At the corner of Kimball and Nahant Streets lies a small parking spot and an overlook. The tide was going out and I was struck by the great lines of the Corinthian Yacht Club juxtaposed against the harbor, a great cloud and Abbot Hall in the background. Then I noticed the seagull perched on the roof and knew I had to capture this image.
After exploring the Cove and photographing the boats tied to the shore, I waded a bit deeper and discovered a bed of seaweed at my feet. I carefully composed this shot to show the seaweed and rocks underneath the water and the pier overlooking the harbor with Abbot Hall seen in the distance. I used a circular polarizer to cut through the reflections in the water and show 'what lies beneath'.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
Continuing on my walk around the neck on August 20th, I made my way down to Peabody lane and ventured down the public right of way to the water. The harbor was again crystal clear, calm and warm and I took this image of the lines tying boats to shore.
August 20th began as a gray day and I just about had to force myself to get out and explore town while my wife and kids attended a birthday party. As I drove around and found myself heading to the Neck, I noted that the sky was clearing up nicely. I decided to stop at Cove Lane which is a public right of way to the harbor and was thrilled to see the tide was in a bit and the water perfectly clear and calm. Another photo while waiting for a recent time lapse to finish. While exploring the coast and the crevices that mark it, I noticed the golden light that was falling on these rocks. By chance, a sailboat was positioned at just the right spot to lead the eye from the waters below up to the top of the image. The sails caught the setting light and I knew I had a perfect Summer photo of Marblehead.
This is the last shot from our brief sail out of the Marblehead harbor. I looked back after seeing the boats headed to their races and saw the town laid out in front of me. I managed to get the entirety of the Neck with its lighthouse, the harbor filled with boats, and the mainland with Abbot standing tall. I like this perspective of our town on a warm Summer day.
Continuing on the sailing trip, we left the safety of the Marblehead harbor and ventured out in search of wind (there wasn't any) and happened upon this vessel. The light on the subtle waves was making for some incredible designs and I sought to shoot an abstract of the water leading to the single sailboat along the island.
Last Wednesday, we were invited out for an evening sail by some good friends. While I spent half the time shooting my wife, kids and surrogate parents/grandparents on the boat, I didn't miss the chance to photograph our town from the water. After all, this is a sailing town! This photo was taken the same day that I captured the cliff jumpers at Crocker park. As I mentioned there, it was a hot July 4th weekend in Marblehead and I found myself with some time at sunset. It was hot the first week in July and, as I made my way around town on a Wednesday, I figured I would shoot some kids diving off the floating dock at Crocker park. I made my way down there but saw little to shoot until I turned around saw a group that was taking advantage of the high tide by diving off the cliff.
