Broken Moon

Turns out I was 0 for 2 on Saturday, July 4th having gone to Castle Rock for the moonrise (but left before the moon appeared over some low-lying haze) and then missed any rogue fireworks. Just as I 'made up' for the missed fireworks with yesterday's image, I thought I would share this 'to be published' shot of a broken moon from August 2018. Just as this weekend, the moonrise was initially hidden by low lying clouds/haze but, once it appeared, the sturgeon moon was a brilliant red. I watched as it rose from my vantage point along Front Street [...]

Abbot’s Finale

I went out on Saturday night in the hopes of capturing some rogue fireworks shots but, as luck would have it, I was out of position for the shots I had envisioned. The following morning, I ran into a neighbor who told me that there were a few shots that seemed to explode right near Abbot Hall which instantly reminded me of this shot from 2016's show. I had photographed the fireworks from the Dolphin Yacht Club that year and ended up with a few keepers. I knew the location wouldn't work for a finale and I had scouted a [...]

Fireworks over the Water

Since moving to Marblehead in May 2008, capturing the view of fireworks over the water has been one of my favorite outings each July. Sadly, for the second time in 12 years, the fireworks celebration has been cancelled (the last time was due to an awful ocean storm in 2014 preventing safe passage of the barge). This image comes from the show on July 4, 2018 and the vantage point of the causeway. I was in the same spot as for yesterday's shot of the harbor illumination and didn't even need my full zoom to capture this shot of red [...]

Abbot and the Harbor Illumination

Two years ago, I decided to capture the annual harbor illumination and fireworks show from atop the causeway. I had on my longest lens and, when the flares were lit, took my time capturing endless scenes of this great tradition. Sadly, the harbor illumination will not be taking place this year due to COVID-19 restrictions and the very prudent attempts to limit gatherings.  At least we can recall the beauty of this tradition with this image of Abbot hall towering over the homes along Cliff Street with the water of Riverhead reflecting the red glow of the flares.

Summer at the Beach

I mentioned in yesterday's post that last Wednesday's outing led to one of the best sunsets of the year - including an awesome rainbow over the causeway. I shared some of the rainbow shots last week but worked on the rest of the images from that night over the weekend. This is an image from the water's edge at Devereux Beach from when I arrived at 7:30pm. I was pretty happy with the dramatic light and cloud cover. Little did I know just how good the light would get.

Lighting up the Clouds

Last Wednesday proved to be quite the outing and it began with a trip to Chandler Hovey Park in the hopes of capturing an oncoming storm. Before that storm would arrive, I spotted huge cumulus clouds behind Marblehead Light and grabbed this shot of the lighthouse backed by the intricate detail and patterns. The oncoming storm was a bust but the sunset more than made up for it.

Around the Fort

Last Saturday, we headed out with our former neighbor for a dinghy ride around the harbor. As we made our way around the fort, I couldn't help but grab a few images with great light and clouds positioned perfectly above the outcropping of land. With COVID-19 restrictions and the cancelled fireworks show, it really is perfect timing for Fort Sewall's huge renovation. I can't wait to see it when it reopens.

Rainbow Sunset

I was pretty happy after capturing the double rainbow over the causeway but, since the clouds were sticking around, I figured I would wait until the sun set. Exactly 30 minutes after shooting the panorama from the causeway, I was rewarded for my patience with an incredible sunset. You can just make out the last remnants of the rainbow touching the clouds which had reached what I thought was peak color over the Atlantic ocean. I packed up after this shot thinking the light was done and headed back home only to make one more stop when the clouds exploded [...]

Double Rainbow over the Causeway

Finally some great light in Marblehead!!! I haven't had a good outing in weeks and had been frustrated on more than one occasion including earlier today when I went out to Chandler Hovey Park hoping to capture an oncoming storm. As luck would have it, each storm banked north before reaching us and I went home but left my gear in the trunk of the car...just in case. After dinner, I checked the radar and found one more storm had formed and was tracking toward us. I hopped in the car and decided to drive to Devereux Beach where I [...]
