State Street After the Blizzard

Hope you aren't tiring of images of snow because I have a lot more to post.  This one comes from the evening that the Blizzard of 2013 ended.  The driving ban had been lifted at 4 and I made my way to Washington Street and then State Street to try to capture the aftermath.  Though I have photographed State Street a number of times, I have never found a good composition for these two houses that stand near Front Street and the harbor beyond.  On this day, as I turned up Front Street and looked up State, the composition practically [...]

In a Fog on Washington Street

Best of Show - Marblehead Festival of Arts 2013 As a photographer I've come to really love "bad" weather. It was for this reason that I woke up without an alarm on three successive mornings during the recent arctic blast and why a smile crept on my face as the warmup and light rain after blizzard combined to make for some dense fog on Monday night.  As soon as I got home from work, a meeting at a local hospital and reading a book with my son, I headed out in hopes of capturing the wonderful mood that fog adds [...]

Long Exposure – A Bench in Memory of

On Wednesday January 30th, a strong wind and some great clouds developed in the afternoon and I decided to head out to Chandler Hovey park for some long exposure images.  I started off trying to capture the setting sun but the combination of long exposure and wind gusts wasn't working so well.  I took shelter behind one of the rocks near the edge of the harbor and saw this scene before me. I decided to use the bench as a foreground element and allow the exposure time of 129 seconds to blur the water and add some movement to the [...]

Blowing Snow and the Boston Skyline

What an incredible weekend!  The Blizzard of 2013 rolled through and dumped snow continuously from Friday afternoon through most of Saturday.  I had decided to try my hand at a timelapse and set up my camera looking out our window at the street.  Using an intervalometer set to shoot at 5 minute intervals, I ended up with 228 images that combined to a 10 second synopsis of the storm.  I posted the result on my Facebook page and on this site over the weekend and the response was incredible.  I've never had anything truly 'go viral' before but this video [...]

Sunset After the Blizzard

By |2016-11-06T12:06:02-05:00February 9th, 2013|Categories: Snow|Tags: , , |

If there's one thing you can count on with a good storm, it's that a solid sunset/sunrise will usually follow.  So as the Blizzard of 2013 (Nemo to some) finished dumping 20+ inches of snow and as the driving ban finally expired at 4pm, I took off to shoot the after effects.  I started off in Old Town and spent some time up and down Washington Street and walking out to Crocker Park, back through State Street...  It was quite a trek.  As I made my way back from State Street, I noted the light starting to take shape.  I [...]

Blizzard of 2013

By |2016-11-06T12:06:02-05:00February 9th, 2013|Categories: Video|Tags: , |

With the blizzard predicted to dump 2 feet of snow, I thought it might be cool to watch the snow fall as a time lapse.  I set up my camera on a tripod against a window looking out at the street at noon on Friday.  Using an intervalometer, I had the camera take a photo every 5 minutes and stopped it at 7am.  After some quick edits, I combined the 228 images into this 10 second time lapse.  Enjoy! Now to dig out so I can get some photos around town...

Fort Sewall – 1742

By |2016-11-06T12:06:02-05:00February 8th, 2013|Categories: Snow|Tags: , , |

A hint of things to come?  As we get ready for what may be 1-2 feet of snowfall, I decided to bring out this image taken in mid-January after a much quieter snow storm.  This particular one only dumped a few inches but the timing was perfect and the snow was wet enough to stick to branches and serve as a great contrast. I have shared a few images from this particular day but have been saving this one in the archive.  I took this image as I was leaving Fort Sewall and noted that I had never photographed the [...]

A Puffin? In Marblehead?!

By |2016-11-06T12:06:03-05:00February 7th, 2013|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , |

On Tuesday, a fan of my site asked if I ever photographed wildlife - especially birds.  I admitted that I had never been interested in shooting birds - it is an incredibly challenging (and expensive) branch of photography that requires inordinate patience.  Then he mentioned that he had seen a puffin in Little Harbor and I quickly changed my tune.  A puffin?  In Marblehead?!?!  This was too good to be true I thought.  I was told that he seemed to appear with some regularity at mid-tide.  The fan had been doubtful as well but noted that he definitely moved as [...]

Dawn’s Light and Tinkers Island from a House on Ocean Avenue

By |2016-11-06T12:06:03-05:00February 6th, 2013|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , , |

On Monday, I shared an image from Castle Rock with the sun's rays shining on ice as a result of the arctic weather.  I promised a backstory for that shot so here goes... A few weeks ago, I received a request to purchase a matted print of my Walk in the Fog image (you can see it in the Best of 2011 gallery by using the menu above).  At the time, I was also asked about being commissioned for a special photo shoot.  When I delivered the print at the house on Ocean Avenue, I surreptitiously scouted the location knowing that I [...]

Long Exposure – From the Top of Fountain Park

By |2016-11-06T12:06:03-05:00February 5th, 2013|Categories: Long Exposure|Tags: , , , , , |

On Sunday, January 20th, after attending my son's swim meet at the JCC, I noted the clouds starting to form as we neared sunset.  I had a location in mind for a long exposure shot for some time and decided to head there in hopes that the light would work.  As I got to Fountain Park, the clouds were just starting to reach the lighthouse.  The light was starting to fade and I got to work setting up my camera with the 10-stop filter to help limit available light and extend the time the shutter could be opened. It turns [...]
