State Street, Marblehead

I have reworked this 17-image panorama of State Street on at least four occasions since capturing it on June 23, 2016 but have never been happy with the end results until tonight. It was a tough scene to shoot with the last light of day in the sky and deep shadows between the stately homes along this historic street in downtown Marblehead. I think I finally got to a point that I'm happy with and hope you agree that this image captures the feel of standing in the middle of State Street and taking in the view of these beautifully [...]

Larger Than Life

I went out twice this past week to capture the moonrise and ended up getting skunked by cloud cover both times. I waited over an hour on Friday night but the moon refused to show and I headed home empty handed. Luckily, I still have 40 images of moonrises and moonsets in Marblehead that have not been published yet and pulled this one of a larger than life moon from a forgotten shoot in February 2020. The moon appears huge thanks to the use of a 400mm focal length which served to flatten the distance between foreground and background and [...]

Sunset at the Waters Edge

So this is a perfect example of what happens when I go out for a shoot and have decent light to play with. I shared one image from Wednesday night's outing yesterday and here is another captured 7 minutes later. I normally would have shared one favorite from this shoot and put the other in the 'to be published' archive where it might sit for weeks, months or years. Seeing the two images one after the other, it's interesting to note how different the scene appears from the same exact location but having dropped down to the waters edge here [...]

Crocker Sunset

Last night was my first outing in weeks and this is the first 'new' photo I've been able to share since the shot of a sailboat at Redd's several weeks ago (the others have all been pulled from my to-be-published folder). I couldn't decide if tonight's sky might break at the last minute and give way to a nice sunset so I took a chance and threw my bag in the car. I quickly noticed the western sky held more promise than the view east and crossed the causeway.  I kept watch on the clouds as I drove up the [...]

That Old Tree

Look what I found when digging through unpublished images from past Junes - that old tree at the Fort! At the time I didn't think much of this shot with a simple composition split between the tree and a solitary sailboat on its mooring. At the time, I was using the tree to help balance the focal point of the sailboat. Now, seven years after the image was taken in June 12, 2013, the view of the Giving Tree with its full canopy steals the eye and is a wonderful reminder of the majesty of this now lost symbol.

June Storm in the Harbor

[Update] - well...that was short lived... I was wrong. I decided to give up posting to Facebook and Instagram because I was frustrated with their algorithms and all of the politics and hate (mostly on FB). But then I opened up Facebook this morning and saw a beautiful shot of a spectacular sunrise from Alex Falk and realized I was wrong. This shot brought a smile to my face and, if my images can do the same to you amidst everything going on, it is worth the minor frustration. Ironically, you'll have to visit my Facebook page to see his [...]

Pink Light over Abbot

This is one of my favorite spots and a composition I have shot in various conditions with different results each time. This particular shot was captured on May 23, 2018 with a sunset that offered just enough of a pink glow overhead to add interest to the otherwise flat evening light.
