Top 10 of 2020 – #10 – Basking in the Light

There are so many ways to quantify how bad 2020 has been and yet, despite everything, as we near the end, I have 77 images captured this year and shared on my Wednesdays in Marblehead site that hopefully brought a bit of joy to you. I am starting my 2020 Top 10 countdown with this shot from August 19th taken from Ocean Ave where it splits to Harbor Ave on the Neck. A simple shot and composition, captured handheld on a quick outing but it came shortly after Abbot Hall had shed its scaffolding and the late afternoon sun combined [...]

White Christmas

It won't happen this year with wind and rain in the forecast but I've been meaning to share this image of the tree at the end of a pier off Crowninshield Road taken in 2017. It was one of those picture-perfect snowfalls and I lined up the shot of the tree with Doliber Cove and then lucked out with a seagull flying by. Merry Christmas everyone.

Morning Dew and Brilliant Dawn

One more image from that brilliant dawn at Little Harbor from the morning of December 12th. I had played around with compositions and moved closer and closer to the Little Harbor Lobster Company to try to line up Marblehead Light in the distance with the boats moored in the mid-field. Rather than zooming in for a tight shot, I decided to use the morning dew on the wall to frame the scene and add more color with the water reflecting the light in the sky. This may be my last shared image in 2020. Going to work on my Top [...]

Shining Bright on the Neck

This was the scene that greeted me on Saturday night only 20 minutes after capturing Glover's Regiment firing volleys at the State Street landing. I had packed up after capturing the solemn rememberance there and drove up Front Street to Fort Beach where I hoped to capture Marblehead Light shining bright on the Neck with its holiday lights on display. I figured the freshly fallen snow would serve as a nice contrast to the dark rock face that makes up Chandler Hovey Park and was delighted to see several homes lit up to continue the bright effect across the Neck. [...]

Keeping History Alive in Marblehead

Earlier today, the sky seemed promising for a nice sunset so I made sure to get my gear in the car and headed out a little before 4pm with Crocker Park as my planned destination. I drove down Darling Street then to Front and could not find anywhere to park along the way. I continued to the State Street Landing where parking was plentiful and pulled in just as Glover's Regiment began marching towards me. I hadn't heard anything about an event but with, clouds thickening, quickly pivoted to this as plan B. I changed lenses and set up making [...]

Blanket of Snow – Christmas at Sea

On December 9, 2017, I captured falling snow on the First Harbor company's Christmas Tree in a boat floating in Marblehead's Little Harbor. That image quickly became a personal favorite - so much so that I never went back to work on images taken the very next morning after the snow had stopped falling.  The timing of the snow that year was perfect - allowing me to capture the falling flakes in mid-day and then the Christmas tree with a blanket of snow at sunrise the next morning. Unfortunately, the timing and predicted severity of today's snow storm meant that [...]

Little Harbor Dawn

The light really doesn't get much better than this view of Little Harbor at dawn... On Saturday, December 12th, I woke before the dawn and headed down to Little Harbor hoping the old adage 'red sky in morning, sailor take warning' might prove true with predictions of strong rains later in the day. I arrived to find a mostly empty harbor and the first hint of light in the sky. I started shooting when the lights turned on in one of the working boats headed out for the day and kept at it as the sky brightened. Twenty minutes after [...]

Christmas in Harbor

The now annual tradition of the First Harbor Company placing a Christmas tree in a boat to float in the harbor has drawn a number of photographers so far this year. I was among three shooting away on Saturday morning but have to admit this was the last shot I had taken on this day. I arrived in front of the Little Harbor Lobster Company before dawn in the hopes of capturing the small boat and its tree lit up but the lights weren't on and so I decided to wait for dawn. When dawn broke, the boat almost became [...]

First Harbor Dawn

I just couldn't wait until Monday to start sharing images from this morning's beautiful dawn over first harbor. I arrived at 6:30am and watched as the light began to break over the horizon. As it did, the captain of Stormy Weather turned on the lights to get ready to motor out for the morning. With the lights on the boat reflecting in the still waters and that small Christmas tree in the First Harbor boat floating on its own, I had an instant favorite. You can just make out the crescent moon in the sky but clouds shifted over it [...]

Festival of Lights at Abbot Hall

This weekend, the Marblehead Festival of Arts had planned an Artisans Marketplace which unfortunately was cancelled due to weather. As part of that, they also commissioned a number of ice sculptures to adorn the upper grounds of Abbot Hall. On Sunday afternoon, I visited with my camera and found a beautiful menorah sculpture lined up in front of Abbot Hall. The only hard part was that this sculpture was about 12 inches from the large flag pole and thus it was nearly impossible to get a proper composition. I ended up having to use my widest lens and held the [...]
