Old North Church and the Vernal Worm Moon

On Wednesday morning, the super vernal worm moon was due to set under clear conditions and I had planned out a spot at Chandler Hovey Park from which to capture this image. I have many images of the full moon setting besides Abbot Hall but have only managed to capture the moonset beside Old North Church on two other occasions - and one was marred by clouds. I could not have asked for better conditions or light with the moonset taking place just before sunrise. The vernal worm moon (so named as this is the first day of spring) set [...]

Vernal Worm Moon over Childrens Island

The super full vernal worm moon rose tonight over Childrens Island and I wasn't the only one who headed out to Fort Sewall to watch (and capture) the brilliant sight. I arrived to find much colder and windier conditions than expected and setup among a few other brave souls there to see the first full moon to rise on the spring vernal equinox in years. It took a while for the full moon to appear over the haze but I felt fortunate it did so while still in the frame I had settled on. I wanted to include the larger [...]

Frostbite Sailing past Old North Church

Spring is here!  If all goes according to plan, I will be capturing the full moon setting on the spring equinox near Old North Church just as this post goes live in the morning. We are in peak frostbite sailing season but I haven't had a chance to make it out to capture the boats crossing in front of familiar landmarks this year. Between the morning plans and the lack of any recent frostbite sailing images, I thought this would make for a nice image to start the day.

Power of the Storm

It's hard to believe that only a year ago, this was the scene along Front Street as a massive storm caused incredible damage to this section of town. I drove down Front Street on Sunday to see how repairs were coming along and was thrilled to see new guardrails in place (metal) and the rebuilt stairs leading down to Fort Beach.

Crocker Park Sunset

I love this spot atop the granite hill at Crocker Park from which there is a perfect vantage point of Abbot Hall standing tall above the houses. I last visited this spot in late October and thought that, with Spring nearly here, it would make for a good image to start the week.

Ocean Wave

I spent New Years Day at Devereux Beach capturing wave after wave coming ashore as the dawn broke. I alternated between fast exposures to capture detail in the water and longer ones that highlighted the sense of movement in the ocean. This was one of my favorites from the set with an ocean wave about to curl onto itself before hitting the shore and the sand reflecting the brightness of the morning sky.

Glowing on the Neck

I mentioned in Monday's post of the sun pillar that I had set out to shoot the sunset after a snowstorm on March 4th and gotten a few nice shots from my perch near the EYC pier. As the sun dipped lower in the sky and under a bank of high clouds, I spotted these houses glowing on the Neck.  I quickly moved my tripod over and capture the view of the stately homes on the Neck as well as the Corinthian Yacht Club and Marblehead light all glowing with fresh fallen snow serving to accentuate the colors.

Star and Steeples under a Pink Sky

Today's image comes from late December and a sunrise outing to capture the setting moon. While waiting for the moon to drop in the sky, I kept myself busy shooting scenes of the Marblehead skyline from across the harbor. I first shot (and shared) a wider view of a pink-purple sky but then decided to zoom in and focus on the star atop the crane standing between the St. Michaels steeple and that of Grace Community Church. If you look carefully, you'll notice the star glowing in the dawn light with a seamless pink sky serving as a perfect backdrop.

Sun Pillar over Marblehead Harbor

In over ten years of living in and photographing the town of Marblehead, I had never before captured a sun pillar. When I was out on March 4th to shoot the sunset after a snowfall, I thought I had scored with images of Abbot and Crocker Park as well as another of the Neck (I'll share that one on Wednesday).  In fact, the way the clouds were breaking, I was about ready to pack up my gear until I spotted the vertical shaft of light forming a sun pillar. I had to look up the phenomenon and realized why I [...]

Old Town House – 1727

Another shot from the morning in mid-February when I ventured into historic downtown Marblehead to play with a new lens. I took this one minute before the corner shot of State and Washington Streets. Here the lens was opened to its maximum aperture as I was curious if I would get much of that 'bokeh' effect with such a wide lens. The result was subtle... What I noticed more was the gleaming sign above the green doors of Old Town House - 1727. Hard to believe we are only 8 years out from the 300-year anniversary of this yellow sided [...]
