Framing the Sunset on Parker Lane

On Monday July 18th, I had returned home from work to find that my kids had been invited out for dinner and my wife was holding down the fort.  We had a few thunderstorms pass to the north and south earlier in the day and another band was making its way but likely would break up before dropping any rain (the story of this Summer).  With no kids to take care of, I decided to run out and see if the coming storm might mean some good light at sunset. As I drove, I checked the clouds on either side [...]

Golden Fog in Marblehead Harbor

I can't help but return to the view of golden fog which descended on Marblehead on July 5th.  I've shared several images from this evening  already and remarked on how the fog kept shifting as did the light to create entirely new scenes from this familiar spot. As the fog began to thicken, I composed this image including Marblehead's simple skyline and homes along the harbor with boats filling the water.  The fog created a painterly effect that was incredible to behold then and now. Just the other night, fog again rolled into town near sunset and, again, I ventured [...]

Flamingo Sunset over the Neck

On the Fourth of July, I had decided to set up at the Dolphin Yacht Club hoping for a new angle on the annual fireworks show.  Before the harbor illumination could begin, nature decided to put on its own show with an incredible pink sunset. I shot frame after frame as the color in the sky built to the peak you see here.  As I did, I noted a bring pink flamingo perched atop a boat waiting for the fireworks to begin.  The color and shape of the evening's colors seemed to mimic those of the bird and came together [...]

Boats in the Fog

This was my first view from Chandler Hovey Park on July 5th and I think my mouth hung open for a few minutes before I recovered and started capturing the scenes before me.   I initially had my favorite 24-105 lens on the camera and shot this view of the Town class boats leaving the harbor at the maximum zoom for that lens.  This was taken as the fog had reached its maximum and yet was still staying very close to the water line.  The result was the view you see in the distance of fog following the contours of [...]

Foggy Sunset in Marblehead

This was one of the last images captured on July 5th from Chandler Hovey Park as a foggy sunset lit up the gathered fog in color and light.  I had been shooting a tighter view of this as the Town class boats passed by these much larger sailboats moored in the harbor.  Once they passed, I widened my composition to include the full height of the boats and the incredible light being cast by the setting sun diffused by the fog in our harbor. I can't count the number of times I have gone out in the evening as fog [...]

Marblehead Harbor Layered in Fog

As I stood at Chandler Hovey Park capturing endless compositions of foggy scenes, I couldn't help but marvel at the power of fog to transform familiar scenes.  I've shot this composition of Abbot Hall and a harbor filled with boats countless times but with the scene now layered in fog, it became new and exciting. As the fog was rolling into the harbor, it kept thickening then thinning out.  At one point, it had thinned out in layers which added incredible depth to this view of boats and Abbot Hall surrounded by houses.  The warm glow of sunset filtered through the [...]

Racing Toward MH1 – Fine Art Photography of Marblehead

A few years ago, the concept of fine art photography took hold with grand long exposure black and white images or incredibly atmospheric views of far off places.  Try as I might, I hadn't been able to realize my version of this genre until July 5th when the perfect amount of fog rolled into Marblehead harbor only to be backlit by the setting sun. As the fog thickened and thinned out and its color changed with the position of the sun, I composed images within Marblehead harbor while keeping my eye on a group of Townies heading out.  Five Town [...]

Marblehead Fireworks and Harbor Illumination

As soon as last night's spectacular fireworks show over Marblehead harbor ended, I rushed home and eagerly looked through images trying to find the biggest and best timed explosion of color.  I was thrilled to find a twin explosion with a leading tail and focused on that image to share with all of you.  The image clearly resonated with many current and former 'Headers as it was well received by those on my various social media pages. It was only today after finishing a day of work that I was able to look more carefully at the images I captured last [...]

Red Sky at Night behind Old North Church

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had arrived at Castle Rock with some time to spare before moonrise and so I walked up to Corinthian Lane and then quickly back towards Nashua Avenue looking for a new angle from which to capture the sunset.  The clouds over the mainland were diffusing the sun's light as it descended toward the horizon and imparting a red glow to the sky.  As the old adage goes, red sky at night, sailors delight. I started off with a horizontal composition but found that I really wanted to focus on Old North Church in [...]

Under the Clouds in Marblehead Harbor

The past few days have featured perfect temperatures in the upper 70s, dry conditions and cumulous clouds passing over Marblehead.  The combination has led me to venture out on a number of occasions to shoot the cloud filled sky and, on this day, brought me to State Street Landing and its view of the harbor. I walked down to the dock floating on the water so that I could maximize the reflections in the relatively still waters of the harbor.  The sight of boats filling their moorings added to the feel of Summer on this picture perfect afternoon under the [...]
