Marblehead Harbor

October Sunrise

How about a beautiful October sunrise from 2017 to start this Friday? With some of these photos, I need to look back and see why I had not chosen them to share first. In this case, the image was taken literally 20 seconds before the peak light when I zoomed in and captured what felt was the stronger photo. Enjoy this one that has been sitting in the To Be Published folder since October 7th 2017.

Dyaynu

Who knew that photographers could get tennis elbow (more accurately, lateral epicondylitis)? I’m finally accepting that the pain in my elbow is not going to disappear without proper rest. As the old adage goes, ‘physician heal thyself’, so I’m going to put away the camera for the next few weeks until this is gone. It’s going to be hard not to chase sunsets but I have plenty of images of Marblehead that have not seen the light of day and will share those in the weeks to come - just with far shorter stories to save on typing (after this [...]

Red Sun at Night

Tonight marked my third outing this week which is a huge improvement over the rest of the month of May. I had spotted a red sun setting behind the clouds and haze tonight and headed out with my longest lens to the Pleon pier on the Neck. I arrived just in time to capture a few frames of the red sun at night before it was hidden by thicker cloud cover. It was hard to balance the light of the sun with that of the foreground while keeping the red glow evident. This was my best attempt of the evening.

Moored in the Glow

I mentions on Wednesday night that I had run out of the house when the sky threatened to do something other than be gray...again. I shared the shot of Castle Rock from after sunset when the light shifted. This was the scene where I started shooting off Harvard Street.  At one point, the clouds overhead must have thinned out and let through a little sunset light which then reflected off the water in Marblehead Harbor. I was fortunate to find a single boat moored in the glow of that strange evening light.

Spring Sunset

I made it out for two sunsets last week and shared an early favorite from each outing but was happy to come away with more than a few 'keepers'. This image was captured from the end of the causeway where it turns onto Harbor Avenue on the Neck. I set up above the small unnamed beach there and had a perfect view of this spring sunset take shape with pastel colored clouds and green foliage. The harbor has been filling with boats but still has a ways to go as evidenced by the empty moorings dotting the still waters of [...]

Mid-Harbor Showers

Another impromptu outing last night as I returned home from my son's baseball game in Swampscott and then watched the sky fill with color as I walked the dog around the block. I returned home with him and then ran out and across the causeway where I spotted rain showers situated mid-harbor and perfectly centered between St. Michael's and Old North Church. I shot frame after frame as a few clouds overhead turned pink from the light of the setting sun and was thrilled with this image. It's not often that I shoot this mid-harbor view as I tend to [...]

Sunlight on the Neck

I had just about given up on any photo outings and had already chosen a photo from my 'to be published' archives to share this morning when I saw actual sunlight out my home office window. It feels like months since we last had any decent light and I didn't waste time heading out to chase a new image of Marblehead. I decided to head across the causeway to the Neck and figure things out from there but as I passed the Riverhead Beach lot, I looked to my left and saw this scene...and then drove right by (I couldn't [...]

Sky-Blue Pink

The internet is a strange and wonderful thing. I was looking for an image to share and stopped at this one of a brilliant pink and blue sky captured at dawn in mid-April. I shared two other images from this morning but, between the changing light and flexibility of composing with a zoom lens, had a number of 'keepers' from the morning. When it came time to come up with a title, I was lost. I decided to type in 'sky-blue pink' into Google and ended up going down a rabbit hole starting with finding it to be a modern [...]

Full House

I had my eye on the sky last night and was hoping for a solid sunset but some late clouds spoiled the show. Instead I dove into my 'to be posted' archive and stopped at this shot from an early October evening.  I had to check the location of this shot and was surprised to see I had captured it from Harbor Avenue just before it merges onto the causeway. With my telephoto lens near its full extension, the boats filling nearly every mooring are brought into close proximity to the Boston Yacht Club and homes on the distant shore. [...]
