Playing with Light

Moonrises tend to be fun outings as there is a very clear goal for the image and, with modern tools, I can reliably predict the path of the moon's rise and ascent. Despite all of that being known, when the moon actually rises, it always brings with it some element of surprise. Usually, by the time it has reached a high enough point in the sky, the dynamic range (the difference between the brightness of the moon and the darkness of the rest of the scene) is too large or the moon too high for a strong composition. At that [...]

About Last Night

By |2021-08-03T22:12:49-04:00August 4th, 2021|Categories: Sunset|Tags: , , |

So last night had all the makings of a great sunset which was even more remarkable due to the paucity of nice sunset light in the past month. And yet, despite the weather predictions and staring up at the sky on my evening walk with the dog, I just couldn't make it out. Thankfully, a quick trip to the 'to be posted' folder reminded me of an equally nice sunset that took place on July 19, 2019 off the Village Street pier. This is the last 'keeper' from that outing and the sixth image I captured that night. Each one [...]

Heading Home in a Townie

One of my all time favorite outings happened on July 5, 2016 and I still have not finished sharing my 'keepers' from that night. We had incredible fog roll in as the sun set which created an almost cinematic appearance to the harbor. I shot from Chandler Hovey Park in every direction and have shared several favorite images already. Here a lone town class boat heads back into the harbor with the sail catching the light of the setting sun and the fog breaking around the edge of land in the background.

Best Harbor in America

By |2021-08-01T21:17:30-04:00August 2nd, 2021|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , |

As I was looking for images to post this week, I stopped at this shot and thought 'this must be the best harbor in America'. And then I promptly Googled to see if that was a real contest. Turns out it is as of 2019 when US Harbors started a contest and, to my dismay, Marblehead wasn't even listed. The winner of the Northeast section was Padanaram, South Darmouth. Interestingly, only 2,500 people voted for the 2021 version of the contest so I figured when the time comes next year (voting should start in late March/early April 2022), we should [...]

Still Chasing Those Rainbows

By |2021-07-25T20:14:21-04:00July 29th, 2021|Categories: Storm|Tags: , , |

Since I wasn't able to capture a rainbow on my most recent outing, here is one from May 12th that I haven't had the chance to share yet. Between the rainbow and interesting cloud formation, I had ample opportunities to come up with different compositions from my spot at the end of Commercial Street.  Here I brought the camera down to the ground just inches above the water level to accentuate the reflections in the still water and only later noticed the flared end of the rainbow where it met the causeway.

Clouds and Surf at Devereux

By |2021-07-25T20:10:48-04:00July 28th, 2021|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , |

This is a more recent image captured from an outing on July 21 when I had gone out hoping to capture lighting or rainbows from a storm passing to the south but came away with a picturesque view of Devereux Beach with clouds and surf accentuating the fading light of the sun.

Breaking through the Clouds

It's almost funny looking back at this image captured on the fourth of July and realizing we have spent much of the second wettest month on record in similar conditions. On that day, I had gone out just after noon and ended up capturing what I thought was an interesting low bank of clouds from the Pleon.  Abbot Hall seems to be breaking through the clouds with a nearly full harbor laid out in front.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

By |2021-07-26T20:17:54-04:00July 26th, 2021|Categories: Sunset|Tags: , |

I was at work today and saw a patient who commented on the awful smell of smoke outside. I hadn't had a chance to step outside until after 5 and, when I did, I realized she was right - the smoke from fires 2,500 miles away on the west coast had reached us along with the acrid smell. I thought of that as I was walking the dog and then stopped to talk to a neighbor but kept glancing west at the setting sun which was a bright red ball in the sky. As soon as I got home, I [...]

Remembering the Sunrise

By |2021-07-25T20:04:13-04:00July 26th, 2021|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , |

It's been over three months since I last woke up in the pre-dawn hours to chase a sunrise. For the most part, the last month has offered little in the way of good light to make up for any lost sleep. However, I noticed that I missed a nice sunrise this past weekend which made me want to look back and see just how long it had been since I had last shot the sun rising up from the horizon. This outing on April 15 turned out to be one of my more memorable sunrise shoots. I came away with [...]

Ocean Glow

By |2021-07-21T21:52:15-04:00July 22nd, 2021|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , |

I had been watching the sky last night at around 7pm and couldn't decide if we might have a nice sunset and ended up opting to stay in. But then I heard a clap of thunder and checked the radar to find a bright red spot passing just south of Marblehead and jumped in the car.  I drove to Devereux Beach and arrived to find the last light of a rainbow fading. Unfortunately, no lightning appeared as I had hoped. Instead, I stayed until sunset and shot along the beach. I worked on three images when I returned home and [...]
