Pier to Nowhere

Has it really been three years since the new Stramski pier was built and, yet, it remains unused? I captured the newly built pier in May 2012 but a number of issues have delayed its opening to date.  I'm hoping the pier can finally open to the public this season...

Lined Up and Ready to Sail

By |2016-11-06T12:04:07-05:00April 13th, 2015|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , |

After this perfect weekend, I thought it fitting to look ahead to warmer days and a full Marblehead harbor. This image was taken on September 9 during an unusually low tide that allowed me to wade deep into the harbor.  I was able to capture a few unique compositions from this vantage point including this one of boats lined up and ready to sail.

Walking on Water in Little Harbor

By |2015-04-05T21:36:51-04:00April 10th, 2015|Categories: Little Harbor|Tags: , , |

In early December 2011, I was at Fort Sewall shooting Marblehead Light and the harbor when I walked around to the North side with views of Gerry Island.  I spotted two people making their way across Little Harbor via the land bridge that connects the island to land at low tide.  As the tide had come in at this point, the land bridge seemed to have disappeared and the people seemed to be walking on water. It's such a unique site seen from afar but, in the Summer, this is a fairly regular occurrence as most people who make their [...]

Crocker Park and Marblehead Neck from atop Abbot Hall

There's something about seeing the Town of Marblehead from above that quite literally changes your perspective of areas you've visited countless times.  This image comes from my journey up the scaffolding surrounding Abbot Hall tower in early December. I've shared a number of images from this unique position so far which serve to highlight the layout of the town and its iconic buildings.  Here you can see Crocker Park encircled by houses and a mere stone's throw from Marblehead Neck and the lighthouse across the harbor.

A Study in Waves at Castle Rock

By |2016-11-06T12:04:07-05:00April 7th, 2015|Categories: Beach|Tags: , |

The running theme this week may well be the 'way back machine' as this image also comes from 2012 - May 16 to be precise.  I had just purchased the Canon 5D mk III full frame camera to replace my aging Canon 50D and was out on a foggy day putting the new gear through its paces. I found myself at Castle Rock watching as wave after wave crashed onto the rocky shore.  I tried to time this exposure to capture the wave at its peak formation before it began to curl into itself and slam into the rocks. Three [...]

Watching the Moon Rise from Fort Beach

By |2016-11-06T12:04:07-05:00April 6th, 2015|Categories: moon|Tags: , , , , |

Watching the moon rise always involves a delicate balance of perfect timing - clear skies, agreeable work schedule, an understanding wife and kids and lack of other commitments.  With that being said, I last had a chance to capture the full moon rising over Marblehead in January.  On Friday night, April's pink moon was due to rise but nearly everything kept me from being able to capture it.  I therefore present you the Sturgeon moon rising over Marblehead Light from a shoot in August 2012. I started off shooting the full moon from Fort Sewall and shared that image shortly [...]

A Look Back at March

In like a lion...a very cold, white lion who just didn't want to give up on Winter's best.  Spring finally arrived in Marblehead - here's a look back at March.  Catch up on last month's images including a glimpse of the aurora borealis from Chandler Hovey Park. Under the Bridge

Another converted infrared image from a bike ride around town on June 15, 2014.  This image was taken 30 minutes before the one at Redd's Pond as I made my way along the rail trail towards downtown. I've shot from under this bridge previously but, this time, was interested in the effect that infrared would have in highlighting the foliage along the trail and some of the graffiti below the bridge. Can't wait for the weather to warm up and all the snow to melt so that I can head out on my bike again.

Gerry Island in the Fog

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00April 2nd, 2015|Categories: Island|Tags: , , |

Continuing this week's black and white theme comes this image from May 5, 2012.  We had fog again to coincide with the carnival being in town and I had been shooting at Fort Sewall when I looked out and noted it was high tide.  I quickly made my way down Fort Beach Lane and to this location where I could shoot Gerry Island in the fog. I decided to take advantage of the thick fog and leave a lot of negative space above the island to add to the mood of isolation.  You can just make out a reflection of [...]
