Sunset over Gerry Island

I had the opportunity to shoot Gerry Island a few weeks ago and managed to choose a night when the sun set near low tide.  I watched as the path emerged from the water and formed a gentle S curve to guide the eye to the small island.  Watch for a panorama view of this scene on Wednesday showing Little Harbor, Brown's Island and the homes along Front Street.

It’s Going to be a Good Day

After the purple dawn, a deep red sky, a rising red sun, and crossing over the lighthouse, the sun finished its ascent to start a wonderful Summer day. This the last of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the Marblehead Festival of the Arts as well as a showing of my photos at Lost + Found in Five Corners.  Lost + Found will be having a reception on Saturday, July 2nd from 6:30-9:30 - I hope to see you there and meet some of my readers in person!

Doing the Moondance

After the purple dawn, a deep red sky and a rising red sun, the sun crossed behind the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey park.  It wasn't until I arrived home that I was able to make out the name of the boat in the foreground...Moondance.  The irony of a boat named after the moon lined up with the rising sun is made more so by the shot I have of the Supermoon that almost exactly mirrors the sun position. This the fourth of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my [...]

The Sun Also Rises

Following the purple dawn and a deep red sky, the sun began its slow ascent just to the left of the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey park.  This was shot from Hammond park and the clouds were doing a great job of magnifying this already amazing scene.  I can't believe my good fortune to have those wisps of clouds line the red sun as it made its way up. This the third of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the Marblehead Festival of the Arts as [...]

Let There Be Light

Following a few minutes after yesterday's view of a purple dawn, the sky turned a deep red that was reflected by the boats in the harbor.  The clouds formed an incredible shape that looked a bit like the eye of a hurricane as they slowly drifted by.  I was fortunate that the wind was minimal as it allowed for a longer exposure that served to accentuate the saturation of the entire scene. This the second of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the [...]

A Sunset Between Storms

A few weeks ago, an amazing thunderstorm barreled through town.  Between bursts of lightning, wind, and rain, I noticed an incredible sunset developing.  Ran out of the house and made my way to Parker Lane on the neck.  For those who don't know, Parker Lane is one of the Public Ways in town.  I walked down to the water and grabbed this shot as the light become more vivid with each passing moment.  I liked how the light on Abbot's clock tower illuminates it in the same colors as those of the sunset surrounding it. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-s [...]

The Privateer Lynx comes to town

This week saw the Lynx come to town.  The Lynx is a tall ship inspired by one that fought in the war of 1812.  She came to Marblehead harbor on a foggy Wednesday afternoon and was greeted by a throng of spectators watching from Fort Sewall as well as wind and rain.  She fired off six cannon shots as she made her way to the harbor in response to rifle fire from the Marblehead regiment.  This image was taken during one of those shots and puts the tall ship in the context of our iconic lighthouse. Technical: Canon 50D and [...]

Island in the Fog – The Reshoot

Thank you everyone for your comments on yesterday's post both here and on Facebook.  While this began as a personal project to 'shoot the town', I am thrilled that these images have made an impression on you.  The vote tally clearly favored the 'no boat' crowd and, as luck would have it, we still had plenty of fog to work with.  I shot the above while waiting for the tall ship Lynx (that photo next week).  Used a filter to block the light so that the image above results from five shots at 25 seconds each.  No boats to remove [...]

Island in the Fog

With Gerry Island in the news recently [Reporter Patch], it seemed an appropriate time to post this shot taken a few weeks ago.  I had wanted to return to Fort Sewall and shoot this image of Gerry Island for a while but was struggling with getting the mood just right.  The way the fog rolled in and blanketed the island on this day seemed just about perfect.  The island is layed out in this 4-shot panorama without a distracting background and seems to exist in its own world.  With the four images used to make this one photo, the detail [...]

The Pier at Mooring Road

Ever since we moved to Marblehead, I've wanted to find piers to photograph.  Unfortunately, all of them seemed to be private and inaccessible.  Last week, I drove down Bradley Road to explore that part of town and, on a whim, made a turn down Mooring Road and found this great pier.  The seas were rough and I had arrived near high tide - couldn't ask for a better sky though.  The shots of crashing waves weren't quite what I had in mind so I put on a filter to cut down the light and allow for longer exposures.  The waves [...]
