Hunter Moon over the Corinthian

Tonight's full Hunter moon was dubbed a supermoon for its proximity to Earth and larger than average appearance in the night sky.  I had plotted out its projected rise from multiple locations in town but was hoping for a new composition rather than relying on a shot of it coming up against Marblehead Light.  I had captured the moon rising over the Eastern Yacht Club once before and so I plotted the perfect spot from which to shoot theHunter moon over the Corinthian tonight. I set up at Crocker Park and shot the surprisingly nice sunset with views looking back toward the [...]

Sunrise over Marblehead Neck

Please read/share - updates on future postings Since starting Wednesdays in Marblehead in August 2008, I've shared over 1,500 images of this incredible town.  For the past few months, I've felt my creativity dwindling and have begun to feel the need to keep up with daily postings as more chore than enjoyment.  I know I still have much to explore but feel that to do so, I need to stop the daily morning postings (at least for now).  For the foreseeable future, I plan to share a favorite image (or more) soon after an outing but the timing of those [...]

Churning Waves and the Lifeguard Chair

As a storm makes its way up the East coast, I'm reminded of this view of churning waves and the lifeguard chair from early September.  The storm that threatened us then led only to some incredible waves and awesome surfing scenes amidst picture perfect weather.  Here's hoping that Florida receives nothing more than a glancing blow and that we see some more wave action headed our way.

Chestnut Tree at Crocker Park

I wanted to share something other than a harbor scene and found this image of the chestnut tree at Crocker Park in my archive.  I had gone out at the end of May to Crocker Park only to find this tree in full bloom.  The blossoms kept me busy trying to find compositions from every angle. In the end, I had three favorites and shared two in the Spring.  Here is the final image of the chestnut tree in full bloom at Crocker Park.  I wonder if its leaves have changed colors for Fall yet...

Corinthian Yacht Club on a late Summer Evening

The Corinthian Yacht Club was organized over 130 years ago and stands along Corinthian Lane as the Neck curves into Marblehead Harbor.  On the evening of September 20, I had gone out to capture the late Summer fog that had rolled into the harbor and decided on shooting from Corinthian Lane (and the shores below) in what would turn out to be a perfect spot to capture an incredible sunset. Before the sun set, the subtle fog in the harbor served to soften the evening light and set a nice glow on the facade of the Corinthian Yacht Club.  While [...]

Sunset Colors can Change in a Minute (or Five)

One of the good (or bad) results of a successful outing in Marblehead is coming back with far more than one image to share.  Especially in the Summer, sunset colors can change in a minute (or five) and result in very different images despite similar compositions. Such was the case on July 18.  I had made my way to a favorite spot on Parker Lane for what turned out to be a beautiful sunset and immediately shared a panorama view that took in the entirety of the harbor from my vantage point as well as clouds overhead reflecting the colors [...]

A New Dawn for a New Year

Today is Rosh Hashanah in the Jewish calendar and so I searched my archives for an image taken at dawn only to find that I hadn't taken one in quite some time.  This shot was captured in September 2013 and, while I've been out at sunrise on a number of occasions this year, I haven't had the opportunity to shoot at dawn yet this Summer or Fall.  I am hoping to correct the lack of dawn and sunrise images of our harbor in the days and weeks to come.  In the meantime, I wish you a Shana Tova (Happy New [...]

Fighting the Current

This seemed like a good image to end the week on with rain in the forecast and with the crisp Fall air signaling the coming close of boating season.  As an offshore storm sent crashing waves into Marblehead beaches and Castle Rock, the harbor offered some protection for boats moored within its borders.  However, this one wooden sailboat perched near the mouth of the harbor was definitely fighting the current as whitecaps formed clear across the harbor. I'm not sure who owns this boat or even what class or type it might be but its clean lines and beautiful wooden [...]

Night on the Neck

Phew!  If you've been wondering why my posts tapered off and became non-existent in the past week, it was because I was studying during any free time I had for my Boards exam.  Every 10 years, physicians need to 'certify' (their words) that we are staying up to date on the practice of medicine by sitting for an examination.  In my case, the American Board of Allergy and Immunology put together 200 questions to be answered in a span of 4 hours covering the full breadth of what I do day in and day out.  I took the opportunity to listen [...]

Fire in the Sky

Tonight, I was fortunate to capture one of the most incredible displays of color and light as a fire in the sky marked one of the last sunsets of this Summer in Marblehead.  I had missed out on last night's sunset and was jealous of the shots populating my Facebook and Instagram feeds.  As sunset approached and the air picked up humidity, I decided to head out hoping for a decent showing. I drove across the causeway and stopped along Foster Street to assess the position of the sun in the sky.  From there, I headed over to Corinthian Lane and [...]
