With every storm, I try to make it out to Castle Rock near high tide to watch the incredible power of Mother Nature as waves crash into the shoreline and explode in plumes of white. With a perfect vantage point on the rock and views North and South, there really is no better place in all of Massachusetts for watching a storm roll in than Castle Rock in Marblehead. Surfs Up – Devereux Beach, Marblehead

It's not often that we get great surfing waves in Marblehead but, when they arrive, Devereux Beach can get crowded with surfers very quickly. As post-tropical storm Hermine churned off the coast, she sent strong waves heading West right toward Devereux Beach. I had expected rain and grey clouds to accompany the storm but it stayed far enough off shore to produce a beautiful warm day in Marblehead with strong (but not overpowering) winds. Last Light on Ram’s Island

This seemed like the perfect photo to end the week. On July 23rd, I headed out at sunset to Preston Beach chasing a storm and wound up capturing an incredible pink sky with lightning bolts in front of rainbows (that sounds made up but it wasn't). Before any of that happened, I was treated to some interesting cloud formations and incredibly calm waters. Read the Sign at Redd’s Pond

How many of you have noticed the sign at Redd's Pond? How many have actually read it??? I visited this iconic New England pond a few weeks ago and spent most of my time at the water's edge capturing the clouds reflecting in the still water. As I walked towards the car, I looked back and saw this composition of the sign leading the viewer's eye towards the pond and the red house across the way. The pier at the Pleon Yacht Club is one of my favorite spots for capturing a Marblehead sunset as it offers a clear view towards both Abbot Hall and our lighthouse with various compositions of boats to be found in between. On Wednesday night, I had headed out to Crocker Park as sunset neared hoping for some good light to shine behind Abbot Hall. While the light built up to a peak looking back toward town, I kept looking over my shoulder at the developing golden glow on Marblehead Harbor. Marblehead School Year has Begun

I dropped off my son at the Marblehead Community Charter Public School this morning and was excited to capture the annual ceremony declaring that the Marblehead school year has begun. I learned today that Glover's Regiment has been firing this salute to start the school year since 1995. This year the location was moved closer to the school which made for a much better photo opportunity than last year in the field.

This morning, the Marblehead Community Charter Public School will start the school year with a bang (or actually five) as the Glover's Regiment fires a five gun salute to open the academic calendar. I first witnessed this Marblehead tradition last year as my son entered fourth grade. I'll be returning this morning for the start of his fifth grade school year and this uniquely Marblehead way to start the school year.

Paddling past Boston

I captured this image of a stand up paddleboarder almost exactly four years ago. I had gone out on what would turn out to be a lackluster Summer evening and almost gave up on any shots when I spotted someone taking off from Devereux Beach. With smooth strokes, the lone SUP made his way through the calm water of the Atlantic Ocean. I thought the lone figure in the middle of the ocean brought a sense of scale to the shot and especially when seen paddling past Boston seen in the background.

St Andrews Church in Marblehead

In November 2011, I was exploring new locations for capturing foliage and ended up at St Andrews Church on Lafayette Street. I stopped my bike when I reached this spot and composed an image to capture the bright red sign and tower beyond. I kept meaning to inquire about climbing the tower to explore vantage points but never did. I'll have to correct that in the near future...
