Fall Colors on the Forest River

This year has been quite lackluster when it comes to capturing Fall colors in Marblehead.  Whether the lack of rain this Summer or the extended warmth thus far has led to this year's mix of bare trees amongst green one, the end result has limited my outings to capture foliage.  I have a shot in mind for this week but, in the meantime, here is one from 2014. In contrast, 2014 was a banner year for capturing Fall colors in Marblehead.  I've shared a number of images over the past year but this one of the Forest River has remained in [...]

Iron and Granite

It's been a while since I last shared a black and white image of Marblehead on this site.  In mid-September, I had rented a super wide angle lens from Canon and went about exploring new compositions and vantage points in town to take full advantage of my short week with the lens. On this day, I had chased the clouds throughout Marblehead and ended up at Chandler Hovey Park.  I had just worked on a few shots of Marblehead Light with a sunstar erupting beside it and then hiked down to explore the possibilities from the granite edge of the [...]

An Iconic View

On Thursday, I shared an image of Abbot Hall, Old North Church and the new St. Michael's steeple captured on a recent dawn morning.  This composition was what really brought me out on that day and it could not have happened without the help of three people. Ulrike Welsch is a phenomenal local photographer and I happened upon her image of Abbot Hall and Old North Church juxtaposed so that it wasn't clear which was in front of the other.  I commented in the prior post that I learned the location of this shot from Uli but was dismayed to [...]

A Seat for the Moonrise at Crocker Park

In late September, I headed out to Crocker Park to capture the moonrise.  This was to be a supermoon given its proximity to Earth and the lunar eclipse was due to take place the following night. I had hoped to capture some foliage in the trees at Crocker Park to go along with the moonrise but the warm temperatures had kept the leaves from changing to their Fall colors.  Instead, I sought out different compositions and ended up behind the swing bench with a nice view of Marblehead harbor still filled with boats. The moon rose a bit before sunset [...]

Sunrise through the Cloudbank

The temperatures on Saturday, October 17 threatened to dip below freezing overnight and I thought there might be a chance of seeing seasmoke in the harbor.  I had to be in Portsmouth for a conference at 8:15am but figured I would have just enough time to capture the sunrise from Front Street. As I drove, the temperature on my car's thermometer displayed a cold 32F on this mid-October day and I remained with high hopes until I reached Front Street.  There was no seasmoke to see though the cold air above warm water did combine to form a nice cloud [...]

The Red Glow of Dawn

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out in the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday morning hoping to shoot a unique composition of Abbot Hall, Old North Church and the new St. Michael's steeple lined up in a row.  As I set up for that shot, I kept glancing over my shoulder watching the sky grow brighter and brighter as the red glow of dawn bloomed behind Cormorant Rock. I quickly rotated the tripod and composed this image - luckily the entirety of Cormorant Rock fit within the frame using the 600mm lens.  Though the morning featured a cloudless [...]

A Perfect Morning in Marblehead

I can't imagine a better start to the day than capturing this image on a perfect morning in Marblehead yesterday.  The road to this shot was long and convoluted - I hope you don't mind a bit of a backstory... A few years ago, I happened upon an image by Ulrike Welsch of Abbot Hall and Old North Church juxtaposed so that one couldn't quite tell which was in front of the other.  The composition was nothing short of brilliant and I tried in vain to figure out where it was taken from.  Fast forward to a recent Farmer's Market [...]

October Sky over the Causeway

Yesterday began with fog then rain and stayed grey for much of the day.  As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, the clouds broke up and I thought there might be a chance for a decent sunset.  I had missed a few good ones lately so I made up my mind to head out. I stopped at a number of locations including Rocket Landing off Village Street, Parker Lane on the Neck and a few other old favorites before circling back and stopping at Devereux Beach.  I looked up as I got out of the car and [...]

Fall Sunset at Redd’s Pond

On Sunday night, my son and I ventured out to scout out a new location for a shoot.  It was great having him with me to help carry gear and bat away mosquitos as I explored a new-to-me vantage point.  We packed up as the sun began to set on a cloudless sky and made our way home to catch the second half of the Patriots game. As we rounded the corner at Redd's Pond, I saw this scene before me and, before I said a thing, my son asked if we were going to stop and shoot the sunset....that's [...]

Ending the Day at the BYC

I started this week with an image captured in July 2013 while on a boat ride around Marblehead.  It only seemed fitting to end the week with a shot from later in the night on that same day. We ended up inside Marblehead Harbor as the sun set and motored to the causeway before heading back out to the mooring in Salem Harbor.  As we slowly passed through the crowded harbor, I quickly composed images and shot them as fast as I could in the waning light.  At this point we had reached the Boston Yacht Club and I composed [...]
