A Final Night at Sacks Antiques

Sacks Antiques has been a family business in continuous operation since 1899.  In 1922, the antique shop opened on State Street and has offered collectors a treasure trove of items to choose from over the decades that followed.  Now in its third generation of ownership, Stan's store is sadly closing its doors.  The final sale was happening from December 4-8 and I had ended up on State Street in the midst of a two hour photoshoot capturing scenes of fog when I found myself in front of the shop. The combination of the lamp post in front, the lights on [...]

Abbot Hall on a Foggy Night

Near the end of my two hours of capturing scenes of fog on this early December night, I found myself driving by Abbot Hall.  I had noticed the spotlights shining on Abbot Hall tower previously but they were more impressive on this night with fog serving to accentuate the light.  I found this angle offered me the chance to capture both spotlights as they hit the tower and was pleased with the added light near the front door serving as a counter to the light on the tower of Abbot Hall.

Lighting up the Fog at Chandler Hovey Park

After capturing the causeway, I made my way to Chandler Hovey Park with a particular image in mind.  I knew the holiday lights had been turned on and hoped the fog would serve to accentuate them.  As it turned out, my hunch was a good one and I shared that image last week - LINK. Before I noticed the lighthouse though, I was struck by the light behind the first tree in the park.  The fog served to accentuate the beams of light as they were split by the branches of the tree and the effect was almost unreal.  I [...]

Lights and Shadows on the Causeway

Fog Week continues on Wednesdays in Marblehead with this - the first image taken on a recent night of dense fog in Marblehead.  As soon as the fog rolled in, I knew I had to head to the causeway.  I had previously photographed a great foggy night on the causeway where I was lucky enough to capture people walking along the causeway.  I realized I had never captured the causeway from the Marblehead Neck side though and sought to rectify that on this night. I started at the end of the causeway but wasn't thrilled with the far spacing from [...]

In a Fog on State Street

This image marks the start of 'fog week' with black and white images taken on an incredible foggy night in early December.  I shared a few color images from this night last week but have to admit the black and white ones ended up being my favorites.  I had six in particular that stood out and am sharing five of those this week.  The benefit of black and white, especially when it comes to images of light and fog is that it removes the distraction of color and forces the viewer to focus on textures, lines and gradients.  I hope [...]

The Lobster Shanty

The lobster shanties that line Fort Beach Way seem to offer a wealth of photographic opportunities.  This one in particular with its great lines has been begging to be photographed and yet the light never seemed right or there was too much clutter or not enough lobster traps to fit together as a solid composition. On this particular day, I headed out when I saw just enough cloud cover and hoped I would make it in time to catch some light at the right angle off the curved roof of this particular lobster shanty.  As it turned out, I couldn't [...]

Riverhead Beach and the Causeway

I haven't shared a black and white image in quite some time and found this one waiting in the queue so thought it was a perfect opportunity to bring it out.  This image was taken on Sept 2nd at 7:50am.  This was a period of rain and fog which alternated between boring grey and beautiful moments of light.  On this particular morning, the sky seemed to be clearing so I headed out to try to capture some of that nice light. As I drove, the light seemed to be best to the east and I ended up on Ocean Avenue [...]

Watching the Storm Roll In From Cove Beach

We had what seemed like an endless run of rainy days to end August and begin September.  On this particular day (Sept 1st), the sky cleared shortly before noon and promised only a few hours of relief.  I decided to take advantage of the brief respite to head out and shoot under what should have been good light. I quickly decided to head to Marblehead Neck and then made stops at most of the public ways.  I ended at Cove Lane and stopped at the top of the chairs to survey this scene that lay before me.  As you can [...]

The Lifeguard Chair on Devereux Beach

With the strong sunset colors of yesterday's image (and the equally strong ones in tomorrow's shot), I thought I would switch to black and white for today's post.  This was taken at Devereux Beach in August while my wife was out of town and I was looking for something to keep the kids occupied.  It promised to be a warm evening so I grabbed the camera and we headed out to Devereux beach. The beach was surprisingly empty though you can see the cloud cover in this photo which kept it from being a great beach day.  The kids still [...]

Walking Home from Brown’s Island

The tides in Little Harbor and the way that roads appear and disappear between the mainland and both Gerry Island and Brown's Island have always amazed me.  I found myself at this spot in search of an image of the full moon one evening in July.  As I waited, I noted this group walking along the now submerged path from Brown's Island.  I caught a few photos as they walked through the water but this one of the leader looking back was my favorite. If you didn't know there was a path underfoot, the image would probably seem eerie and [...]
