The Chestnut Tree

In May 2016, I happened to go to Crocker Park one evening and found the large chestnut tree there to be in full bloom. I had never seen these flowers before and captured them on a few evenings in varying light and with different compositions. This is the last one I had in the 'to be posted' file. Guess I'll have to visit again in the next few days to see if it has blossomed.

Summer Sunsets in Marblehead

Last night as I walked the dog with my wife around our neighborhood, I watched the sky fill with color. I was too late to capture it from an ideal spot so I simply enjoyed the light in the evening sky and began to look forward to summer sunsets in Marblehead. That led me to this not yet published image from late June. With a harbor filled with boats, Abbot Hall punctuating the skyline and incredible light under a dramatic sky, Marblehead is a great spot to take in those summer sunsets.

First Turn for the Jackson Cup

On the last weekend in April, I headed across to the Neck and captured these one design boats vying for the Jackson Cup. The sailboats crossed in front of familiar landmarks such as Abbot Hall while competing inside of Marblehead Harbor. This shot seemed to capture three boats vying for position at the first turn - though to be honest, I couldn't follow the race well enough to judge where it began or ended...

Abbot at Dawn

On March 31st, I woke before the sunrise and raced out of the house to capture the moon setting near Abbot Hall.  I shared that image as soon as I returned home but held on to this shot taken five minutes earlier until now. I had watched the moon descend into clouds and wondered if it might reappear in the small clearing you see here. While I waited, the sun rose and bathed Abbot Hall in the soft light of dawn.  As luck would have it, a lone bird flew overhead and into perfect position to create some drama in [...]

Marblehead High School Sailing on a Spring Day

On Sunday, I had to drop off my son at a friend's house on the Neck. At the last minute, I grabbed my camera with the longest lens I had in the hopes that frostbite sailing might have returned to Marblehead Harbor.  With seemingly endless Nor'Easters and otherwise bad conditions, I hadn't had a chance to photograph the sailboats inside the harbor racing in front of familiar locations. As luck would have it, I found a fleet race was taking place and the conditions were picture perfect with bright sun overhead, partly cloudy skies behind Abbot Hall and an otherwise [...]

The Setting Blue Moon

With relatively warm conditions and a very reasonable time for this morning's moonset, I couldn't pass up the chance to try capturing this month's setting blue moon.  I had scouted a prime spot to be along Corinthian Lane and ran into another photographer there who had a similar idea. We set up and watches as the blue moon promptly disappeared behind the only clouds in the sky. As we watched, the bottom of the cloud lifted and I held out hope that the moon might show before disappearing behind Abbot Hall.  Sure enough at 6:40am, the first hint of the [...]

The Start of a March Sunset

Two years ago yesterday, I headed across the causeway to Marblehead Neck on a mild mid-March evening and captured an incredibly long sunset. I haven't had the chance to share many images from that evening so I thought I would try to do that this week beginning with this start of a March sunset.  The clarity across the water was incredible at 6:00pm when I started shooting.

First Light on Washington Street

The blizzard conveniently ended on a Wednesday and I set an alarm to capture first light on Washington Street covered in snow. I knew from my house that the snow would like have stuck to the branches of trees and sides of houses and was not disappointed to find this scene of historic downtown laid out before me. I passed this spot earlier as I started off flying my drone up to Abbot Hall for an image of the clock face caked in snow. After landing, I decided to walk up State Street and across Washington Street to find equally [...]

Abbot Hall Caked with Snow

That was quite the mid-March storm with blizzard conditions and over a foot of snow having fallen throughout the day on Tuesday. Having seen the snow stick to everything it touched, I had a few ideas for the morning and woke before sunrise to drive downtown. The roads were well plowed but still a bit tough to drive on and there was little space to park downtown while leaving rooms for the plows to finish working. I found a spot in front of Coffey's and took out the drone first to scout out the sunrise. I flew straight up and [...]
