Mother’s Grave – Happy Halloween

With cemeteries whose age is counted in the hundreds of years, Marblehead is home to some very unique gravestones.  My personal favorite is this simple one engraved with the lone word Mother that can be found at the Green Street cemetery.  The gravestone is haunting for its simplicity and happens to lie in front of a maple tree. That combination made it an easy favorite to shoot and one that I've visited on a number of occasions for subtly different compositions. I couldn't think of a better image than this one of Mother's grave to wish everyone a Happy Halloween. [...]

Life on the West Shore

For the first few years, my family lived in a rental on Willow Road mere steps from the Village street launch (otherwise known as Rockett Landing).  After moving to the Clifton Area, I've returned to this area less often than I would have thought given its beautiful scenery. In early August, the sky filled with a picture perfect mix of white clouds and dark blue skies.  I stopped at a number of locations on this day to capture scenes of Marblehead on a Summer day and couldn't resist walking the length of the float at the end of Village Street [...]

Masts and Steeples on a Foggy Evening

On the evening of July 5th, an incredible display of fog descended upon Marblehead Harbor and I was fortunate to have been at Chandler Hovey Park from where I capture image after image as conditions quickly changed.  As the fog reached its peak, it created a sepia-like tone to the view of boats in Marblehead harbor and I found this composition made up mostly of ship masts and steeples in the foreground.  The fog hid nearly all other houses across the water and created a scene that seemed at once suited to the works of Renaissance masters rather than anything [...]

Peak Foliage at Waterside Cemetery

This year's drought and weather meant poor conditions for catching peak foliage in Marblehead.  As it turned out, October 2012 offered ample opportunities to capture trees in their full Autumn brilliance - and especially so at Waterside Cemetery. This shot of a maple tree displaying peak foliage at Waterside Cemetery was captured on a picture perfect mid-October day.  I decided to include the rock wall as a frame for the image to counter the sky and tree (as well as hide other elements to the right of the image).

Red Door and the Hunters Moon

As the Hunters Moon set on Sunday morning, I ran around Chandler Hovey Park trying to find different compositions with which to capture the beautifully lit full moon.  At one point I was perched on the rocks shooting dawn breaking behind Marblehead Rock and then turned to see the full moon setting between the supports of Marblehead Light. I quickly altered my position and set up this image to include the red door marking the base and entrance to Marblehead Light on the right with the full Hunters Moon setting between diagonal supports on the left.

Sunset Silhouette

On October 15th, I had gone out to Crocker Park to shoot the full Hunter moon rising over the Corinthian Yacht Club.  As I shot out over the harbor, I kept looking back at the incredible sunset forming behind me.  As soon as I captured the perfect shot of the moon rising, I raced up to a familiar spot to shoot towards Abbot Hall and capture the last bursts of color in the night sky. The dynamic range between the sky and Abbot Hall was too large for the sensor to capture details in both and so I decided to [...]

Hooper at Dawn

On an early October morning, I met up with my friend Steve Clay at St. Michael's Church and the two of us successfully ascended to the top of the building's new steeple.  This was my third trip up to this spot overlooking historic downtown Marblehead and I was treated to great colors and a prefect sunrise.  I shared the sunrise view shortly after taking it but haven't had a chance to show any other images yet. During my very first ascent to this spot (on the scaffolding erected at the time), I found this composition of Hooper Street and its [...]

A Sailing Town at Sunset

Marblehead has been called many things but it is most certainly a sailing town and all its residents know of the old refrain - Red Sky at Night, Sailors Delight.  On a late September evening, I was treated to an incredible sunset from my spot on Corinthian Lane.  The colors built from an initially foggy yellow to orange then purple and finally this red sky at night.  It wasn't until 20 minutes after the sun set that the colors in the sky began to fade and I packed up for the night. Hope you enjoy this view of our sailing [...]

Sunset over Inner Marblehead Harbor

As I waited for the moon to rise on Saturday night, I was treated to an unexpected sunset over inner Marblehead harbor.  I had only checked weather and cloud forecasts as far as the moonrise was concerned and hadn't expected anything as beautiful as this sunset which spanned the inner harbor and causeway. I'm not sure if 'inner Marblehead harbor' is the right term for this area but was at a loss if a better nautical term existed. There were just enough boats moored in the harbor to add a needed element that broke up the water while also showing [...]

Hunter Moon sets over Old North Church

Conditions were perfect for last night's full Hunter moonrise and were predicted to be equally good for the moonset this morning.  I woke at 6, walked the dog, and then headed out to Chandler Hovey Park where I had plotted the moonset to occur just behind the Old North Church. It took a little while to find the perfect spot from which to capture this image of the Hunter moon setting over Old North Church.  There are still just enough boats in the harbor that finding a clean angle without masts in the frame can be a bit tricky.  This [...]
