Marblehead Veterans Middle School Under the Flag

In late July, I decided to head out and try to photograph the Marblehead Veterans Middle School.  I had previously scouted the area and thought I would try for a long exposure image.  While I had a few ideas in mind, none were panning out quite as I had hoped.  As I was ready to pack up and leave empty-handed, I noted the old lettering at the top of the building denoting this as the former Marblehead High School and the proximity of the American flag. I ended up on my back looking up at this scene as it was [...]

Sunflowers in Marblehead

I shared a single image of a sunflower last week and decided to share more to finish up this week.  As I mentioned then, these sunflowers were a gift from someone in town whose crop I had admired last Summer.  This crop now resides outside my office window and I took the opportunity last week to photograph some of them in great light and in various stages.  Enjoy a gallery of images below.

Half-Opened Sunflower

Anyone who has followed this site for a while might have heard me state that I am not a flower photographer.  The exceptions to that rule are cherry blossoms which will always signal the start of Spring to me and the sunflower which is tied to the warmth of Summer. Last year, I found a particular patch of sunflowers with great petals and details.  I inquired about obtaining some seeds from their owner and received a gift of seedlings and seeds earlier in the Summer.  My daughter and I went to work one afternoon carefully planting the seedlings and scattering [...]

The Iconic Beauty of Abbot Hall

One thing I have discovered over the past three years of sharing images of the Town of Marblehead is that there is incredible beauty to be found almost everywhere you look.  The downside to that beauty is that I tend to come away with a number of good images from each outing and the photos keep piling up.  As of this post, I have shared 715 images but I have 332 processed and just waiting to see the light of day.  Because of this, I have been posting on a daily basis (well, Monday through Friday) for almost two years [...]

Long Exposure – Clouds Over Devereux Beach

It has been a while since I've gone out to take a long exposure image and this Tuesday spot has been taken up by other images in the interim.  On Monday, July 15th, I found myself with an opportunity to do so once again and headed out in search of subjects.  I had an idea for a shoot at Devereux Beach and arrived there at 6pm to see if I could make it happen.  When I saw these soft wispy clouds hanging over the ocean, I changed my plan and decided to shoot over the water instead.  The three white [...]

Best of Show – Marblehead Festival of Arts 2013

I am thrilled and honored to announce that the jurors of the 2013 Marblehead Festival of Arts have chosen 'In a Fog on Washington Street' as Best of Show in photography (black and white).  This marks two consecutive years of winning Best of Show in the black and white division and I could not be more humbled that the jurors connected with this image. I will be receiving the award on tonight outside Abbot and will be sitting at Khouri's Oriental Rug & Carpeting (139 Atlantic Avenue) on Saturday from 4-5pm if you would like to stop by.  This image as well [...]

A Rowboat Named Dimples

This is another image from the sunrise shoot that took place last Wednesday.  I shared an image from this set on Monday and showed a map of the 3 hour photo shoot that followed.  This image was taken after a great breakfast at the Driftwood at 5:30 with a bunch of locals.  I wandered down to the water's edge and found this rowboat name 'Dimples' floating just far enough away from the launch to get this simple composition.  The image was already fairly monotone and I pushed that a bit by going with black and white and heightening the contrast [...]

Running to Stand Still – Across the Causeway in Marblehead

It is very rare to know that you have captured a perfect image as soon as the shutter is pressed.  It has happened to me on a few occasions over the years - once on this very same causeway and for which I received a Best of Show award.  On this particular outing, I remember watching the clouds build and break through the day only to build once more as the sun was ready to set.  As per my usual routine, I put on the puppy dog eyes and was permitted to run out to shoot while my wife (the [...]

Long Exposure – A Waterfall in Marblehead

It's been a while since I shared a long exposure image on what has become 'long exposure Tuesday' on this site.  In part, that is due to having not shot in a while.  In fact, today's image comes from almost exactly one year ago - June 17, 2012. Calling this a long exposure is a bit of a stretch considering the exposure time was really only 0.3 seconds.  However, the goal was to slow the shutter enough to essentially created the appearance of a waterfall in Marblehead.  I'm going to stop there and leave some mystery as to the location [...]

Ferris Wheel on the Last Night of the Carnival

The 2013 Marblehead High School Senior carnival came into town on Thursday and, as is always the case, brought with it cold and a bit of rain to break up the warm Spring days we had been enjoying up til then.  The weather improved over the weekend and the carnival seemed better attended than recent years.  I had little opportunity to shoot without my kids clamoring for cash but managed a sunrise session and one evening shoot. This image was taken on Saturday night.  I had arrived at 7pm and ended up parking behind Dennis Curtin and Rick Ashley (two great photographers [...]
