Supermoon Rises over Marblehead Light

By |2016-11-06T12:04:25-05:00July 12th, 2014|Categories: moon|Tags: , , , , |

Since the 'true' supermoon over 2011, it seems that each year we have more and more appearances of the so-called supermoon.  The term originally was meant for the full moon which was at its closest proximity to the earth in nearly two decades and thus would appear 17% larger.  The supermoons now are labels added to the closest proximity of the moon to the Earth for a given year.  In 2014, we are due to have three such supermoons. With that being said, I am always up for capturing an image of a full moon over Marblehead (supermoon or not).  [...]

Glover’s Regiment Marching Under the Full Moon

By |2016-11-06T12:04:26-05:00July 11th, 2014|Categories: Traditions|Tags: , , , |

Every Summer, Glover's Regiment has an encampment at Fort Sewall with reenactments of battles between the Loyalists/Red Coats and the Regiment.  It so happened that this year's encampment would take place during the Full Buck Moon.  I had a few ideas in mind and so I headed out to Fort Sewall on Friday night with my family to watch a piece of Marblehead history and hoped for good conditions. The full moon rose on a beautiful warm Summer night and the timing of the rise in relation to sunset meant there were plenty of pinks and purples in the sky [...]

Amateur Fireworks over Marblehead Harbor

By |2014-07-06T20:51:05-04:00July 11th, 2014|Categories: Fireworks|Tags: , , , |

As I mentioned before, 2014 was an off year for the annual Marblehead Fireworks display.  The official show was cancelled due to hurricane Arthur but I had set out for the causeway in order to capture the annual harbor illumination.  In years past, I had noticed the amateur fireworks launched from both sides of Marblehead harbor but saw those as a small taste of the real show to come.  This year, it was all we had but that made it all the more special. I spotted fireworks exploding in the space to the right of Abbot Hall and decided to [...]

From the Rooftops – Corinthian Yacht Club and Marblehead Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:04:26-05:00July 10th, 2014|Categories: Rooftop|Tags: , , , , , |

Back to the top of Marblehead Light from July 2nd for this From the Rooftops Thursday image.  I had previously shared an image including the shadows cast by Marblehead Light but, before focusing on that composition, I had been overwhelmed by the expansive view of Marblehead Harbor. The only tricky part was deciding whether to incorporate Abbot Hall with its scaffolding and red drape.  For this image, I decided to focus on Marblehead Neck and the Corinthian Yacht Club with the beautiful view of a full Marblehead Harbor.  I was fortunate to have some clouds to work with and I [...]

A Volley of Marblehead Fireworks from Riverhead Beach

By |2016-11-06T12:04:26-05:00July 9th, 2014|Categories: Fireworks|Tags: , , |

I mentioned on Saturday night's post (CLICK HERE TO SEE) that I had gone out to the causeway in order to capture the harbor illumination (shared on Monday - CLICK HERE TO SEE) but managed to also see an unofficial display of Marblehead fireworks.  That earlier image was a vertical meant to capture the entire arc of the flare.  Just before that rocket, I had captured this horizontal one that also managed to include two other flares exploding around Marblehead Harbor.  While the top of the arc is missing due to how close I was standing to the firework, I [...]

Marblehead Fireworks at Sunset

By |2016-11-06T12:04:26-05:00July 8th, 2014|Categories: Fireworks|Tags: , , , |

Another image from the impromptu Marblehead fireworks show as seen from the causeway.  I had been capturing images of the sunset reflecting off clouds over Marblehead Harbor when a few rockets exploded in the space between Abbot Hall (with its scaffolded tower) and the American flag hanging from the crane.  I quickly zoomed in and recomposed hoping for another volley of fireworks when I caught this one. Though subtle, I loved the single firework exploding in this composition with the colors of sunset serving as a beautiful background.

Marblehead’s Annual Harbor Illumination

By |2016-11-06T12:04:26-05:00July 7th, 2014|Categories: Fireworks|Tags: , , , |

Despite the wrench thrown at Marblehead by way of Hurricane Arthur, this was an incredible weekend filled with activities.  Though the annual fireworks display was postponed due to rain and then cancelled due to rough seas, I had decided to make my way to the causeway in order to capture the more unique tradition of the harbor illumination. I had captured the harbor illumination in year's past but always changed my focus as soon as the fireworks show began.  This year, I could concentrate my time and compositions on the red flares circling Marblehead Harbor and forming a beautiful ring [...]

Marblehead Fireworks from Riverhead Beach

By |2014-07-06T22:58:00-04:00July 5th, 2014|Categories: Fireworks|Tags: , , |

The 2014 edition of the Marblehead Fireworks ran into a major obstacle as a hurricane formed and arrived on Friday, July 4.  With a rain date of Saturday, July 5th, it seemed the show would go on.  Unfortunately, the hurricane left rough seas in its wake and the barge operator called off the show owing to dangerous conditions in transporting the fireworks. As disappointed as I was not to be able to capture the fireworks this year (I had a good spot planned out), I decided to head out and focus my efforts on the unique Marblehead tradition of the [...]

Casting Shadows at Marblehead Light

By |2016-11-06T12:04:26-05:00July 3rd, 2014|Categories: Rooftop|Tags: , , , , |

From the Rooftops Thursday is back with a vengeance after yesterday's morning climb to the top of Marblehead Light! For the past four years, I have been trying to find a way to the top of our lighthouse but the timing never seemed to work out.  Twice a year, the Rotary Club and volunteers string red, white and blue lights from the top of the lighthouse and I had hoped to join them but work kept getting in the way.  And so, when I received a text message from Jack at All Marblehead to set up a time for hanging [...]

Summer in Marblehead – 3 – Purple Light from Parker Lane

By |2016-11-06T12:04:26-05:00July 2nd, 2014|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , , |

Another image from Saturday's spectacular sunset over Marblehead harbor.  I had started off shooting at the Pleon Yacht Club but moved to Parker Land after the sun dipped below the horizon. On Monday, I shared the incredible pinks that filled the sky shortly afterwards. It wasn't long before the pinks gave way to the purple colors you see here.  I decided to keep the skyline as silhouette to minimize the scaffolding around Abbot Hall tower.  Between the amazing sunsets and warm days, there really is nothing quite like Summer in Marblehead.
