The Top 10 of 2015 – The Northern Lights and Marblehead Light

At last we reached the #1 spot in the Top 10 of 2015 Countdown and I think you'll agree this image of the aurora borealis (or Northern Lights) was an easy choice.  So many factors have to come into place to see the aurora borealis as far south as Marblehead and it needs to be a pretty spectacular show to shine above the light pollution. On June 22, a 7 kP storm hit at just the right moment (9:50pm) for me to capture the intricate greens and purples of light playing over Cove Beach and setting up a perfect backdrop [...]

Top 10 of 2015 – Marblehead Fireworks – The Grand Finale

In any other year, this image of the grand finale of Marblehead's fireworks show set against Marblehead Light would have easily captured my #1 spot.  For this year's show, my family was invited to close friend's new home on the Neck and I quickly found my way up to their cupola.  From their I was able to capture this unique image looking down at the lighthouse and the beautiful fireworks display erupting over Marblehead harbor. The image of Marblehead fireworks above Marblehead Light reaches #3 on my Top 10 of 2015 Countdown.

Top 10 of 2015 – Watching the Moon Rise

When the blue moon rose over Marblehead in late July 2015, I was more than ready with a borrowed super telephoto lens.  By shooting this scene at 400mm, I was able to capture an incredibly large moon as well as the people watching the moon rise from Chandler Hovey Park.  The juxtaposition of the beautiful moon, iron works of Marblehead Light and people in various positions made for an instant favorite image. The first of two moon images in the top 10 list reaches #8 in the Top 10 of 2015 Countdown.

Top 10 of 2015 – Docked in a Frozen Marblehead Harbor

It's easy to look back on the incredible Winter of 2014/2015 now with near fondness considering the amazingly mild Winter that we have had thus far this year.  On February 18, I ventured out at dawn to capture a frozen Marblehead Harbor.  We had deep freeze conditions for weeks and no snow leading to a perfectly frozen surface on the harbor.  With the Boston Yacht Club dock and clubhouse anchored in the ice, the composition was too good to pass up. You can make out fine detail in the ice which served to reflect the light of the rising sun [...]

Marblehead Christmas Walk – Glover’s Regiment Crossing the Harbor

I mentioned in Tuesday's post that Glover's regiment set about re-enacting George Washington crossing the Delaware river after the Christmas Walk parade concluded.  I set off for State Street Landing to capture the scene but quickly moved away from the crowd for this spot down near the harbormaster's pier.  I had realized there was no way to capture Glover's Regiment crossing Marblehead harbor without modern boats visible from the State Street Landing.  This location afforded just that view. I waited as the regiment boarded and then made their way out to mid-harbor.  There I was able to capture them with Marblehead [...]

Perfect Night for a Moonrise

Wednesday ended up being a perfect night for a moonrise.  The first hint of an orange Beaver moon erupted into the sky behind Childrens Island and continued to climb as the sun set and the night took hold.  I shared one image from this evening that had immediately grabbed my eye but found two more shots to share as I worked on images on Thanksgiving. This image took place only 4 minutes before the one I shared on Wednesday night.  The moon can be seen with barely any clouds obstructing the view and had nearly cleared the small hill at [...]

Life is Good – the Beaver Moon rises over Marblehead

It's been 25 days since I last took a picture of Marblehead and, in the past few days, I've started to feel the need to get out and capture a view of this town.  As I mentioned in this morning's post of last month's Hunter's moon, conditions seemed good for viewing tonight's full Beaver moon rising over Marblehead and I decided to take full advantage of that. I  headed out a little before 4 and had scouted out the moonrise to determine where I might have the best vantage point.  The perfect location was just down the road from the [...]

Last Light on Marblehead Light

I've captured many images of Marblehead Light around sunset (both before after its green light turns on) and yet I had never captured the reflection of sunset's last light in the glass of the lighthouse before.  I was able to 'reach' closer to the lighthouse through the use of a borrowed zoom lens and the soft light of sunset reflecting in the glass coupled with the very full harbor made for a picture perfect image of Marblehead on a late September day.

A Churning Sky over Marblehead Light

On August 4th, a strong thunderstorm passed over Marblehead and I ended up chasing the lightning around town trying to catch bolts from various locations.  This image was taken from the beginning of the storm as the grey clouds formed and overtook the sky over Marblehead.  I wasn't sure how to describe these impressive cloud formations but they seemed to form a churning sky over Marblehead Light so I stuck with that terminology.  If someone has a better description, please let me know. Here are more images from this outing on August 4th:

Iron and Granite

It's been a while since I last shared a black and white image of Marblehead on this site.  In mid-September, I had rented a super wide angle lens from Canon and went about exploring new compositions and vantage points in town to take full advantage of my short week with the lens. On this day, I had chased the clouds throughout Marblehead and ended up at Chandler Hovey Park.  I had just worked on a few shots of Marblehead Light with a sunstar erupting beside it and then hiked down to explore the possibilities from the granite edge of the [...]
