Blooming Chestnut Tree Aglow at Sunset

On Saturday night, my wife, son and I took the dog out to Crocker Park for an impromptu picnic dinner (my daughter was at a friend's house).  After finishing a nice meal from Shubie's for us (two slices of Marblehead House of Pizza for the 10 year old...), we wandered around the park letting our puppy explore this new area. Even from a distance, I noticed a change in the large chestnut tree at Crocker park - it was in full bloom with incredible pyramidal flowers dotting its full canopy.  Thankfully, I had thought to bring my camera bag (just [...]

The Great Tree and the Perfect Storm

This image is the perfect example of the archive that I have built up over these past six years.  On July 24th, a perfect rain cloud passed over Marblehead and I was fortunate to have the camera in my trunk as I drove back into town.  I chased the cloud and great light from 7:30 until 8:10pm capturing a rainbow, beautiful sunset and a variety of images of this rain cloud. Here, I sought to include the great tree at Fort Sewall with a view out towards Marblehead Harbor and the golden light reflecting off the rain cloud.  The small [...]

Crooked Tree on Peach’s Point

I've been fascinated by this crooked tree on Peach's Point (or is it Peaches Point?) since moving to Marblehead in 2008.  The tree seems to be in such a precarious position along the ocean's edge and with only the thinnest of trunks to keep it upright. Meanwhile, the surrounding homes in this area of Marblehead are truly magnificent in stature and architecture thus serving to exaggerate further the oddity of this simple crooked tree. This image is another from the series captured last Wednesday and was taken only 15 minutes after yesterday's shot of the boat ramp.  The sun had [...]

Catching the Sunset at Fort Sewall

February 21st ended up being a very productive day with great light affording new compositions of Gerry Island (coming Wednesday) and this view of the great tree at Fort Sewall.  While I've taken photos from this spot before, I don't recall ever including General Glover's plaque in the frame. As the sun set, it lit up the plaque (as well as a house on the Neck) and I composed this image to include the benches looking out over Marblehead Harbor and the tree backlit by a beautiful Winter sunset.

Moonlit Reflection at Fort Beach

The unseasonably warm weather this weekend made Spring feel as though it was just around the corner.  As the warm air began to give way to slightly cooler weather this week, I spotted the chance for a good sunset and decided to head out to capture the scene from Fort Sewall.  Before I left, I noted that the nearly full moon was due to rise at 4:30pm (an hour before sunset) and thought I would aim for a shot of it as well since I wouldn't get the chance tomorrow night. I arrived at Fort Beach and found thick clouds [...]

The Christmas Full Moon

Last night, I shared an image of the Christmas full moon rising over Marblehead and illuminating the dinghy in Little Harbor with its perfect Christmas tree.  At the time, I had said that this wasn't the shot I had intended and, maybe subconsciously, knew that I would be trying again so I titled that image A Christmas Full Moon.  This image is the one I had envisioned and am so glad I headed out again tonight to capture it. After yesterday's adventure, I rechecked the time and location of tonight's moonrise and was pleased to see it would be late [...]

A Christmas Full Moon

The first Christmas full moon in nearly 40 years rose tonight over Marblehead and I had envisioned an image of the small dinghy in Little Harbor with its Christmas Tree as a perfect foreground for the shot.  As the fog and cloudy skies of this morning finally broke at 2pm, I started to wonder if I might actually be able to capture a shot of the Christmas full moon. I headed to Beacon Street and the Marblehead Lobster Company where I set up my camera and waited.  As I watched the darkening sky for any hint of the Christmas full [...]

Light Up the Tree at St. Michael’s

Recently, I received an email asking me if I had the chance to photograph the tree in front of St. Michael's Church decorated in holiday lights.  While I had captured the trees at Abbot Hall and National Grand Bank in past Decembers, I had never noticed the tree at St. Michael's lit up for the season.  On Tuesday, I headed out before sunset hoping the clouds would break in time for me to capture a beautiful tree against an equally stunning sky.  I set up and waited, and waited but the tree never lit.  I captured a number of images of the [...]

Tree of Life

In late May of 2013, I had gone out on a foggy morning looking for a new spot to shoot.  As I drove around town, I found myself going past the Star of the Sea cemetery and quickly pulled over when I saw this incredible tree among the headstones. It was difficult getting the full size of the tree in the frame while also finding a good foreground element to anchor the image.  The decision to process the final shot as black and white was easy in comparison.

See the Stars at Fort Sewall

In the early morning hours of April 18, I had gone out in search of the Milky Way and returned with several images of the night sky over Marblehead.  This image was taken just after the one from the edge of Fort Sewall and before the next location at Castle Rock. I had envisioned this view of stars seeming to explode in light around the great tree at Fort Sewall and found this spot at the bottom of the small hill from which to shoot it.  It took a bit of work to bring out the stars while keeping light [...]
