Summer in Marblehead – Jump In!

On Wednesday, July 3rd, I tasked myself with the job of deciding where to shoot this year's fireworks show.  I visited a number of spots including Gas House beach and Fort Sewall before revisiting Crocker Park (the site of last year's shoot).  While there, I noted some great clouds developing over the harbor and started photographing the harbor filled with boats under a beautiful sky.  It wasn't long before I started taking note of two kids who were scrambling up the 'bridge' connecting Crocker Park and the float below.  Each seemed to be trying to outdo the other with impressive [...]

Frostbite Sailing in Marblehead Harbor

My best friend from college came to visit this weekend and on Sunday we decided to head out with my kids to Crocker Park.  I hadn't photographed my kids in weeks so I grabbed the camera thinking I would get a few nice shots of them outside.  We couldn't ask for better conditions as the sun kept breaking through the clouds and warming us up.  The kids climbed the rocks and I tried to capture their enthusiasm.  It wasn't long though before I noticed that frostbite sailing (or 'frostbiting') was taking place in the harbor. With the harbor still fairly [...]

The Harvest Moon Rises over Marblehead Harbor

I had little hope for capturing this year's Harvest moon.  The thick clouds these past few days and today's rain made me think that this year's attempt would be a wash...literally.  A funny thing happened at 5pm as I milled around with the kids and neighbors outside, the sun came out and the clouds disappeared.  I quickly thought of places from which I might 'shoot the moon' and headed out to Crocker Park. I got there right at 6:25pm with a moon rise scheduled for 6:27.  I was thrilled to see that the main tree had started to show off [...]

Fireworks from Crocker Park

Another Fourth of July has come and gone and, with it, another incredible fireworks display over the harbor.  I struggled in choosing a spot for this year's show.  I had previously shot twice from Chandler Hovey park and once from Fort Sewall.  After scouting areas early this week, I decided on Crocker Park.  As I did in the past two years, I sought a vantage point from which I could include the crowd.  I found that seeing people in the image helped pull me in and make me feel like I was there (well, you know what I mean). I [...]

Stacked Houses and Abbot Hall at Christmas

On December 24th, I found myself at Crocker Park awaiting the sunset and the lighting of the lighthouse's decorative lights.  As I looked back toward Abbot Hall, I noted the familiar scene of houses seemingly stacked on each other with Abbot overlooking them all.  The scene was made unique by the lit Christmas tree in that first home and I set about getting this image between shots of pink clouds and the harbor's last boats under a pinkish/purple sky.

A Marblehead Sunset from Crocker Park

For the past two weeks, the Christmas lights have been on at the lighthouse.  Having captured images of the lighthouse decked out for the holidays from Chandler Hovey Park, I decided to try to find a different composition and headed to Crocker park.  I got there a bit early and was rewarded with a great pastel-pink sunset. As soon as the sun dipped below the horizon, I went to work to capture the soft Winter light and the great clouds above.  This was one of my favorites from the set of images taken that day.  A few minutes later, I [...]

Cliff Jumping at Crocker Park

It was hot the first week in July and, as I made my way around town on a Wednesday, I figured I would shoot some kids diving off the floating dock at Crocker park.  I made my way down there but saw little to shoot until I turned around saw a group that was taking advantage of the high tide by diving off the cliff.  I climbed back up the stairs, introduced myself, and proceeded to shoot as they jumped in one after another.  This was my favorite shot of the series - a single jumper caught in mid stride [...]
