Purple Dawn Over an Empty Harbor

Last week, I shared images of turquoise waters all taken on the prior Wednesday in Marblehead.  I thought I would start this week in a similar way with this image taken last Wednesday at dawn. I had woken at 5:30am on this particular morning and promptly looked out the window and at the weather radar to try to discern if there were any clouds near the horizon.  I couldn't tell and decided to bundle up (it was in the 20's on this early April morning) and head out in hopes of decent clouds and light.  Without much to go on [...]

Marblehead Light Under the Stars

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out to Chandler Hovey park on Sunday at sunset hoping to catch the tail end of a large coronal mass ejection with promises of auroras in the night sky.  I was fortunate that a nice sunset developed and, after capturing it, returned to the car to warm up (it was in the 30s but the wind was whipping across the water) and change to my wide angle lens.  I then set up this composition and waited. The tricky part with stars is that the camera is able to capture much more [...]

Experimental Friday – Through the Looking Glass at Hammond Park

I was thrilled with the reception that my image from Hammond Park received early last week and happy to note that many longtime 'Headers hadn't visited the park in years but now had made plans to do so.  I hope that as a new resident of this town, I can continue to offer a fresh perspective on familiar or forgotten locations and help residents rediscover the beauty all around. With Hammond Park on my mind and the Experimental Friday coming up, my mind turned to this image made in March 2011.  I had been exploring the park on this particular [...]

Spring Comes to Hammond Park

Repeat after me 'Two More Months'... I don't know about you but this Winter is feeling very loooong after the weekend snow storm following a blizzard.  There was no way I was posting a snow photo today so I went back to the archive and found this photo taken on April 14, 2012.  You can't beat the view from Hammond Park when the trees start to bloom and a race takes place in the still empty harbor.  This was the first photo I captured when I raced to this spot last April.  I shared another version with a closer view [...]

A Puffin? In Marblehead?!

On Tuesday, a fan of my site asked if I ever photographed wildlife - especially birds.  I admitted that I had never been interested in shooting birds - it is an incredibly challenging (and expensive) branch of photography that requires inordinate patience.  Then he mentioned that he had seen a puffin in Little Harbor and I quickly changed my tune.  A puffin?  In Marblehead?!?!  This was too good to be true I thought.  I was told that he seemed to appear with some regularity at mid-tide.  The fan had been doubtful as well but noted that he definitely moved as [...]

Long Exposure – From the Top of Fountain Park

On Sunday, January 20th, after attending my son's swim meet at the JCC, I noted the clouds starting to form as we neared sunset.  I had a location in mind for a long exposure shot for some time and decided to head there in hopes that the light would work.  As I got to Fountain Park, the clouds were just starting to reach the lighthouse.  The light was starting to fade and I got to work setting up my camera with the 10-stop filter to help limit available light and extend the time the shutter could be opened. It turns [...]

Worm Moon Rises Over Marblehead Neck

On the same night that I captured Monday's image of the frozen harbor at sunset, I also managed this image of the full Worm moon rising over Marblehead Neck.  The original plan was to shoot this moon as it rose over the lighthouse.  I arrived at the location I had scouted with too much time to spare so I drove across the causeway and photographed the ice along the harbor as the sun set.  Given the clouds on the mainland side, I had little hope for the moon rise.  As I packed up and drove back across the causeway however, [...]

Cold Dawn over Marblehead Neck

Yesterday, January 23rd, was slated to be our first near-zero degree day in a while.  With the recent moderate weather and ocean temps in the 40's, I figured I had a good shot at capturing some sea smoke.  With that in mind, I woke up early on Wednesday and drove to a few spots.  Unfortunately, Redd's Pond and Little Harbor didn't have anything in the way of smoke.  I crossed my fingers and made my way to Front Street hoping for better luck.  For whatever reason, the water was smooth and smoke-free.  I sat there in the car trying to [...]

The Sun Rises over Marblehead Harbor and the Lighthouse

When I go out for a shoot, I typically will return with a number of images that I can't wait to share.  In the case of this Summer sunrise that took place at the end of June 2012, I ended up with two favorites.  The first was shared a while ago and featured a seagull that entered the frame at just the right moment.  This image sat in the queue waiting patiently for the world to see it. For sunrise and moonrise shots, I rely on an app called TPE to help predict where the sun or moon is expected [...]

Long Exposure – The Lighthouse at Sunset

On December 23rd, I headed out to Chandler Hovey Park to photography the lighthouse draped in its holiday best.  I had just finished shooting the sunset at Devereux Beach both as fiery and smokey tendrils and had found a nice angle from which to shoot the lighthouse and old oil house.  As I walked back to the car, I couldn't help but grab one more shot of the lighthouse at sunset.  As the light was fading, this ended up as a 30-second exposure (thus qualifying it for Long Exposure Tuesday).  If you look closely at the sky, you'll see a [...]
