Abbot Hall

Setting Sail

I don't recall the last time I captured an image intending to convert it to black and white. As I captured boats racing on Sunday inside Marblehead Harbor, I had to wait for the sun to poke through clouds. It illuminated both boats and the backdrop most of the time but, during one stretch, the light seemed focused on the boats while Abbot Hall was left in relative darkness under ominous clouds. With light playing center stage in this image, I did not want the colorful sails to distract the viewers eye and so I converted the color image to [...]

Fall in Marblehead Harbor

On Saturday, I was out hoping to capture scenes of foliage with a lens I had rented for the week. This was as much an exercise for the lens as it was a hope to capture the fewer boats remaining in Marblehead Harbor with spots of foliage as backdrop. Unfortunately, I found more boats than foliage and had to console myself with this shot saved by some interesting clouds overhead and decent lighting. This foliage season seems to have been limited both in duration and color...

Sweet Light on Abbot Hall

Back to Friday night's sunset from just across the causeway. I mentioned that I had spent most of my time composing images with Abbot Hall in the frame and this was my favorite of the night. The sun had started to add light to the clouds above and some sweet light allowed Abbot Hall's brick facade to glow. With this being early October, you can make out a few empty moorings. Unfortunately, it won't be long before most of the moorings in the harbor are left empty as we make our way into winter.

Over the Chestnut Tree at Crocker Park

Since discovering the beauty of the chestnut tree at Crocker Park when it hits peak bloom, I've tried to find new vantage points from which to capture it. On a late May evening, I flew my drone over Crocker Park just as the sunset hit its peak to capture this view of the chestnut tree and the Marblehead skyline illuminated by the pinks and blues of a spring sunset.

Last Days of Summer in Marblehead

As the nights turn cool, I wanted to take a look back at the last days of summer in Marblehead and found this shot captured from Brown's Island looking back toward town.  I had gone out to Brown's with my kids and met up with friends to enjoy a picture perfect Labor Day. At one point, we made our way to the tree swing and I took a few shots of my daughter swinging before turning towards this view. The juxtaposition of Abbot Hall and Old North Church makes for a great scene and the addition of boats moored in [...]

A Touch of Color

I'm sure by now your Facebook and/or Instagram feeds have been filled with photos of Sunday's epic sunset. The light truly was exceptional and I raced around the beach at the end of Peabody Lane (a public way) exploring various compositions. Immediately after the sun set, the afterglow began adding a touch of color to the high clouds overhead. I received a nice comment on my original post Sunday night pointing to a great resource about sunset colors. There they show an example of a red-orange afterglow such as this and explain it is produced by a thick aerosol cloud [...]

Stacked up for Sunset

On a mid-June evening, I headed to Harvard Street while chasing this sunset over Marblehead Harbor. I arrived in time to set up and decide on this composition that encompassed Abbot Hall to Grace Community Church with boats stacked up for sunset under the pink sky with golden light on the water. The focal length compressed and accentuated the feel of boats packed tightly in the harbor and captured the feel of a mid-summer evening in Marblehead.

Abbot over the Flares – Annual Harbor Illumination

Fireworks are used to celebrate Independence Day in just about every town in the United States but the annual harbor illumination makes Marblehead a truly unique spot to celebrate the birth of this country. I had decided to shoot the show from the causeway this year in large part because it offered some new vantage points for capturing the red flares encircling the harbor. At 8:45pm the red lights began to glow and hit their peak at 9:00pm. I was able to capture images of Marblehead Light, Fort Sewall, and this one of Abbot Hall standing tall over the flares [...]

Crocker Park Sunset

Once the storm passed and the rainbow disappeared on Wednesday night, I started looking for sunset compositions. I found myself poorly positioned to capture the best light from my position at Crocker Park and luckily had planned ahead by bringing the drone. I was up and over the waters of Marblehead Harbor in minutes and flew to this position from which to capture a beautiful Crocker park sunset.

Moon in the Clouds

On March 31st, I headed out in the hopes of capturing the full blue moon setting over Abbot Hall. When I arrived at Corinthian Lane to shoot the moonset, I noted some haze and watches as the brilliant moon began to fade into the clouds. I shot the moon in the clouds just before the details of its face were lost. As luck would have it, the moon reappeared just before dipping below the horizon. I shared that shot the same day but saved this one until today.
