Watching the Boats Pass

While I was capturing scenes of the annual Halloween Race in Marblehead harbor, I spotted a couple of spectators one pier over at the Pleon watching as well. I recomposed the shot I had been taking with boats crossing in front of Abbot Hall to include these two guys watching the boats pass. As luck would have it, the sun came out just as a trio of boats came into the frame and I captured this multilayered image.

Here be Dragons in Marblehead

I first received word of a dragon in Marblehead by email a few weeks ago. Then I spotted the great video by James Maroney of Marblehead Community Access and knew I had to get down to Pleasant Street to view this incredible animatronic work of art.  I arrived a little before 9am and was in awe of the scale of the dragon. It stretches over the garage and across to the house. In the morning, the dragon had not yet woken with its animatronics powered down for the evening. I took a few photos and contacted the owners - Tom [...]

Sunset Colors at Crocker Park

On Friday night, I headed out to Crocker Park hoping that the coming Nor'Easter might produce a nice sunset while also fearing it was my last chance to capture foliage in town. I found little cloud cover over the harbor and quickly ascended the granite hill and set up for this composition of Abbot Hall and the unique view of houses stacked against it. I spotted some color in the trees on either side and waited for the sunset colors to elevate the rest of the scene. Happy Halloween everyone!

Setting Sail

I don't recall the last time I captured an image intending to convert it to black and white. As I captured boats racing on Sunday inside Marblehead Harbor, I had to wait for the sun to poke through clouds. It illuminated both boats and the backdrop most of the time but, during one stretch, the light seemed focused on the boats while Abbot Hall was left in relative darkness under ominous clouds. With light playing center stage in this image, I did not want the colorful sails to distract the viewers eye and so I converted the color image to [...]

Racing by Crocker Park

With Saturday's Nor'Easter, I had just about given up on capturing foliage in Marblehead. With a shortened schedule for the EYC's annual Halloween Race, I headed across the causeway and set up along the Eastern's pier to capture scenes of the colorful boats passing by Crocker Park toward Abbot Hall. As the sun poked through the clouds, Crocker Park lit up behind the boats and I spotted some colorful leaves in the background. I ended up with at least a dozen 'keepers' in the hour or so spent shooting the race but this image of the boats passing by Crocker [...]

Neck and Neck during the Halloween Race

The annual Eastern Yacht Club Halloween Race took place in Marblehead Harbor today and the clouds broke apart just long enough for me to come home with several keepers. The normally two-day event was cut to one by yesterdays Nor'Easter and so sailing took place longer than usual on this last Sunday in October. I had just dropped off my daughter and headed across the Neck where I set up in front of the Eastern Yacht Club for this prime viewing location. I had to wait for the intermittent bursts of light but was thrilled to capture not only the [...]

Portrait Mode

On Saturday, I was shooting boats in the harbor with hints of foliage across the water. As the sun began to set, the sky behind the causeway took on interesting shapes and colors and I turned to capture one of the lamp posts along the causeway. I had rented a lens and was putting it through its paces to see if I might want to purchase it. The lens offered me a 200mm focal length and a very fast f/2.8 aperture and I used that combination to focus on the lamp post. As much would have it, a seagull passed [...]

Blowing in the Wind

I mentioned a couple of days ago that I had gone out on Sunday to capture images of a rapidly disappearing fall foliage around town. My first stop was Marblehead High School where I had last noted some early color a week prior.  I arrived just before 5pm as the sun was illuminating the few trees displaying nice color. As an added bonus the grass in the foreground was lit by sun and blowing in the wind that would pick up periodically. I composed this image to include the grass, trees and the tower of the high school and then [...]

Fall in Marblehead Harbor

On Saturday, I was out hoping to capture scenes of foliage with a lens I had rented for the week. This was as much an exercise for the lens as it was a hope to capture the fewer boats remaining in Marblehead Harbor with spots of foliage as backdrop. Unfortunately, I found more boats than foliage and had to console myself with this shot saved by some interesting clouds overhead and decent lighting. This foliage season seems to have been limited both in duration and color...

Leaves Turn at Memorial Park

On Sunday night, I headed out in search of foliage having realized that the recent cold snaps had made short work of this year's leaf peeping season in Marblehead.  I hit a few spots before turning onto Pleasant Street and noticing the way the setting sun was illuminating the top of the maple tree at Memorial Park. I quickly pulled over, ran out of the car with camera in hand, and captured a few frames before the sun dropped and the light disappeared.
