shared six images from this one outing so far and all have differed by the quality of light, the composition or location. Shortly after I arrived at Chandler Hovey Park, I spotted a rainbow positioned southeast of the lighthouse.  The location made compositions tricky even with my widest angle lens.  I took a few photos from the edge of the park where the rocks form a cliff-like structure leading into the waters of Marblehead Harbor.  From there, I quickly explored other spots near the waters edge. [...]

Bleachers in the Fog at Seaside Park

In early December of 2011, a thick fog descended on Marblehead.  I had an image in mind at Seaside park that would work best with fog and headed down there to see if the conditions were right. As it turned out, the fog was even thicker that I had hoped for and set up the scene perfectly.  I used the metal bleachers as a leading line toward the wooden covered ones just beyond. I decided to make this a 'black and white week' so you can look forward to more images of Marblehead in black and white in the days [...]

The Float at Crocker Park

The morning of Sunday, August 24 ended up being a very productive one.  My wife and kids were out of town and I decided to wake up before 5:00am to capture the dawn from Crocker Park. Between 5:18 and 5:58, I captured a number of images from Crocker Park including views looking out over a full Marblehead Harbor with the sun rising near Marblehead Light.  This is the last image I have to share from the set. I had never taken an image from this position before and sought to include the nearby tree as well as the float at [...]

Abbot Hall and the Herreshoff Castle

Finishing off the week with this image from an incredible sunset captured in late August from Crocker Park. I've shared a few shots from this night before but, at this point, had stepped back to near the entrance to the park in order to include both Abbot Hall (with its scaffolding and large M) as well as the Herreshoff Castle. Don't forget that I will be at the Boston Yacht Club for their Harbor Holidays on Saturday from 10am to 4pm for a book signing and will have select matted prints available at discounted prices.  Hope to see you there!

Last Days of Summer in Marblehead

After capturing and sharing an iPhone image of yesterday's blue hour and overcast sunrise, I received a comment on my Facebook page that read "Feels like summer is gone".  And, she was right.  We just had our first near heat wave of the entire Summer that ended with an incredible lightning storm.  I had actually gone out on this Sunday hoping for some great clouds and light as remnants of the atmospheric disturbance but ended up with a very muted sunrise.  It did indeed feel like we were in the very last days of Summer in Marblehead. As it turns [...]

M is for Marblehead

Another image from Sunday's dawn and sunrise photoshoot at Crocker Park.  I had just captured those great clouds overlooking Marblehead Harbor in the deepest part of the blue hour and the light had not yet brightened enough over Marblehead Light and so I decided to walk up to the grassy area at Crocker Park.  Almost immediately, I found those some clouds hovering between the gazebo and Abbot Hall in the distance. As you may know, Abbot Hall is currently undergoing some restorative work on its tower and, as such, scaffolding and red netting have surrounded the iconic structure.  With the [...]
