Sunset on the Neck

Last week I sat for the FAA part 107 certification examination and became a certified pilot of small unmanned aircraft systems (aka drones).  In celebration, I wanted to share some images that I have been working on with the Phantom 4 Pro while exploring the many new compositions available to me with a third degree of movement above Marblehead. This image of sunset on the Neck was taken on Friday, March 3rd.  I had returned home from work and watched the clouds along the way wondering if they might pick up the light of the setting sun.  I grabbed the [...]

Waves Lapping at the Causeway

On Monday night, I headed out to Devereux beach in the hopes of exploring the causeway and beach with my new Phantom 4 Pro.  As I flew across the causeway, I positioned the camera directly down and was mesmerized by the view of green-blue water gently lapping against the sand and rocks abutting the causeway. I stopped in my tracks, rotated the drone and composed this image.  As I did so, I was recording and caught a bicyclist riding across the top of the frame.  That video is below. As soon as he passed, I captured this image of [...]

Fishing off the Causeway

I think Summer officially peaked for me on Sunday, August 7th with this walk atop the causeway surrounded by scene after scene exemplifying the beauty of a Marblehead Summer.  Before capturing the closer view of a packed Devereux Beach, I happened upon a man standing more than waist deep in the Atlantic Ocean and fishing off the causeway. I watched him for a little while as I composed this image and waited for cars to pass by.  I didn't see him catch anything but he seemed quite content as the waves pushed and pulled at him.  I loved the proximity [...]

Capture the Fog

Yesterday's image of two Townies under the red light of a foggy sunset was one of the last images I captured on Tuesday night as fog rolled into Marblehead harbor.  This was one of the first. I had left my house as soon as I saw fog rolling in as I knew the timing offered a chance for spectacular light conditions around the harbor.  I drove across the causeway in thickening fog and parked as soon as I could on Marblehead Neck only to double back and set up for this shot. With flags hanging from the lamp posts and [...]

Pink Sky over Riverhead Beach

Last night, I headed out just before sunset on a bit of a hunch and with a particular destination in mind.  I had met someone recently who inquired about my shooting from her home of 24 years that they had recently sold.  After discussing a bit about the property, I promised I would do my best to capture an image with which to remember this house with a view of Marblehead Harbor. I ended up shooting a few scenes from the cupola of her home while we talked and kept my eye on a particular cloud that shifted just out of [...]

Leading Lines on the Causeway

Our final image of the week and a good lead off for the weekend is this one from the morning of May 6, 2012.  I had gone out on this morning to shoot the Marblehead Carnival in the early light and had hoped to capture the full moon setting as well.  The latter didn't work out with the cloud cover but I was able to capture some nice images of Devereux Beach in the blue hour. As the morning light broke through the clouds, I made my way up to the causeway and stopped here when I saw that the lamp [...]

Smoke Crashes Over the Causeway

My first stop on Sunday was Riverhead Beach which offered a great location for scouting out the morning's sea smoke.  While the temperatures of -10F meant that sea smoke would likely occur, the predicted winds of 20MPH made me nervous that any rising smoke would quickly disappear with the gusts of wind.  As soon as I pulled into the lot at Riverhead, those fears disappeared and the beauty of sea smoke rising from Marblehead harbor greeted me. I quickly got out of the car and felt the arctic temperatures for the first time.  I had dressed perfectly it turned out [...]

Causeway Sunset

New Years Day was a busy one with an outing at dawn to shoot the start of the new year and another at sunset to chase some clouds.  For the sunset shoot, I had my son in tow and noticed great light developing as we neared Marblehead and approached sunset.  I quickly ran into the house for my camera and out we went to chase the light. The first stop was Bass Rocks Lane (picture maybe next week) but after that I ended up on the causeway while he hung out at Devereux.  I shot towards Marblehead Neck but then turned [...]

Moonrise over the Causeway

The full moon is upon us again with the Beaver moon set to rise tonight around sunset.  This image comes from October and features the Hunter's moonrise over the causeway.  I had shared another image of this moonrise previously focusing on the causeway leading towards the large full moon.  After taking that image, I headed back towards the parking lot at Devereux Beach and captured this version with the causeway's concrete wall now serving as the leading line and allowing me to featured more of the Fall foliage on Marblehead Neck. Conditions are looking good for watching the full moonrise [...]

Hunter’s Moon over the Causeway

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I hadn't captured any images of Fall foliage in Marblehead this year.  As I wrote that post, I was also scouting the full Hunter's moon expected location and had an image in mind that I hoped to capture. I finished up my last note at work at 5:15pm and drove straight to Devereux Beach and the causeway.  I had packed my camera and tripod that morning in case I was able to make it out on time for the 5:30pm moonrise and 5:45pm sunset.  I arrived at the Devereux parking lot at a little [...]
