Streaks of Clouds over Marblehead Neck

Having gone out to shoot on June 21st (the three posts shared this week) and June 22nd (the incredible aurora borealis shared last week), I decided to take the day off on June 23rd.  Well, that turned out to be a huge mistake as a beautiful sunset filled the night sky with incredible colors.  Though I tried to talk myself out of it, I promptly went out again on June 24th to 'make-up' for missing such a great show. This time I headed to the causeway and parked along the Neck before walking back toward Devereux Beach.  I always underestimate [...]

The Secret Beach

So this was where I was headed on Fathers Day and why I had spent some time on Nahant Street to capture the sunset shared yesterday.  I've been to the 'secret beach' on Cove Lane several times but felt that I had not fully explored the possible compositions there previously. The sunset had started to fade at this point and the angles for shooting the setting sun and the secret beach were few.  I spent some time capturing the view of Marblehead Light (and I would return to this exact spot the following day to capture the aurora borealis as [...]

Golden Light on an Empty Harbor

In late April, I had gone out to shoot an oncoming storm and was surprised by the incredible golden light that bathed Marblehead Neck for a few minutes before being swallowed by clouds.  That golden light was made even more beautiful against the deep blues of the storm clouds.  Without any boats in this part of the harbor, the water served to reflect the color of the sky and was only interrupted by the scattered buoys in the empty harbor. I'm reminded every so often that what has helped keep my Wednesdays in Marblehead project going is as much as the [...]

The Northern Lights and Marblehead Light

Update: An incredible G5 solar storm hit on May 10, 2024. See updated photos of the Aurora here - https://photos.wednesdaysinmhd.com/-/galleries/aurora-borealis-over-marblehead I first saw the Northern lights (or aurora borealis) from Marblehead in March 2015 during what was at the time the strongest solar storm to hit Earth in years.  I felt incredibly fortunate to have witnessed and captured the scene and never imagined I would have an opportunity to repeat it let alone improve upon it. As it happened, an even stronger solar storm event took place on June 22nd.  As night fell, the projected strength (or Kp) of the [...]

On the Rocks at Chandler Hovey Park

I hope no one is tired of images taken on Tuesday, June 9th yet.  I've shared six images from this one outing so far and all have differed by the quality of light, the composition or location. Shortly after I arrived at Chandler Hovey Park, I spotted a rainbow positioned southeast of the lighthouse.  The location made compositions tricky even with my widest angle lens.  I took a few photos from the edge of the park where the rocks form a cliff-like structure leading into the waters of Marblehead Harbor.  From there, I quickly explored other spots near the waters edge. [...]

Firing the Cannon at the Eastern Yacht Club

As luck would have it, I was finishing off the evening's photo outing just as sunset approached and the nightly tradition of colors and firing the cannon commenced.  I spent last Summer capturing this tradition at each of the yacht clubs in town.  For the prior version at the Eastern Yacht Club, I had composed the image to include Abbot Hall in the background.  I realized on this night, I could capture the view of the cannon being fired at sunset with Marblehead Light in the distance. As the light dimmed, I set up for this shot and again closed [...]

Between the Storms at Chandler Hovey Park

On Tuesday, June 9th, thunderstorms were predicted for Boston around 7:00pm and their trajectory looked like it might bring them just north of Marblehead.  Knowing that storms always make for dramatic light, I headed out to Chandler Hovey Park hoping for some great light.  I arrived at 7:15 and at first was disappointed with the too-thick clouds which were blotting out the sun.  That is until I looked behind me and spotted the rainbow!  I've shared one image of the rainbow already but this week will focus on five images that came afterwards. By 7:30pm, the rainbow had dissipated and I [...]

Fishing in the Storm

This is an image that I have wanted to share on countless occasions but always managed to find some other image to take its place.  In November 2009, I was exploring Fort Sewall when I spotted this small boat in the mouth of Marblehead Harbor.  The seas were rough and some good sized waves were coming to shore along Fort Beach. The juxtaposition of someone fishing in the storm while standing on a small boat with waves crashing around Chandler Hovey Park was quite impressive.  It was made more so by the relative size of the boat and Marblehead Light.

Sailing on a Perfect Summer Day

When we moved into our rental house on Willow Street in May 2008, we had no way of knowing the friends we would make just one door down.  Our neighbors would become surrogate grandparents to our then very young children and were more than happy to take us out on their boat when conditions were favorable.  Such was the case in early August when we went sailing on a perfect Summer day. As this was one of my first outings on a boat, I was preoccupied with capturing images of Marblehead from the water.  I had shot for much of our [...]

Light at the End of the Rainbow

Last night, storms were predicted to pass near Marblehead between 7 and 8pm.  Knowing that storms make for incredible light at sunset, I decided to head out after dinner and see if that might be the case on this occasion.  The clouds seemed to be coming from the direction of Boston and I therefore chose Chandler Hovey Park as my destination. I wasn't thrilled with the light when I first arrived at Chandler Hovey and stared up at Marblehead Light.  There was little definition in the clouds and they seemed too thick to allow any sun to shine through.  After [...]
