The Neck at Sunset

For anyone with a boat, this would likely be a familiar view but as someone who doesn't get out on the water very much, I was in awe the first time I spotted the Neck appearing as its own perfect island. This image was capture on July 16, 2013 as we approached Marblehead Harbor from a sunset outing. Between the silhouette of Marblehead Light and the various levels of clouds reflecting different colors of light, I was struck by the simple beauty of the scene before me.

Summer Days on the Water

On the second 90+ degree day in a row and the very last day of spring, we were invited out for a dinghy ride around the harbor by former neighbors and good friends. My wife, daughter and I were thrilled to accept the invitation to not only break up the heat of the day but also the monotony of these times. And so it was that we made our way to the Boston Yacht Club and out on the harbor for a dinghy ride. I ended up taking more photos of my daughter learning to pilot the small boat than [...]

Passing Showers

Capturing rainfall sometimes seems more difficult than the rainbow afterwards and yet the reward for being in the right spot is a very dramatic scene such as this with curtains of water coming down over Marblehead Neck. With our first heat wave of the season and only one day of rain in the past 2-3 weeks, this seemed like a good shot to finish off the week.

Moonlit Sunset

Today we go back 7 years to July 15, 2013 and this moonlit sunset over Devereux Beach. I had decided to push the exposure time to 6 seconds by lowering the ISO to 50 and the aperture of the lens to f/22 which served to turn the ocean water into a perfectly calm canvas for reflecting the soft pink light of sunset. The half moon was a nice bonus to break up that patch of sky over the clouds.

Foggy Nights in the Harbor

In ten years of capturing images of Marblehead, a few outings stand out and near the top of the list is July 5, 2016. I took 40 images that night that I marked as keepers which is just an insane number of images but the light changed so fast and I was able to shoot such varied compositions from a few vantage points that, even with today's image, I'm only halfway through the pile... With the fog rolling into the harbor at sunset, I was treated to soft pastel colors breaking up the view around Abbot Hall. Hope you agree [...]

Wednesdays in Marblehead Book – only 125 copies left

I started Wednesdays in Marblehead in 2010 in order to learn more about my new hometown having moved here in May 2008. Along the way, amazing opportunities opened up and I found myself selling prints of my work and, eventually, a book. I was just checking my home inventory of books and realized I only have 125 copies left of this second and likely final printing. With that in mind, I wanted to mention that the book was available and maybe suggest it as a great gift for the recent graduate to take with them to college in the [...]

The Long View at Redds Pond

It's easy to stop at the entrance to Redds Pond and take a shot across the water at the facade of Pond View squared up against the water. It's so easy that I often forget about the long view that can be seen just a quick stroll down the path as in this image from July 21, 2014. From a slightly different location, the view of the house and its place on the pond seems drastically altered. I'll have to remember to walk down this path again sometime soon...

Reflected Light

I have had another image from this photoshoot hanging in my home office since I captured it on June 7, 2016. That image features the whole of the lighthouse reflected in the collected pool of water along the path leading to the iron structure. This one was taken 5 minutes later and I decided to change my position to better capture the beautiful sky behind Marblehead Light while choosing to reflect the tree rather than the lighthouse.

Milking the Sunset

Last shot from last Wednesday's sunset and, as the title says, it really did feel like I was milking the sunset for all it was worth... I captured images of the setting sun from along the water's edge and then headed back up the ramp to find one last cloud reflecting the light of the setting sun. I quickly set up and composed this image capturing that cloud over Marblehead Light with its lights just visible behind the Corinthian Yacht Club and more than a few boats having found their moorings for the summer.
