Historic Downtown from the Rooftops of Abbot Hall

Can you believe this image of historic downtown from atop Abbot Hall was taken in early December?  I can only imagine the view now with snow as far as the eye can see. I continue to feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to capture our town from this unique vantage point atop the scaffolding that encircled Abbot Hall during its much needed renovations. This view of historic downtown from atop Abbot Hall features the Jeremiah Lee Mansion, St. Michael's, Grace Community and Old North Church as well as a number of stores along Washington Street.

Smoke on the Water – Marblehead Harbor filled with Sea Smoke

In 2012, I was fortunate to witness and capture sea smoke on what was easily the coldest day of that year.  Since first seeing the incredible beauty of smoke rising off the ocean at dawn, I have sought to capture it again.  I went out a number of times in 2013 but the conditions were never right for sea smoke to develop.  In January 2014, I photographed backlit sea smoke as the sun rose behind Tinker's Island.  With all prior attempts, I had hoped to see sea smoke rising within Marblehead Harbor.  I'm not exactly sure what conditions favor the [...]

Marblehead Harborfront

After the rain departed on Saturday, October 11, I decided to head out in hopes of capturing a few lingering clouds and some scenes of foliage around town.  On an earlier venture, I had noticed that the Marblehead harborfront (not sure if that is an official name for the area depicted here) was showing signs of Fall colors.  I made my way across the causeway to the public way at Parker Lane to see if the colors had indeed 'popped' in the interim. While there were some hints of orange and yellow in the trees, I was more intrigued by [...]

From the Rooftops – The Three Steeples

I have shared two images from this newest location of my From the Rooftops series - St. Micheal's Church.  I was fortunate to be invited to the top of the scaffolding at sunset and even more so to have great light with which to capture the scenes before me. One of the first things I noticed was the view of Grace Community Church and I started to photograph its familiar structure only to then note that I could include Old North Church's steeple as well.  It was only after walking near the edge of the scaffolding that I found this [...]

300 Years Later – A New Steeple for St. Michael’s Church

On Thursday, August 28, a crowd gathered in the historic downtown section of Marblehead to watch as a new steeple was placed atop St. Michael's Church.  The Episcopal church was founded in 1714 and originally had a wooden steeple above the building but decay led to its removal in 1793.  I was disappointed that I would miss the steeple rising that took place on that Thursday but was thrilled when I heard from one of its officers who invited me up the scaffolding for a closer view of the steeple as well as the temporary 'rooftop' view. We met at [...]

Snow in Marblehead – The Three Icons

So far, November has been cold (bitterly so at times) but only a few flakes have hit the ground.  With twenty-five unpublished images of snow waiting to be shared, I thought I would take advantage of the seasonably cold weather to show some images of snow from years past. This image was taken on the morning of December 30, 2012.  Our first winter storm had gone through with expectations of 6 inches of snow to fall over the weekend.  We got a little less than that in Marblehead and the crews did a great job of clearing the streets.  I [...]

Gravestones and Cherry Blossoms at Harris Street Cemetery

Couldn't resist bringing out another image from my trip to the Harris Street Cemetery which I found in peak bloom at the end of April.  On this particular evening, I had gone to the cemetery in hopes of getting a shot of the almost full pink moon rising against the foreground of cherry blossoms. Before the moon could rise, I had to wait for the sun to set and, as it did, it lit up the cherry blossoms and surroundings in a great evening light.  I took a few shots around the cemetery but this one was a favorite.  I [...]

Long Exposure – Grace Community Church

On the same day that I would capture a long exposure image of Our Lady Star of the Sea, I managed to get this image of clouds streaking over Grace Community Church.  I had driven down Pleasant Street on countless mornings hoping to capture this church in the early morning light and without cars stopped in front.  I was thwarted on each attempt by parents dropping off kids at the daycare.   I therefore had very little hope of shooting the full facade of this church at noon on this very windy day but, lo and behold, there it stood [...]

From the Rooftops – Two Churches

Rooftop Thursday brings this view of St Michael's Episcopal Church and Grace Community Church gracing the skyline of Old Town.  This was taken from the rooftop deck of an apartment on Washington Street that offered tremendous views up and down that great street as well as of these two houses of worship.

From the Rooftops – Grace Community Church

This view From the Rooftops comes from the rental property on Washington Street.  As I waited for the sun to get into the proper position for this image, I looked around and found this view of Grace Community Church towering over nearby houses.  The houses appear to be stacked on top of each other and the angles of their roofs offer an amazing array of lines leading the eye around the scene. If you have or know of any rooftop decks in Marblehead that I can shoot from, please use the contact form in the About Me page.  Thanks!
