Marblehead Harbor

Corker of a Sunrise

I can't recall what led me to wake up at 5am on April 14th but, as soon as I was up, I headed straight for Crocker Park and was rewarded with a corker of a sunrise. This is my third (and final) image from this morning where the sky shifted through red, pink and purple and the calm water reflected the light in the sky. I played with the composition of Marblehead Light, Childrens Island and the lone sailboat with wider and tighter shots but this was a really nice in-between that stayed in the 'to be published' folder until [...]

Sunset Gull

After nine years of capturing images of Marblehead, this might be a first. If you look closely at the sky, you'll see a sea gull lit up in fiery red light as the last of the sun's rays reflect off its feathers. The sunset gull added an interesting highlight to an otherwise pleasant sunset reflecting in the water of Marblehead Harbor. The one truly depressing aspect of this image captured on October 5, 2018...sunset took place at 6:06pm!  Enjoy the long warm days while you can.

Painted with Clouds

While looking for an image to share this morning, I had the evening news on and kept hearing talk of rain in the forecast. That may be why my eye was drawn to this image of clouds over the harbor on a mid-May evening. The sky appears to have been painted with clouds as the textures don't seem natural on close inspection. In other news, I spent this weekend working on my Marblehead 2020 calendar. I decided to include three images of the Fort Sewall tree in addition to some favorite images to represent each month captured over the past [...]

Sunset View from Corinthian Lane

Near the end of May, I was fortunate to end up on the Neck as a beautiful sunset took shape over Marblehead harbor.  This sunset view from Corinthian Lane developed slowly and hit its peak a few minutes after 8:00. We've had a few really nice sunsets lately and hopefully will get a few more with the warm weather and occasional storms predicted for the week.

Harbor Row

I shared a few photos from our Friday evening boat ride around Marblehead Harbor but just finished working on several more images from that trip to add to my 'from the water' series. As we rounded Fort Sewall and made our way into the protected waters, we spotted a lone man taking advantage of the warm weather and calm conditions for a harbor row. From this vantage point, the moorings and boats were out of the frame and I was able to focus on the single canoe with the trees of Fort Sewall to the right and Abbot Hall in [...]

Rounding the Corner at the CYC

I mentioned in yesterday's post that my family was lucky to have been invited out for an evening cruise around Marblehead harbor by good friends. After making our way down the 'main' side, we turned and headed back up along the Neck. As we were rounding the corner at the CYC, I spotted this composition and instantly snapped the shutter. I had been eyeing the view of Marblehead Light in close proximity to the Corinthian Yacht Club but the expanse of empty water left the scene feeling a bit empty. As we passed this boat on its mooring, everything about [...]

Summer Nights at Crocker Park

Our kids leave for overnight camp in the morning so, after dinner, I decided to pack everyone (including the dog) into the car and head over to Coffey Ice Cream for a couple of scoops. As we ate, we walked to Crocker Park and I took several shots of the kids and dog on the Bud's bench and the chair swing. As everyone was getting ready to leave, I took a glance at the harbor and quickly hurried over to this spot just under the flag pole to capture the great clouds that formed as a result of the hot [...]

Marblehead Fourth

This will be the first year since moving to Marblehead that I will miss the annual fireworks show. With that in mind, I thought I would share an image from last year's show that was years in the making and ended up offering me a completely new prospective on a Marblehead Fourth of July celebration. I purchased my drone several years ago and, shortly thereafter, obtained my drone pilot license for commercial photography. It was then that I realized what hurdles I would need to pass in order to realize this shot that I had envisioned. I had to devise [...]

Inner Harbor

On July 3rd, 2013, I made my way to Crocker Park to scout out the location for capturing the fireworks show that would follow the next night. I lucked out with cumulous clouds over the Neck and causeway and captured several images of a full Marblehead harbor with boats lit by the 4pm sun and clouds breaking up the sky overhead. I struggled in coming up with the proper term for this part of the harbor. Thanks to Erin Noonan on my Facebook Page for suggesting 'Inner Harbor'.
