First Light on an Icy Castle Rock

By |2016-11-06T12:06:03-05:00February 4th, 2013|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , , , |

Back to some recent images taken before the January thaw.  On this particular morning, I again headed out in hopes of capturing some sea smoke.  It turned out that my search was in vain but I did not come away empty handed.  In fact, I witness (and captured) and incredible early dawn image that I'll share in the next few days (you'll understand why later) and then headed here to Castle Rock.  I was surprised to see the tide pools had turned to ice and I quickly scampered down to the rocks as the sun began to rise.  By positioning [...]

Experimental Friday – The Devereux Beach Playground

By |2016-11-06T12:06:03-05:00February 1st, 2013|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , |

I recently borrowed a friend's tilt-shift lens for a planned architectural shoot.  On the first day that I had the lens, some fog rolled in and I decided to try the lens out and see what it could accomplish.  The lens is used mainly to make sure lines line up straight but can be used in a more creative fashion to adjust the depth of field on an image and make objects appear smaller and toy-like.  With the fog, I decided this lens would allow me to capture the elements of the Devereux beach playground without the clutter of other [...]

From the Rooftops – From the Fire Escape of Old Town House

By |2016-11-06T12:06:03-05:00January 31st, 2013|Categories: Rooftop|Tags: , |

In July 2012, I took my son to visit the GAR museum on the second floor of the Old Town House.  It was a particularly warm day and the door leading out to the fire escape was propped open to let in whatever breeze might come.  I took a quick peak out there and was thrilled with the view.  The Festival of Art decorations still draped the windows and I took this image to capture the feel of a warm Summer day in Old Town.

Worm Moon Rises Over Marblehead Neck

By |2016-11-06T12:06:03-05:00January 30th, 2013|Categories: moon|Tags: , , |

On the same night that I captured Monday's image of the frozen harbor at sunset, I also managed this image of the full Worm moon rising over Marblehead Neck.  The original plan was to shoot this moon as it rose over the lighthouse.  I arrived at the location I had scouted with too much time to spare so I drove across the causeway and photographed the ice along the harbor as the sun set.  Given the clouds on the mainland side, I had little hope for the moon rise.  As I packed up and drove back across the causeway however, [...]

Long Exposure – Rocks in a Milky Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:06:03-05:00January 29th, 2013|Categories: Long Exposure|Tags: , , , , |

Tuesday means another Long Exposure image.  This one comes from last Wednesday morning on an ill-fated attempt to shoot sea smoke.  Despite the 10 F temps, the harbor was eerily clear when I arrived at dawn to photograph this scene.  Rather than giving up, I decided to wait til sunrise and see what the clouds and light might offer.  As it turns out, the image came out great and I ended up sharing it last week. Before the sun rose, however, there was just enough light to play with some long exposures.  This was still the blue hour and I [...]

Frozen Marblehead Harbor under Sunset’s Light

By |2016-11-06T12:06:03-05:00January 28th, 2013|Categories: Snow|Tags: , , |

Throughout this past week, I have been going out at sunrise in search of sea smoke.  I ended up with only a few shots that captured the wispy fog coming off the relatively warm water.  On each trip out, however, I would note that parts of the Marblehead harbor had started to freeze and reminded myself to set out and capture this phenomenon in better light. On Saturday, I headed out with plans to shoot the full worm moon rise over the harbor and found myself set up 40 minutes early.  As the clouds began to form overhead, I started [...]

Ram Island Surrounded by Sea Smoke

By |2016-11-06T12:06:04-05:00January 25th, 2013|Categories: Island|Tags: , , , |

On Wednesday morning, I woke up early and hoped to capture some sea smoke.  Unfortunately, it wasn't quite cold enough and I had to settle for a pretty awesome sunrise.  On Thursday, I figured there was no hope of shooting anything.  I had to drop off my son at school at 7:55 and head to work in Danvers afterwards.  When my wife texted me from the JCC to tell me there was sea smoke on the water, however, plans changed.  I still dropped off my son but then ran to the car and drove out to Bass Rock Lane.  I [...]

Cold Dawn over Marblehead Neck

By |2016-11-06T12:06:05-05:00January 24th, 2013|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , , , |

Yesterday, January 23rd, was slated to be our first near-zero degree day in a while.  With the recent moderate weather and ocean temps in the 40's, I figured I had a good shot at capturing some sea smoke.  With that in mind, I woke up early on Wednesday and drove to a few spots.  Unfortunately, Redd's Pond and Little Harbor didn't have anything in the way of smoke.  I crossed my fingers and made my way to Front Street hoping for better luck.  For whatever reason, the water was smooth and smoke-free.  I sat there in the car trying to [...]

Summer Sunset over Goldthwait Reservation

By |2016-11-06T12:06:05-05:00January 23rd, 2013|Categories: Sunset|Tags: , |

How about a warm image on this bitterly cold day?  One of the nice things about having an archive of images is being able to grab one from Summer to share on a cold Winter day.  This image of Goldthwait Reservation was taken at sunset in early June 2011.  I had walked out to this point on a number of occasions but either found the grass not green or the water level not high enough for a decent reflection.  On this day, it seemed all the elements came together (not to mention hundreds of mosquitos who feasted on me during [...]

Long Exposure – The Tree and the Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:06:05-05:00January 22nd, 2013|Categories: Long Exposure|Tags: , , , |

This image is a year old and has been hanging in my office for just about that long but I just realized that I have never shared it here.  In early January 2012 (the same day as my color image of this scene from the end of Doak's Lane), I made this image that was intended as a square crop.  The color photo from sunset remains one of my favorites but this black and white is a close second.  I love the feel of black and white for these long exposure images (180 seconds in this case).  The processing was [...]
