Sunrise through the Cloudbank

The temperatures on Saturday, October 17 threatened to dip below freezing overnight and I thought there might be a chance of seeing seasmoke in the harbor.  I had to be in Portsmouth for a conference at 8:15am but figured I would have just enough time to capture the sunrise from Front Street. As I drove, the temperature on my car's thermometer displayed a cold 32F on this mid-October day and I remained with high hopes until I reached Front Street.  There was no seasmoke to see though the cold air above warm water did combine to form a nice cloud [...]

Coming Home to Marblehead

In mid-July of 2013, a friend took me out on his boat a few hours before sunset for a cruise around Marblehead.  We had perfect conditions and light which resulted in some of my favorite images of Marblehead from the water. At one point, we had gone out to Children's Island and, on our return, I spotted the Hannah Glover ferrying campers back home to Marblehead after a day spent on the island.  I captured this image with the Hannah Glover and Marblehead Light bookending Marblehead Neck under soft clouds and light. It's no wonder that Marblehead is home to [...]

Sunstar at Marblehead Light

So the theme for the week seems to be ultra wide shots taken with the new Canon 11-24mm lens I received on loan for the week.  Right after capturing the facade of the new Glover School, I headed out to Chandler Hovey Park with a few compositions in mind. I had heard that the Canon 11-24mm was capable of producing beautiful sunstars with 18-points and so I found this spot from which I could include all of Marblehead Light in the frame.  I positioned the camera just on the edge of the shadow so that the sun abutted the lighthouse.  This [...]

Light at the End of the Rainbow

This is the fifth image shared from an outing on Tuesday, August 4th.  I've already shared images of lightning and a sunset shot of boats in Marblehead harbor and have another image coming up on Thursday as well.  It's no wonder that the site grew quickly from a weekly post to daily ones... On this day, storms kept passing through Marblehead including one at 4:30pm.  With the intensity of rain and clearing skies behind it, I thought there might be a chance for a rainbow (though the sun wasn't quite low enough in the sky yet).  I quickly got in [...]

Watching the Moon Rise

I've already shared one image of the blue moon rising on July 31st but this one might be my favorite from that night.  I explained previously that my camera and all lenses were at Canon for their biyearly checkup and cleaning.  In their place, I was fortunate to borrow a camera and zoom lens from a friend.  The zoom she lent me allowed twice the magnification of my longest lens and the camera added an extra 1.6 time reach to do its smaller sensor.  The end result was an effective 640mm of zoom (vs the 200mm I usually use). When [...]

Once in a Blue Moon

On July 23rd, I decided to go on hiatus.  This was largely driven by my feeling that I was going out to shoot the same scenes driven in part by the positive response I was getting on social media.  I felt that I was no longer shooting for myself and started feeling less excited about going out and less satisfied with the images I was capturing. In the past week, I have continued to go out to shoot but found the excitement has come roaring back (to the detriment of my family whom I forced to join me on one [...]

Marblehead Fireworks – The Grand Finale

There's a danger in looking at images and sharing them too quickly after an event.  On the Fourth of July, I raced home from Marblehead Neck on my bicycle passing bumper to bumper traffic on the causeway.  As soon as I walked in the door, I plugged my camera's memory card in and hoped that some of the Marblehead fireworks images came out as nice as I remembered them. I scanned the images quickly and selected three different views of the evening's great show.  It was only this weekend, when I had time to carefully review the images from the [...]

Harbor Illumination on the Fourth of July

This year's Fourth of July celebration was a whirlwind event during which I participated in my first Artisans Marketplace and learned that I had won Peoples Choice Award in the Festival of Arts Photography exhibit.  With both those events having just taken place, I rode my bicycle onto Marblehead Neck in the hopes of capturing images of the annual harbor illumination as well as the Marblehead fireworks display.  I've shared a few images from this night already but finally had the chance to review other images captured that evening and found a few more I would like to share with [...]

The Full Moon over Marblehead Neck

One last image (for now) of the incredible light that took shape over Marblehead on July 1st.  After capturing the red glow of houses on the Neck and then racing up to the top of Crocker Park for an image of Abbot Hall and the purple light of the coming storm, I returned to the water's edge once more to shoot the full moon rising over Marblehead Neck. By this point, the full moon had risen above the layer of haze that had obscured it earlier and the clouds had began to spread overhead.  I spotted a couple on the Crocker [...]

Marblehead Fireworks on the Fourth of July

What an incredible Fourth of July!  I took part in the Artisans Marketplace at Abbot Hall on Saturday from 10am until 5pm and felt like half the town stopped by to look at prints, buy books or just introduce themselves.  It was an incredible experience.  As soon as I packed up, I raced home and rode my bike to Marblehead Neck where friends had invited us to a last minute Fourth of July party. I had decided on a plan for this year's fireworks show beginning with the harbor illumination to be captured from Corinthian Lane.  I then walked quickly [...]
