Top 10 of 2016 – #2 – Sailing Under the Sunset

This is the second image in the Top 10 of 2016 countdown to have been taken on the night of July 5th and was an easy choice for the #2 spot (it was actually #1 until December 14th when it got bounced for that top slot).  As the sun set through the building fog on this night, it created an incredible diffuse orange light.  I was shooting various compositions in this light and then spotted two townies sailing under the sunset light.  The picture perfect light and warmth of the final scene with the silhouettes of the sailors visible combined [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #3 – Rainbow Lightning at Preston Beach

In any other year, I have to believe that rainbow lighting (you can make out the lightning bolt crossing in front of the rainbow) on a pink sky at Preston Beach would have taken the #1 spot.  As it is, the perfect timing in this capture ends up at a still respectable #3 spot.  I went out on July 23rd as the thunderstorm passed Marblehead in the hopes of capturing a few bolts from Preston Beach.  I never expected the clouds to break behind me and create a vibrant pink sunset let alone for a rainbow to form from the [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #4 – Fire in the Sky

As we make our way through the top 5, I chose this image of a brilliant sunset mimicking fire in the sky as #4 on my Top 10 of 2016 countdown.  I still remember heading out on September 20th mostly because I had missed an amazing sunset the night before.  I decided to go out regardless of weather, clouds or light and ended up at Corinthian Lane with its expansive view across Marblehead Harbor as the sun set and the sky exploded. This was the most vibrant and longest lasting sunset I have witnessed in Marblehead with clouds creating the [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #5 – Golden Fog in Marblehead Harbor

Back to the Top 10 of 2016 Countdown and the first warm image to make it to the favorite list of images.  I had gone out on July 5th when golden fog rolled into Marblehead Harbor and was rewarded with the most incredible light I had seen in our town.  The light was so awesome that two images from this evening are in my Top 10 list (the other just missed the #1 slot).  The combination of fog enveloping (but not overwhelming) the familiar Marblehead skyline and the harbor filled with boats made this an easy choice for #5 on [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #6 – Goodnight Moon

Another very recent image that immediately cemented a place in my top 10 images of 2016 was this one of the supermoon and Abbot Hall captured on November 14th.  I had three opportunities to capture the historically large supermoon (beaver moon) with a moonrise over Chandler Hovey Park and a moonset against Abbot Hall.  The most challenging one took place on Monday, November 14th with the moonrise.  I had scouted out this location ahead of time but wasn't sure if the trajectory of the moon would work with the very small angle I had to work with.  To add an extra [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #7 – Smoke on the Water – Fire in the Sky

I don't think I've ever had a situation like this one where one of the last images captured in December immediately cements a place in the Top 10 list.  I had another image of sea smoke in this #7 spot but the combination of sea smoke, a sun star (formed by the break in clouds partially obscuring the morning sun) and that red glow behind Marblehead Light made this one an instant favorite.  #7 on the Top 10 of 2016 is this image of smoke on the water and fire in the sky captured on December 16.

Top 10 of 2016 – #8 – The Christmas Tree Bonfire

We moved to Marblehead in May 2008 just as the causeway was being re-built and, as such, had never witnessed the annual Christmas Tree bonfire tradition.  On January 6, the tradition was resumed and I was awed by the site of the incredible bonfire and, even more, the gathered crowd reflected in the flame light.  Here is #8 in my Top 10 of 2016 countdown - make sure you visit Riverhead Beach on Friday, January 6 for the 2017 edition of the bonfire.

Top 10 of 2016 – #9 – Clear View Across the Harbor

Today's image was taken on March 18 and shot up to #9 on my Top 10 of 2016 list for its perfect sky and incredible clarity.  I went out on this evening chasing the textured sky and hoping for a strong sunset but was struck by the clarify of the houses lining Marblehead Harbor when viewed from across the water at the Pleon pier.

Top 10 of 2016 – #10 – Tendrils of Sea Smoke at Sunrise

As we near the end of the year, I wanted to share my top 10 images of 2016 leading up to the annual New Years Day slideshow recapping every image shared on Wednesdays in Marblehead (253 images this year).  This image of tendrils of sea smoke was taken on Valentine's Day and was the most impressive display of sea smoke I had even witnessed.  The angle of the morning sun added much needed backlight to the smoke and created an other-worldly display making this an easy favorite for #10 on the Top 10 of 2016 list.

The Top 10 of 2015 – The Northern Lights and Marblehead Light

At last we reached the #1 spot in the Top 10 of 2015 Countdown and I think you'll agree this image of the aurora borealis (or Northern Lights) was an easy choice.  So many factors have to come into place to see the aurora borealis as far south as Marblehead and it needs to be a pretty spectacular show to shine above the light pollution. On June 22, a 7 kP storm hit at just the right moment (9:50pm) for me to capture the intricate greens and purples of light playing over Cove Beach and setting up a perfect backdrop [...]
