The Full Corn Moon

The full corn moon rose over Chandler Hovey Park tonight and I was one of a half dozen photographers among many more onlookers admiring the view of the moon rising over a collection of boats in the mouth of the harbor. When I arrived at Front Street I had been hoping for a different shot than what I came away with. The lights had been hung on the lighthouse early on in the COVID era and I envisioned a shot of the moon rising with the lighthouse resplendent in lights and a collection of boats filling the waters. As sunset [...]

Low Tide at Fort Beach

On Wednesday, I headed out the door to chase storms at Riverhead (that shot is coming tomorrow) before making my way to Fort Beach in the hopes of capturing a rainbow (I didn't but got one at Castle Rock an hour later).  While at Fort Beach, I wandered up and down Front Street in search of new compositions that did not rely on the Great Tree at the Fort. When i moved far enough over, I was able to hide the emptiness of Fort Sewall with some foliage while also lucking out with a scattered collection of boats at low [...]

Weathered Tree at Chandler Hovey Park

The theme for this week seems to be shaping up as 'images that I wasn't happy with but finally figured out the right processing this weekend'.  This black and white image of a weathered tree at Chandler Hovey Park was captured on September 1, 2013. I was drawn to this composition in which the tree is able to steal focus from Marblehead Light in large part due to the curve of the clouds mimicking the canopy of the tree.  That being said, the processing never really worked out. I tried this in color and black and white and while the [...]

Sea Smoke – Remastered

Just received a print order for one of my all time favorite images of sea smoke surrounding Marblehead Light and couldn't pass up a chance to remaster this shot from 2012. Here is the new version that I thought would be a perfect share as we face 90+ degree temperatures...again. 10 year retrospective coming tomorrow...

Little Harbor – After the Storm

That was quite the storm that passed overhead before sunset! Our home weather station recorded rainfall of 3 inches per hour before the storm finally departed and, as soon as it did, I was in my car and headed out in search of a rainbow. I drove to Hammond Park and then decided to visit Little Harbor where I spotted the faintest rainbow overhead. It wasn't the image I hoped for but I spotted some interesting clouds coalescing behind Gerry Island and decided to watch and see if the sun might shine at the right moment to illuminate the scene. [...]

Early Riser

Not one to leave well enough alone, I set my alarm for 4am on Saturday morning hoping for another opportunity to capture the comet Neowise. I wasn't quite sure where it might be in the pre-dawn sky so I pulled over at Riverhead beach and used the app to locate it. Unfortunately, the comet was too close to the horizon to be photographed and I was quickly gaining light and losing the chance to shoot the equivalent of a star in the early morning sky. With a camera in hand and this scene before me, I couldn't let the opportunity [...]

Neowise visits Marblehead Light

Last week, I started to see more and more images of the comet Neowise (C/2020 F3) posted by my photography friends. Most were in much darker locations but I wondered if I might have a chance of capturing the comet against the backdrop of a local landmark. I found an app called GoSkyWatch Planetarium that seemed very simple to use and helped me locate Neowise in the sky. Once that was done, I headed out on Thursday night and tried to plan out a shoot for when the clouds lifted. I thought my best chance might be at Chandler Hovey [...]

Chandler Hovey Park and the Harbor

The thing about aerial images is that you don't always need to fly 200 or 400 feet above the ground. I quickly learned that bringing the drone off shore and raised a bit off the water provided some incredible compositions as in this shot captured on July 26, 2017. Just a typical summer day in Marblehead with a perfect view of Chandler Hovey Park, the harbor and Abbot Hall in the distance

Broken Moon

Turns out I was 0 for 2 on Saturday, July 4th having gone to Castle Rock for the moonrise (but left before the moon appeared over some low-lying haze) and then missed any rogue fireworks. Just as I 'made up' for the missed fireworks with yesterday's image, I thought I would share this 'to be published' shot of a broken moon from August 2018. Just as this weekend, the moonrise was initially hidden by low lying clouds/haze but, once it appeared, the sturgeon moon was a brilliant red. I watched as it rose from my vantage point along Front Street [...]

Fireworks over the Water

Since moving to Marblehead in May 2008, capturing the view of fireworks over the water has been one of my favorite outings each July. Sadly, for the second time in 12 years, the fireworks celebration has been cancelled (the last time was due to an awful ocean storm in 2014 preventing safe passage of the barge). This image comes from the show on July 4, 2018 and the vantage point of the causeway. I was in the same spot as for yesterday's shot of the harbor illumination and didn't even need my full zoom to capture this shot of red [...]
