Clouds on Fire over Marblehead Harbor

The final image from Friday night's outing at Riverhead Beach and the peak of sunset light over Marblehead Harbor.  I hadn't moved between the three images shared this week except to adjust the focal length of the camera's lens and slightly adjust the camera on the tripod's ballhead to change compositions. It never ceases to amaze me just how much the light will change in a matter of minutes and such was the case on this night as the earlier golden light gave way to a pink/orange/red mix that reflected off and seemed to set the clouds on fire.  The [...]

Golden Light Strikes Abbot Hall

Less than a minute after yesterday's image of blue skies and streaking clouds, I captured this shot of boats in Marblehead harbor and golden light striking Abbot Hall.  I had gone from the widest view on my zoom lens for yesterday's image to its most telephoto for this one. The difference from a 24mm to this 105mm view was like night and day allowing me to capture the golden light in the early evening sky lighting up Abbot Hall's clock face and weathervane. One more image from this evening outing coming tomorrow - stay tuned.

Moored in the Fog

It had been over three months since my last sunrise shoot when I decided to set the alarm clock for an early wake up on Wednesday, May 25th.  The forecast when I made the decision the night before was for partially cloudy skies and the tide looked perfect.  I really should have paid more attention to the predicted humidity since I found myself surrounded by thick fog as soon as I reached my destination at the Dolphin Yacht Club. Rather than turn around, I looked for opportunities to shoot in the less than ideal conditions.  I started off aiming toward [...]

Waving Flags at the Launch

This weekend's weather likely put many in mind for Summer nights spent on the water and I wouldn't be surprised to see Marblehead Harbor filled a bit more after some additional warm days this week.  As the harbor is still a bit empty to be as photogenic as it becomes in the Summer, I decided to look through my archive for an image to share this morning. This one comes from July 22, 2015 and a warm Summer evening with a gently breeze that you can see in the waving flags aboard the two launch boats parked at the Eastern [...]

Pools of Light in Marblehead Harbor

As the boats begin to fill the harbor, I can't help but think ahead to the Summer months with boats filling the harbor and plenty of opportunities to shoot sunsets over the water. Today's image was taken on June 24, 2015 during a very nice sunset that led to a number of 'keepers'.  I was shooting along the causeway and the wind would pick up every so often disturbing the water in the harbor.  There were a few patches of water that seemed to be protected from the effects of the wind and, as the sky filled with color, these [...]

The Working Boats in Marblehead Harbor

In mid-April, I headed out to Crocker Park at sunset as the clouds held the promise of a solid Spring sunset. I've shared one image from this night and the beautiful pink sky over Marblehead Harbor but had a few more favorites from the evening. After capturing the wide view of clouds reflecting the colors of sunset taking place directly behind me, I zoomed in and sought out this composition of the working boats in Marblehead harbor.  As pleasure boats begin filling the moorings in earnest and the yacht clubs get ready to open for the season, it's nice to [...]

Pink Fire in the Sky over Marblehead Harbor

Saturday was a busy day and one filled with incredible light.  I had gone out earlier that afternoon to shoot sailboats racing in the Jackson Cup and then returned when I saw a clearing near the horizon and high clouds with an undulating structure forming above. I debated where to stop and shoot what was likely to be a beautiful sunset and decided on Chandler Hovey Park where I hadn't captured images in some time.  I wasn't alone at the park as the benches were filled with people taking advantage of the warm Spring day to sit and enjoy this [...]

Blue Moon and Blue Boats – Marblehead Harbor

One of my favorite images captured in 2015 was a close up of the blue moon rising over Chandler Hovey Park with people clearly visible near the base of Marblehead Light watching the beautiful sight.  As is the case with many outings, that was not the only image captured on that late July evening as I tried out many different compositions to capture the scene before me. This image was taken shortly after the close up shot as the full blue moon floated above the horizon having cleared the rocky landscape of the park.  The moon came up in a [...]

Catching the Good Light over Marblehead Harbor

This Spring has certainly seen an odd start with bursts of snow and whole weeks lost to rain.  Last week as yet another rainy day came to an end, the clouds which had been so solid for much of the day began to break up and offered the first chance in weeks of a decent sunset.  As sunsets now take place after 7pm, I was able to head out after work and dinner at home to Crocker Park in the hopes of catching some good light reflecting off the clouds over Marblehead harbor. I arrived at Crocker Park to find [...]

Longing for Summer Sunsets

As the days get longer, one can't help longing for Summer sunsets over Marblehead harbor.  This incredible sunset filled with pinks and purples formed over a full harbor on July 21, 2013 and I was setup at the Pleon Yacht Club's pier for a perfect vantage point. This particular sunset seemed to go on forever (I have images starting to show brilliant pinks at 8:20 and finishing 11 minutes later).  I can't wait for a full harbor and warm days to recapture these moments in Marblehead.
