Lone Boat and Abbot Hall

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had been going out more at sunset with the gradual shift in light.  This image comes from Saturday night and a trip to Parker Lane. I've photographed from this Public Way countless times and am constantly surprised by just how different the scene can appear depending on light, tide and choice of composition.  This image was taken at the peak of light which you can see reflecting nicely in the water of Marblehead Harbor.  I wanted to focus on the lone boat and Abbot Hall but included the steeples of St. Michaels Church [...]

Golden Light and Blue Water

Over the past few days, the quality of light has subtly changed to reflect the fact that Spring has finally arrived.  While the temperatures could stand to be a bit warmer and while I await the cherry blossoms in town to reach peak bloom, I haven't been able to help but go out to shoot the sunset these past few nights. Last night I was treated to a very nice show from Parker Lane.  Tonight I decided to head to Foster Street in the hopes that the light might be nice both toward Abbot Hall as well as back up [...]

Flying over Marblehead Neck and the Causeway

Almost exactly three years ago, I ventured up in a Cessna with a friend to capture scenes of Marblehead from the ultimate 'rooftop'.  I had recently come up with the Rooftop Thursday series and was thrilled when a friend invited me to Beverly Airport for a flight over the North Shore. As I explained previously, unexpected winds started to blow shortly before takeoff and made an already nervous passenger grip his armrest for dear life.  Between small bouts of turbulence that felt much bigger in a small plane, I managed a few shots of Marblehead as it crossed below. This [...]

Under the Milky Way at Castle Rock

By |2016-11-06T12:04:07-05:00April 22nd, 2015|Categories: Night|Tags: , , , , |

On Saturday at 2:30am, I left the house in hopes of capturing the Milky Way over Marblehead.  I started off by heading to Fort Sewall and already shared an image of the Milky Way over the harbor, neck and Marblehead Light's green beacon.  Once I finished there, I headed across the causeway hoping to find a spot with less light pollution. I ended up at Castle Rock at 4:00am and set about trying a few compositions.  A standard horizontal image couldn't quite take in the enormity of the scene so I rotated the camera and took seven vertical images that [...]

Framing the Sunset

By |2015-04-19T20:02:13-04:00April 21st, 2015|Categories: Beach|Tags: , |

On Friday night, I borrowed a wide angle lens from a friend in order to shoot the Milky Way later that night/early the next morning.  With a new lens in hand, I couldn't help looking for something to shoot and drove around town as the sun slowly set and clouds moved across the sky until I settled on Devereux Beach as the best vantage point. I photographed the ocean for a while as the clouds began to take on the pink hue of sunset and then quickly walked up to the pavilion and placed the tripod close to the ground.  I [...]

Marblehead Harbor and Dawn’s Early Glow

Switching gears from this weekend's midnight photo outing to capture the Milky Way, I thought a nice dawn shot from Summer 2013 would help dispel the dreary, rainy day we have in store.  This is the last of eight images captured on the morning of August 3rd in what would turn out to be a truly amazing sunrise. Hope you enjoy this warm start to Patriot's Day. Here are the other seven images captured on this morning in Marblehead:

The Milky Way over Marblehead Light

By |2016-11-06T12:04:07-05:00April 18th, 2015|Categories: Night|Tags: , , , , , |

I never thought I would be able to capture the Milky Way over Marblehead.  With our proximity to Boston and the amount of light pollution in the night sky, shooting the Milky Way seemed to be a task reserved for photographers in Maine or the Cape.  However, after seeing some truly awesome images from last month's new moon of the Milky Way and with perfect conditions on Friday night/Saturday morning, I figured I would give it a shot. The first stop was borrowing the right lens for the task and I could not have picked a better person to reach out [...]

Race Around the Swim Marker in Marblehead Harbor

By |2015-04-13T21:37:47-04:00April 16th, 2015|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , |

On a warm Summer night, I visited Crocker Park in hopes of capturing a beautiful sunset over Marblehead Harbor.  The sunset never did materialize but, just before 7:00pm, I heard a splash and spotted two kids racing toward the swim marker.  I managed to capture them as they made their way around the marker and back toward the float. It won't be much longer before kids of all ages are jumping into Marblehead Harbor.

Cold Water and Warm Sunsets

While this image was captured in December 2014, you would be hard pressed to differentiate the view from one in Summer.  We had a fairly mild start to what would turn into a record-breaking Winter and I had gone out on this evening to photograph at Devereux Beach. The cold water got me a few times as I set up to capture this warm December sunset looking out over Marblehead Neck.
