Snowy Sunset

With a surprise March storm dropping seven inches of snow on Marblehead on Sunday night, I held out hope for photographing the town blanketed in white after finishing up work on Monday. I spent Monday in the clinic while my kids enjoyed the first snow day of the season (enjoyed might be a stretch as the boy was in charge of clearing the heavy snow from our driveway). As soon as the last patient left, I got in my car to head home and grabbed my camera bag on the way to Foster Street. With sunset now happening at 5:30pm, [...]

On the Corner

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had rented a lens to try on our recent trip to the Turks and Caicos and had gone out on this morning to put the glass through its paces. After capturing the brilliant sunrise from State Street Landing, I retreated to this spot along Washington Street hoping to capture more good light looking down State Street. By the time I was set up on the corner, the sun had risen too high to be reflected by the morning clouds but I still enjoyed this view of historic downtown Marblehead. The lens did not [...]

Purple Harbor – Back from Hiatus

This year has gotten off to a slow start with only four photo outings to date. The lack of snow played a major role as winter scenes seem to lack a needed element without a bit of white coating. As I write this, we are due to have our largest snow storm of the season so the irony is definitely not lost on me.  Besides a New Years sunrise shoot and heading out for the Epiphany tree burning, I had only gone out one other time prior to this particular morning. As it happened, I had rented a lens for [...]

Sunset Skate – brief break from hiatus

This might be the longest stretch that I have gone without taking a photo of Marblehead in almost ten years. I had influenza for the first time in my life and finally appreciated just how awful that virus can be. We all receive the vaccine annually and, while it is nowhere near 100% effective, my wife and daughter did not get the flu so that was a small win.  It took longer than expected to recover from that illness and I had absolutely no interest in venturing out during the recent arctic blast so I was content with letting the [...]

Lunar Eclipse over Marblehead

A full blood moon lunar eclipse is set to take place tonight just past midnight (peak at 1/21/2019 12:16am EST). I'm hopeful that this front over us will disappear by then but it is also bringing along sub-arctic air as it passes. I looked back at the last time I captured a lunar eclipse over Marblehead - September 27, 2015. I had shared an image from this night with Abbot Hall in the frame but had also captured the view of a red moon surrounded by stars with a borrowed super telephoto lens. Thought I would share it this morning [...]

Smoke in the Harbor – Eastern Yacht Club

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out on an arctic morning near the end of December 2017 to capture sea smoke and was surprised to find it rising off the waters inside Marblehead Harbor. Usually the phenomenon is better seen in the open water near Chandler Hovey aided by backlighting of the morning sun. Here is the view of the Eastern Yacht Club from my spot along Front Street.

Smoke in the Harbor – Corinthian Yacht Club

One year ago on a truly arctic morning at the end of December, I made my way to Front Street and captured sea smoke inside Marblehead Harbor. Since moving to Marblehead in 2008, I've been fascinated by the phenomenon of sea smoke - literal steam coming off the ocean when an arctic air mass lies above the water.  The smoke has appeared as early as late December or as late as mid-February. On this particular morning, the combination of very cold air and relatively warm water allowed smoke to appear inside Marblehead Harbor. I had only seen this once before [...]

Snow Day at Fort Sewall

Shortly after moving to Marblehead, I captured my favorite image of Fort Sewall with I found the red arches and this tree perfectly coated in fresh snow. I entered that image in the Marblehead Festival of Arts in 2008 and realized too late I had misspelled the title as Fort Sewell. Too late to change it, the photo was rejected - it still hangs over my desk at home. I returned to Fort Sewall during each snow storm to try to recapture that scene with a better camera and without the snowbank that always bugged me but never found the [...]

The Pull of the Ocean

On New Years Day, I headed out to Devereux Beach for the first sunrise of the year and shared an image of the sun backlighting waves shortly after I came home. Before the sun came up, I busied myself capturing the waves coming to shore and then receding in response to the pull of the ocean. Once I figured out this composition, it was a matter of timing to get just the right wave and just the right moment where the motion of the water returning to the ocean could best exemplify that cyclic pull.

Iced In – Marblehead Harbor

Last winter was marked by nearly three weeks of sub-20F temperatures which led to a frozen Marblehead Harbor. The ice wasn't thick enough to support anyone's weight as it had been during a stretch of the 1970s but the view of ice from Riverhead Beach out past the State Street Landing was impressive. I found the drone to be the best tool to capture the extent of the frozen water and had flown on the morning of January 3rd, 2018 to this spot where two boats appeared to be iced in. The small patches of water helped accentuate the extent [...]
