This Too Shall Pass

On Friday March 13th, I chased a passing storm and ended up on Front Street from where I started off shooting a tight composition of the lighthouse and Neck with some waves breaking on the rocks of Fort Beach. I later zoomed out and captured the full view including the missing Great Tree and shared that image earlier. I came back to this image this weekend after my first week 'off' work. As a part-owner of our Allergy practice, I have not been off at all. We have tried to pivot to telemedicine all while grappling with the very real [...]

Gone but not Forgotten

On Friday, March 13th, on what would end up being my last real day of work for the forseeable future, I headed out at 5:30pm to chase some light. I had no destination in mind as I drove down Pleasant Street then State. I pulled into and out of the Landing lot and then headed down Front Street until I pulled over at Fort Beach. That spot offered me the best view of the interesting clouds and light over Chandler Hovey Park and I started off shooting a tight composition of that section of this image with my zoom extended. [...]

Morning Swim at Grace Oliver Beach

I thought I would continue with last week's snow theme for today's image from Grace Oliver Beach. This shot was captured on December 10, 2017. I had shared a few images of this great morning sky over Brown's Island but never this shot that included the freshly fallen snow on the outflow pipe. As a bonus, I managed to find a flock of seagulls appearing to ready themselves for a morning swim in the frigid waters.

Evening Glow on Abbot Hall’s weathervane

I was surprised to find that today's image as well as the one shared on Wednesday were both captured in the month of March - this one was taken almost exactly one year ago on March 4, 2019.  I hope I'm not jinxing us and this very mild winter by sharing images of snow from past years. I lucked out with nice light for this shot but my favorite aspect of it is the glow on Abbot Hall's weathervane reflecting the last rays of sunlight on this early March evening. If you would like to see these images without realizing [...]

Dusting of Snow on Downtown Marblehead

Today's image comes from my 'to be posted' archive and continues the theme of images of snow in Marblehead from past winters. This aerial shot was captured on the morning of March 14, 2018 after a dusting of snow fell and I was able to capture historic downtown Marblehead with its familiar landmarks blanketed in white. If you would like to see these images without realizing on FB/IG, I added an easy sign up for my daily and/or weekly email digests that include all images posted to Wednesdays in Marblehead. You can sign up below any of my current/prior posts. [...]

Pond View at Sunset

It's been a while since I posted any images of Marblehead. This was partly meant as a break to allow me to recharge and ended up being great timing as our winter without snow did not offer many opportunities for photography over the past few months. With the lack of snow this season, I went through my archive looking for images of Marblehead in the snow and found five to share this week and next. I don't plan on jumping back to the daily posts just yet though which means the Facebook and Instagram algorithms may not show these posts [...]

Snow Moon in a Winter without Snow

I lucked out with tonight's outing to capture the snow moon rising when I contacted my book designer and was invited over to shoot from her husband's third floor office window. Not only did I have a perfect vantage point, but I was able to escape the brutally cold wind that would have left me cold but also caused the camera and lens to move as well impacting the final image. The timing of the full moonrise wasn't ideal as the moon climbed above the horizon more than 30 minutes before sunset. As it happened, the moon had to rise [...]

Glover’s March to Old Burial Hill

It's been nearly a month since I last posted an image here (the epiphany bonfire). I had decided to take a break or at least slow down the photography and, as it happens, I chose to do so during the least photogenic winter in the past 10 years... Tonight, however, I headed out before 5pm to join Glover's Regiment annual march from Old Town House to Old Burial Hill on the anniversary of General John Glover's death (from hepatitis I learned tonight). I remembered how difficult it was to shoot the lantern procession and gathering at Old Burial Hill when [...]

Epiphany Tree Burning – Tonight at Riverhead Beach

The annual Epiphany tree burning takes place tonight (Monday, January 6) at 6:30pm at Riverhead Beach. The town has been collecting Christmas trees for the past two weeks and piling them at Riverhead for this annual bonfire tradition. Watching trees burn raises a number of environmental concerns but, interestingly, the bonfire is far preferable to placing them in a landfill and is pretty much net carbon neutral according to The Carbon Trust: For a 2 metre tall real Christmas tree, with no roots, the carbon footprint is 16kg CO2e if it ends up in landfill. This is because the tree [...]

Top 10 of 2019 – #1 – Orange Sky over Marblehead Harbor

I hate to follow one sunset shot with another but these did end up being my two favorite images of 2019. Today's shot was captured on September 4th as a storm passed over Marblehead and then the Neck. I had gone out to Crocker Park to chase the clouds and actually had been hoping for a rainbow. I remember waiting for the rain to pass under the covered benches near the seal sculpture and then, as the rain ceased, the sky took on an odd orange glow. I couldn't take in the full scene even with my widest lens and [...]
