Harbormaster in the Smoke

One more new photo before the end of the year... I couldn't help but head out this morning to capture the harbor in arctic conditions.  As I drove toward State Street, I watched the thermometer on my dashboard until it settled at 1F (not counting any wind chill).  I parked at the Landing and headed out to find sea smoke throughout the harbor.  It wasn't at the incredible levels I had last seen in February 2016 but any sea smoke is worth the drive and braving the elements. I shot toward the lighthouse before spotting the sun rising directly over [...]

Perfect Morning at Redds Pond

As I went to bed on Saturday night, I looked out the window and noted the freshly fallen snow was sticking firmly to the tree branches with very little wind that might ruin the effect by morning.  With that in mind, I set an alarm hoping for a few snow-filled scenes to shoot on what promised to be a perfect morning. I was out of the house by 6:30am and headed straight to Little Harbor to see what the Peach's boat looked like with some snow atop the small Christmas tree. The view did not disappoint and I shot a [...]

Sunrise at the Sun Circle

I mentioned in Monday's post that I had spent more than a half hour at the beach from dawn to sunrise exploring compositions and enjoying the unusually warm late October morning.  Well after the golden color had left the morning sky and I had captured the sun rising over Ram Island, I finally made my way back up Atlantic Avenue. Before leaving, I decided to walk a few steps to the sun circle and see how the rising sun lined up with the spires found there.  As it happened, the positioning of the sun was nearly perfect and the morning [...]

Dawn before the Storm

With talk of a storm headed our way that may be bringing 40+ MPH winds and 1-3" of rain, I figured the old adage 'red sky in morning, sailer take warning' may predict a nice dawn.  With that and the very late timing of sunrise this time of year, I headed out to Devereux Beach. When I arrived, I found a few cars in the lot and a couple of fishermen casting lines into the Atlantic.  I took up my spot between them and began capturing images as the dawn built up in color.  I started off with tighter compositions [...]

October Sunrise at Ram Island

What an incredible October sunrise we had this morning!  I woke before 7 to dark skies but looked out and thought conditions might develop for a solid dawn - especially with the coming storm.  I kept thinking that and looking out the window as the sky erupted in color.  With that, I was out the door and off to Preston Beach. I knew I had little hope for catching the peak of dawn color but hoped some would hold out and that the sunrise might offer a nice opportunity as well.  I arrived at Preston as the sky shifted to [...]

Sunrise Glow over Marblehead Neck

A few minutes after yesterday's image of a perfect dawn in Marblehead, the first hint of sunrise glow began to form over Marblehead neck.  I made a slight adjustment to the composition and settings and captured the light as it built to its maximum. As it turns out, the sun never actually showed after this moment.  The clouds thickened and this light was quickly extinguished with the light of the sun hidden behind the building cloud cover.  The twenty minute span between the first light of dawn and this peak sunrise glow made the trip to Crocker Park incredibly productive [...]

Red Sun Rising

It had been a long time since I had woken up early enough to catch a sunrise but, with a storm coming, I figured odds were in my favor for a decent showing this morning.  I had originally planned to capture the moon setting from Chandler Hovey and turn around for the sunrise when that had finished.  As I drove across the causeway, the moon disappeared behind clouds and I changed my plans. I ended up at Hammond Park where I hadn't shot in ages and found a familiar seen of boats as far as the eye could see.  I [...]

Red Sky in Morning over Marblehead Rock

This Summer has flown by and my kids are both starting school today bringing an unofficial end to the best season in Marblehead.  As it happened, I haven't shot a single sunrise all Summer long and so, when I saw this image of red sky in morning over Marblehead Rock, I knew I had to share it. I took this photo on October 16, 2016 but had not had a chance to share it until now.  As the sunrise time finally climbs into the reasonable 6:00 hour, I'm hoping to venture out a bit more to capture the early morning [...]

Morning Fog at First Harbor

When I woke on Saturday, February 25th and spotted fog outside my window, I quickly pulled up the webcam at First Harbor and saw this view before me.  I quickly decided to skip coffee and ran out the door to capture the view of morning fog in First Harbor before the sun burned it away.  It was only much later that I realized the fog would win out against the fog for several hours but the scenes I captured on this morning in Marblehead more than made up for a delayed coffee and breakfast.

Top 10 of 2016 – #7 – Smoke on the Water – Fire in the Sky

I don't think I've ever had a situation like this one where one of the last images captured in December immediately cements a place in the Top 10 list.  I had another image of sea smoke in this #7 spot but the combination of sea smoke, a sun star (formed by the break in clouds partially obscuring the morning sun) and that red glow behind Marblehead Light made this one an instant favorite.  #7 on the Top 10 of 2016 is this image of smoke on the water and fire in the sky captured on December 16.
