Dusting of Snow on Downtown Marblehead

Today's image comes from my 'to be posted' archive and continues the theme of images of snow in Marblehead from past winters. This aerial shot was captured on the morning of March 14, 2018 after a dusting of snow fell and I was able to capture historic downtown Marblehead with its familiar landmarks blanketed in white. If you would like to see these images without realizing on FB/IG, I added an easy sign up for my daily and/or weekly email digests that include all images posted to Wednesdays in Marblehead. You can sign up below any of my current/prior posts. [...]

Pond View at Sunset

It's been a while since I posted any images of Marblehead. This was partly meant as a break to allow me to recharge and ended up being great timing as our winter without snow did not offer many opportunities for photography over the past few months. With the lack of snow this season, I went through my archive looking for images of Marblehead in the snow and found five to share this week and next. I don't plan on jumping back to the daily posts just yet though which means the Facebook and Instagram algorithms may not show these posts [...]

A Fresh Start – Cancelling Kickstarter and Refocusing on Photography

Crocker Park at dawn turns out to be a great time to think and ponder a fresh start to this Wednesdays in Marblehead project... When I first started exploring my new home town through landscape photography, I did it for myself. It was a way to exercise the creative part of my brain and challenge myself to capture the beauty I found in the more scenic locations around town as well as the hidden ones. Along the way, I found great joy when my images resonated with others. That joy grew when I was able to put together a book [...]

Snowy Sunset

With a surprise March storm dropping seven inches of snow on Marblehead on Sunday night, I held out hope for photographing the town blanketed in white after finishing up work on Monday. I spent Monday in the clinic while my kids enjoyed the first snow day of the season (enjoyed might be a stretch as the boy was in charge of clearing the heavy snow from our driveway). As soon as the last patient left, I got in my car to head home and grabbed my camera bag on the way to Foster Street. With sunset now happening at 5:30pm, [...]

Snow Day at Fort Sewall

Shortly after moving to Marblehead, I captured my favorite image of Fort Sewall with I found the red arches and this tree perfectly coated in fresh snow. I entered that image in the Marblehead Festival of Arts in 2008 and realized too late I had misspelled the title as Fort Sewell. Too late to change it, the photo was rejected - it still hangs over my desk at home. I returned to Fort Sewall during each snow storm to try to recapture that scene with a better camera and without the snowbank that always bugged me but never found the [...]

Top 10 of 2018 – #1 Abbot Hall Caked in Snow

This is my favorite image captured in 2018. On March 14th, I had gone out with my Phantom 4 Pro drone to shoot the streets of downtown Marblehead with a fresh coat of snow. I launched the drone shortly before 7am and quickly found that the morning sun was shining on Abbot Hall and illuminating its face now caked in snow.  I adjusted the height of the drone to get this centered view and then saw the flash of light in the distance created by the sun reflecting off the buildings in Boston. I've since printed this image a few [...]

Sunrise on Frozen Pond

This will be the last new image I share in 2018 (I think) as I plan to start my Top 10 of 2018 countdown on Monday.  That will lead up to the annual New Years Day slideshow looking back at all of the images shared on Wednesdays in Marblehead in the past year. Today's image comes from the morning after yesterday's first snow of the season. We ended up getting quite a bit of snow that day and I was surprised to find Redd's Pond to have nearly frozen when I arrived to shoot the sunrise the next morning.  As [...]

First Snow of the Season

I was looking back at my 'to be posted' archive last night and stopped at this image from December 9th and the first snow of the season. It's hard to believe that we were already seeing snow at this time last year given this year's strange wet fall and cold but dry early winter. I had gone out at noon on this Saturday to capture the falling snow and ended up at this spot on State Street from which I could compose an image to capture the star on the crane (hard to see with it not being illuminated yet). [...]

The Road Curves

As small as Marblehead is, it still amazes me when I notice small scenes that seem like they belong somewhere else rather than in this New England town. This black and white image of the canopy of snow covered trees was captured on the same day as yesterday's shot of Old Town House. I had driven up towards Beacon Street after exploring downtown Marblehead and parked my car facing this section where the road curves and climbs a small hill under a canopy of trees. The scene would be as likely in Vermont or Colorado as steps away from Grace [...]

Snowy Branches over Old Town House

With snow falling yesterday, I figured the window for sharing images of snow was extended for just a bit longer. Today's image wasn't taken during the April snowfall but rather on December 10th - back when snow was something to be admired. I had driven to downtown Marblehead after a picture perfect snow fall created snowy branches throughout the town. I parked in the small lot across from Old Town House and took note of these snow lined branches perfectly framing this view of Washington Street.
