Marblehead Harbor

Dawn of a Spring Day

I can't remember the last time I went out to capture the sunrise and this spring has not been very welcoming to early morning outings. This morning, everything seemed to fall into place and I decided to head out early to capture the dawn of a spring day. As I drove towards downtown, the sky showed its earliest hints of color. I arrived at the Landing and saw the light had built up further with plenty of time to go before sunrise.  I started off shooting from shore but then made my way to one of the floats already out [...]

The Harbor at Noon

Wednesday began with thick fog over town and I wrote off the day as unlikely to offer many photo opportunities between the dreary weather and lack of foliage around town. As the day progressed, the sun burned through the fog and clouds began to appear in the western sky. I had a few errands to run so I threw the camera bag in the trunk and drove off to the Neck. I circled the Neck not finding the image I wanted at Chandler Hovey Park and made it back down to Harbor Avenue just off the causeway where I spotted [...]

Marblehead High School Sailing on a Spring Day

On Sunday, I had to drop off my son at a friend's house on the Neck. At the last minute, I grabbed my camera with the longest lens I had in the hopes that frostbite sailing might have returned to Marblehead Harbor.  With seemingly endless Nor'Easters and otherwise bad conditions, I hadn't had a chance to photograph the sailboats inside the harbor racing in front of familiar locations. As luck would have it, I found a fleet race was taking place and the conditions were picture perfect with bright sun overhead, partly cloudy skies behind Abbot Hall and an otherwise [...]

Frozen Marblehead Harbor

As the days (slowly) warm, I didn't want to miss the chance to share images from this arctic winter including the incredible aerial view of a frozen Marblehead harbor.  This image was captured in early January after almost two weeks of sub-20 F temperatures led to a nearly complete freeze of the harbor (at least to the BYC/Landing). It never froze enough to support weight as the harbor did in the 70s but the contrast of the iced harbor against the deep blue of the Atlantic ocean on this morning made for a compelling image.

Looking out at the Harbor

As the calendar inches toward April, I have been awed by how empty Marblehead harbor remains. Much of that is due to the repeated Nor'Easters that have marked the start of spring. The lack of boats made me stop at this image in my 'to be published' folder. I captured this shot from the rocky shores of Riverhead Beach on a mid-August evening. I could not have asked for better light with the incredible clouds reflecting the late light of day and spilling that light down onto the harbor. The expansive view includes much of mainland Marblehead and the Neck [...]

First Light after the Storm

This morning's image is not from the latest Nor'Easter to drop snow on Marblehead but rather the last (or third) Nor'Easter of the season. I previously shared an image of Abbot Hall captured by the drone with its clock face caked in snow.  After flying around Abbot, I descended a bit and explored vantage points from above Washington Street in the first light of day. As painful as it is to have to deal with snow on the last days of winter as in this image or the first few days of spring (this morning), I have to admit a [...]

Frozen Harbor at Sunset

The night before a blizzard quite literally exploded over Marblehead, I went out hoping to capture the sight of a nearly frozen harbor.  While Salem harbor had frozen over several days ago, Marblehead's own harbor seemed more stubborn in succumbing to the arctic blast. Earlier on this Wednesday, I had made it out to Riverhead Beach and flew my drone over the newly frozen parts of inner harbor and knew that at least part of our harbor had finally frozen. As sunset approached, I headed across the causeway trying to think of a new vantage point having shot from just [...]

Harbormaster in the Smoke

One more new photo before the end of the year... I couldn't help but head out this morning to capture the harbor in arctic conditions.  As I drove toward State Street, I watched the thermometer on my dashboard until it settled at 1F (not counting any wind chill).  I parked at the Landing and headed out to find sea smoke throughout the harbor.  It wasn't at the incredible levels I had last seen in February 2016 but any sea smoke is worth the drive and braving the elements. I shot toward the lighthouse before spotting the sun rising directly over [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #2 Lightning Storm over Marblehead Harbor

I've captured images of lightning over Marblehead Harbor only twice previously (June 2012 and August 2015).  I had been pleased with those efforts until the night of June 27th.  I had gone out after one storm passed over town and set up along Corinthian Lane to capture the next storm headed our way. While I waited, I was treated to an incredible sunset and then this - my second favorite image of 2017. My original thoughts on this image: What an incredible night and an epic lightning storm over Marblehead Harbor.  I left the house a little after 7pm hoping [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #6 Sunset Sky over Marblehead Harbor

This is one of only two aerial images that made it into my top 10 list for 2017 which surprised me a bit.  Aerial photography using the Phantom 4 Pro opened up a whole new world of compositions for me and allowed me to capture Marblehead in ways I had only dreamed of before.  Today's image was captured on September 10, 2017 at 6:58pm.  It seems crazy to think that sunsets took place at 7pm only a few months ago as we are stuck in the short days of winter and 4pm sunsets now. On this particular day, I lucked [...]
