Cherry Blossoms in Marblehead

This weekend, my instagram feed lit up with images of the cherry blossoms around the tidal basin in Washington, DC. Those trees were among my favorite aspects of living in DC during my residency and I still don't feel like spring has arrived until I can capture images of cherry blossoms. With our trees usually three weeks delayed from those further south, I turned to my archive and found this image of cherry blossoms in perfect bloom from a late April morning at the Harris Street cemetery. It won't be too much longer before the cherry blossoms in Marblehead bloom [...]

Empty Harbor 5 – Working Boats

Today's image completes the 'empty harbor' series as shot on Sunday, March 31st. In truth, Marblehead Harbor is never actually empty as the working boats take up position near the causeway. After shooting along Foster Street, I returned to the causeway and hopped out to capture the working boats. I walked to this point at which the five boats had a natural opening that I could use to frame Abbot hall.

Empty Harbor 4 – The Corinthian and Marblehead Light

From my spot along Foster Street, I captured scenes of the empty harbor before me but also turned back toward the Corinthian Yacht Club and found this view of interest. With the seemingly endless expanse of space to the left of the CYC, it appears as thought the empty moorings go on forever. The addition of Marblehead Light positioned behind the Corinthian and the light reflecting off the nearest mooring added to the final image.

Empty Harbor 3 – Panorama

On Sunday, I headed out to capture scenes of Marblehead's empty harbor but, with my longest lens on, found I couldn't quite fit the entirety of the scene before me in one shot. I quickly decided to flip the camera and capture this 12-shot panorama that takes in the full length from Abbot Hall and the BYC to the State Street Landing. Without a single boat in the water, the numerous moorings created a nice visual to break up the water and I lucked out with the soft clouds overhead.

Empty Harbor 2 – First One In

Alright, so I guess Marblehead harbor isn't completely empty as I found this boat on a mooring in front of the Boston Yacht Club. It appears that, apart from the working boats, this may be the 'first one in' to harbor. Won't be long before this boat is joined by many others to take their spot on the moorings.  I wasn't able to spot the boat's name - if you know it, please add it in a comment below.

Empty Harbor 1 – Abbot and the BYC

Sunday began with warmer than expected temperatures and a picture perfect sky prompting me to head out before my son's lacrosse game to capture some scenes of an empty harbor.  I stood along Foster Street and captured several views of Marblehead harbor with moorings eagerly awaiting the arrival of boats of all shapes and sizes. When I finished going through my images, I realized I had five 'keepers' and decided to create this Empty Harbor series. Seemed like a good way to get everyone excited for warmer days.

Ocean Sunrise

On the morning that I set out to capture the full moon setting over Old North Church, I couldn't help but shoot the sun as it came up as well. It was a clear morning with very little haze in the air and the sun appeared as a perfect bright spot in this ocean sunrise.  The surround sky took on a deep orange-red hue and I had to stop myself from shooting at this point to make sure I didn't damage the sensor on my camera.  Luckily, a bird flew by to break up the sky just enough and add [...]

Marblehead Sunset

There's nothing quite like a Marblehead sunset when you catch peak colors in the sky reflecting in the water of Marblehead harbor with boats filling every mooring... This was the scene on a late September evening when I lucked out with an incredible light show from this spot a the end of Peabody lane. I shot for almost 45 minutes trying to explore every available composition under the rapidly changing and strengthening light. Won't be long now before boats start to fill the harbor and we get to enjoy some warm Marblehead sunsets once more.

Foggy Summer Sunset at Chandler Hovey Park

I was looking through my to-be-posted folder and stopped when I happened upon this shot of a foggy summer sunset at Chandler Hovey Park. With the clouds so high in the sky, I had switched to my wide angle lens and composed this image from near the parking lot. The effect of the distance and wide angle was to make Marblehead Light appear diminutive with so much empty space around it. I think it helped accentuate the feel of a foggy summer evening in Marblehead - can't wait for more of those...

Moon over Fort Sewall

One more shot of the full moon that rose on the first day of Spring. I had decided to shoot the moonrise from Fort Sewall and was really hoping it would appear low on the horizon to frame it behind Childrens Island. Thick haze forced me to shoot a different composition which I was happy with and, after capturing the shot, I decided to head back to my car. On the way down the hill, I kept looking back over my shoulder and stopped in front of Fort Beach when I spotted the moon positioned behind the great tree at [...]
