Along the Avenue

In April 2012, I was fortunate to be taken up in a Cessna for a flight over Marblehead.  I've written about this flight on a number of past posts and have shared various images from the short but productive trip. As I looked through the 'to be posted' folder for images to share this week, I found this one taken as we passed over Atlantic Avenue.  I immediately spotted Shubies and Marblehead Bank among the other retailers and homes that can be found along the avenue. Here are more images from that flight over Marblehead:

Colorful Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

In June 2013, I had set a goal to photograph five of the Marblehead yacht clubs firing their sunset cannons.  One of the final images was of the cannon at the Dolphin Yacht Club and, on that night, I was fortunate to capture the cannon firing under a subtle rainbow in the evening sky. A few minutes after taking that image, I composed this one to include the kayaks in the dock adding color to the pink sunset over Marblehead Harbor. Here is the image of the sunset cannon firing at the Dolphin Yacht Club:

Open Seating for Watching the Ocean

In August 2012, I was able to realize the goal of shooting the Lipton Tea House on Marblehead Neck.  Once finished with that incredible structure, I was invited by the owner to photograph other locations on the beautifully manicured grounds abutting the Atlantic Ocean. I found this Adirondack chairs perfectly positioned for watching the ocean and went about figuring out possible compositions.  As you can see by the strong shadows, the sun was nearly overhead at this point which made for less than ideal conditions.  I hope the final image conveys both the luxury of being able to sit in [...]

Coming Home to Marblehead

In mid-July of 2013, a friend took me out on his boat a few hours before sunset for a cruise around Marblehead.  We had perfect conditions and light which resulted in some of my favorite images of Marblehead from the water. At one point, we had gone out to Children's Island and, on our return, I spotted the Hannah Glover ferrying campers back home to Marblehead after a day spent on the island.  I captured this image with the Hannah Glover and Marblehead Light bookending Marblehead Neck under soft clouds and light. It's no wonder that Marblehead is home to [...]

Rainbow over Marblehead Harbor

What better image to follow yesterday's rain cloud than this beautiful rainbow which formed over Marblehead Harbor on a late July evening.  I've captured rainbows from many locations throughout Marblehead but have always hoped for a large one over a full harbor.  The location of this rainbow was absolutely perfect incorporating Marblehead Light in the final scene.

The Great Tree and the Rain Cloud

Yesterday's torrential rains reminded me of a unique opportunity I had in late July to capture a large rain cloud over Marblehead Harbor and the Neck.  I shared another image of this rain cloud focusing on the boats off Fort Beach.  Shortly after capturing that image, I made my way to Fort Sewall to explore additional compositions. I ended up shooting the great tree at Fort Sewall from two vantage points but preferred this one with the large rain cloud easily spotted over Marblehead Neck.  You can also just make out Marblehead Light visible through a break in the foliage [...]

Abbot in the Clouds

As I made my way around town on Saturday scouting out locations for the lunar eclipse, I found myself staring up at the familiar facade of Abbot Hall.  I had come up Atlantic Avenue headed toward Abbot Hall to check angles for the projected path of the moon and I realized I had never captured an image of Abbot Hall from this vantage point. The appearance of Abbot Hall after a slight turn on Atlantic Avenue (and the similar one when turning onto Washington Street from Pleasant) seems to be one of those odd moments where I know that Abbot [...]

The Corinthian Moon

On Sunday evening, the Harvest moon was labeled as a supermoon due to its proximity to the Earth and everyone was abuzz about the total lunar eclipse that was to take place later that night.  I had gone out to shoot the Harvest moon rising over Marblehead Neck the night before but it came up a bit too early for a nice golden glow to reflect off its surface.  On Sunday, I knew I would go out later at night and had just put some chicken on the grill when I looked at the clear sky and made some quick [...]

Lunar Eclipse and Abbot Hall

On Sunday, September 27th, a total lunar eclipse was set to take place.  Not only was this to be a total lunar eclipse but it was taking place during a full supermoon which lent itself to the hashtag #superbloodmoon due to the expected red color of the moon during totality.  I had scouted a few locations in the days leading up to the event and then prayed for clear skies.  Thankfully, everything came together perfectly on Sunday night...all except the location of the moon relative to every other object in Marblehead.  Note: this final image is a composite of two [...]

The Sun Circle at Preston Beach

This is the third image this week captured on August 29th though, unlike the others, this one was taken at night.  I had spent this weekend chasing the supermoon and had been somewhat thwarted in my attempts to shoot the moon rising from Preston Beach.  As the moon rose higher in the sky, I moved out toward Beach Bluff Park wondering if I might be able to fit the bright moon inside the sun circle erected there. Though I couldn't get the moon to show in the circular cutout of stone, it did form a brilliant glow immediately over the [...]
