Marblehead Junior Race Week Begins

I was fortunate to have a day off yesterday just as Marblehead Junior Race Week began and so I headed to Chandler Hovey Park a little after 2pm to see what images I might capture of the Optis racing just outside the harbor. I started off shooting with my real camera and longest zoom but wasn't happy with the compositions so I switched over to the drone. I circled the boats nearest the harbor until I found this composition of the small one-kid boats racing with Marblehead Light standing tall in the distance. Racing continues Tuesday and Wednesday so head out [...]

Fog on the Harbor

Last Monday evening, fog developed in Marblehead ahead of a warm front. I had an idea in mind for the drone that would only work with patchy fog concentrated around the harbor. I had checked out conditions by flying my drone straight up over my house and noticed that conditions seemed to be perfect and promptly headed out to Devereux Beach. I arrived to find patchy fog overhead and flew my drone up above the fog which took on the appearance of cloud cover. I explored different compositions with the unique effect of fog on the harbor creating the illusion [...]

Tied Up for the Fourth

On the Fourth of July, I set about shooting aerial images of various beaches in Marblehead as the hot, humid weather seemed to bring out the largest crowds I had witnessed in those spots. I had actually started my day scouting out shots from the ground and hit upon this scene in Little Harbor just after noon. I have seen Little Harbor fill with boats in the summer but never to this extent. I shot several frames including varying compositions but favored this one with the American flag flying from atop a crane while people walked between boats in the [...]

Corker of a Sunset over Fort Beach

This corker of a sunset took shape over Fort Beach twenty minutes after yesterday's image and, the kicker is, that it wasn't even the best light to come out of this evening's outing. I had already shared the incredible pink-purple light that followed this golden glow by five minutes. However, this color was too good not to share as well. At this point in the evening, I was set up on Fort Sewall Lane with a tripod and had watched as kids came and went from the waters below. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the cloud formations seemed [...]

Splashing Water at Fort Beach

On July 3rd, I chased a promising cloud formation to Fort Beach and started to shoot it from atop Fort Sewall. As the cloud moved and picked up more light from the setting sun, I made my way down Fort Sewall Lane and stopped at this overlook for a bit. I watched as kids headed into the shallow water on a hot summer evening and captured a few frames of them splashing water at each other. The sunset created picture perfect light overhead that reflected nicely in the waters of Fort Beach. I was pretty happy with this shot until [...]

Blue Sky and the Painted Sunrise

I've only shared one image from this sunrise that took place on June 30th but the sky went through so many shades of color that I was left with many more in my 'to be published' folder. This was one of the first shots I took from the float at the end of Commercial Street. I started to shoot as the first light of dawn created what looked like a painted sunrise that reflected perfectly in the still waters of Marblehead Harbor. I decided to compose the image to include a boat docked nearby and only later saw the name [...]

Marblehead Fireworks from the Causeway

I had grand plans for this year's Marblehead fireworks show and spent a week planning and prepping for the show. I had received a waiver from the FAA for flying at night and planned to try to shoot the show from the air with a backup plan to have my real camera on the ground.  Good thing I had a backup plan... So to prep for using the drone, I visited the causeway at night to practice flying and focusing as well as figure out settings. I also practiced launching and catching the drone by hand to make I could [...]

Sunset Sky over Fort Beach

Thank goodness for good friends and last minute plans or else I would have missed the incredible sunset sky over Fort Beach that erupted last night... I had come home from work just before 6 and touched base with friends who invited me to join them at Crocker Park to take in the Festival of Arts music while eating dinner. My wife and kids are off in Chicago so I was thankful for the invite and a chance to relax outside with good company - Thanks Mabrys!!! I picked up some Howling Wolf and then headed to Crocker where I [...]

Lake Havasu, Marblehead

This weekend was a scorcher and just about the only place to get any relief from the heat was on the water. With that in mind, I decided to fly my drone over a few spots in town including Brown's Island. In year's past, I had noted how the harbor would fill with boats at high tide (many tied together) and quickly came to resemble a (milder) version of Lake Havasu. With the drone flying high above, I was able to capture the scene of various boats anchored or tied together off Brown's Island with some sunbathers on the small [...]

A Sunrise Like Gold

Friday night, I set the alarm for 4:30am after checking a few sources and realizing I had a 50-50 chance of a solid sunrise. I woke with the alarm and really, really did not want to get out of bed. When I finally did, I cursed ridiculousness of these early Summer sunrises and dutifully got in the car. As I drove, I saw the first hint of light overhead and quickly decided on Hammond Park as my destination. I arrived just as the sky began to explode in shades of pink and purple and headed down to the float to [...]
