Blue Sky over Marblehead Harbor

On a hot Labor Day, I parked at Riverhead Beach and walked the length of the causeway trying to find the perfect spot to capture the deep blue sky over Marblehead Harbor.  At around the mid-point, I found that I could line up Abbot Hall on the left, the edge of Marblehead Light on the right and seemingly endless masts of boats filling the space in between. With a big blue sky punctuated by white clouds overhead, I had the makings of a picture perfect summer day in Marblehead.

Stacked up for Sunset

On a mid-June evening, I headed to Harvard Street while chasing this sunset over Marblehead Harbor. I arrived in time to set up and decide on this composition that encompassed Abbot Hall to Grace Community Church with boats stacked up for sunset under the pink sky with golden light on the water. The focal length compressed and accentuated the feel of boats packed tightly in the harbor and captured the feel of a mid-summer evening in Marblehead.

Red Moon Rising

The full Sturgeon moon rose tonight over Chandler Hovey Park and I had very nearly given up on trying to capture it.  It was 7:30pm, we had just finished dinner, and I very nearly had forgotten about the moonrise. I quickly checked the weather report and saw that cloud cover was minimal. I then spent a few minutes trying to get motivated to shoot the moonrise and left the house with only the camera and tripod in hand. I arrived on Front Street with five minutes to set up and was starting to worry when I hadn't spotted the moon [...]

Diving for Rainbows

I mentioned yesterday that I have not shot many (if any) storms this summer and ended up revisiting images taken back in August of 2015 to find an unshared shot of lightning. While in that folder, I found this image of a rainbow forming over Marblehead Harbor. I couldn't remember the specifics of this outing on August 4th, 2015 so I jumped into the folder where I keep my images and discovered I had taken 20 images between 3pm and 8:20pm on this day ranging from dark clouds over Marblehead Light to lightning near Abbot to rainbows over the harbor [...]

Making Waves at Sunrise

I don't make it up early enough to catch most sunrises in the summer but when I do and when conditions turn out this amazing, I try to make the most of it. Today's image comes from the sunrise that wouldn't end on June 30th. I've shared a number of images from that morning including 'Sunrise Like Gold' that I just finalized as the June image for my 2019 Marblehead Calendar (going to press this week). After shooting several frames, a passing boat's wake created subtle waves that helped accentuate the reflections of light in Marblehead Harbor.

Just Another Marblehead Sunset

What does it say about this town when I look at this image taking on the evening of August 1st and the first thing that pops in my head is 'just another Marblehead sunset'? This image was captured a few minutes before two others that I shared from this night including 'the kids are alright'.  I've often shot sunsets with a slight change in position of Abbot Hall from the left to right third of the frame and noted that the subtle shift can create a wildly different composition. We've had a paucity of nice sunsets with the recent rains [...]

Full Harbor for the Fourth of July

Another funny story (to borrow the intro from last week's image of kids on the boat) - my wife and I went out for dinner a few nights ago and, while eating, caught the words 'Wednesdays in Marblehead' coming from the table next to us. The group said some incredibly flattering things and my wife and I tried to figure out if/when to introduce ourselves but between the food and changes in conversation, the timing didn't seem right. I did catch one comment that I have been mulling over since then - there were mixed feelings on the drone/aerial images. [...]

Magical Illumination

With temperatures due to pass 90 today and tomorrow, I was in the mood to look back at images from an equally warm Fourth of July this year. I have only shared one image of the harbor illumination that took place that night and thought this image would be a nice way to start the week. The sight of red flares lighting up the harbor remains my favorite part of the July 4th festivities in Marblehead. This year, I was able to capture the magical illumination on both sides of the harbor from my spot along the causeway and with [...]

Nothing Better than a Marblehead Sunset

For the past few days, I have been sharing images from our long weekend on Nantucket. While there I felt energized with new places to visit and came back feeling unsure if I would be able to find that same drive back home after 10 years of photographing this town. Well, it took less than 48 hours before Marblehead answered with a combination of picture perfect clouds, a harbor filled with boats, Abbot standing tall in the distance and a sailboat approaching its mooring.  There really is nothing better than a Marblehead sunset!

Never-ending Sunrise

I thought I would take a break from the drone shots and revise the never-ending sunrise that took place at the end of June. This is the third image captured from Hammond park on the morning of June 30th and I'm amazed when I look back at how different each shot is with a slight change in focal length and a drastic change in cloud cover and color. The sunrise on this morning lasted about 15 minutes which is really an incredibly long period from that first light of dawn painting the clouds overhead to the first peak of the [...]
