Sunset over Gerry Island

By |2014-04-20T17:06:58-04:00July 11th, 2011|Categories: Island|Tags: , , , , |

I had the opportunity to shoot Gerry Island a few weeks ago and managed to choose a night when the sun set near low tide.  I watched as the path emerged from the water and formed a gentle S curve to guide the eye to the small island.  Watch for a panorama view of this scene on Wednesday showing Little Harbor, Brown's Island and the homes along Front Street.

Keep it Local – 5 Corners Kitchen

As part of a series focusing on businesses in Marblehead, I had the opportunity to photograph 5 Corners Kitchen on a recent Wednesday.  For those who haven't eaten here yet, I can't describe the food any better than Chef Barry Edelman has: "whatever’s good, whatever’s fresh, whatever’s local".  The location is great, atmosphere is fun and the food really is incredible.

The Grand Finale

After shooting the beginning of the fireworks display from the rocks at Fort Sewall, I made my way back toward the fort with an idea for the grand finale.  As expected, the conclusion of the fireworks show was intense with a rapid succession of fireworks going off.  I used the great tree as cover to shield the camera from the brightest parts of the explosions and hoped that I could get a long enough exposure to again show the crowd watching in rapt attention. As the fireworks display is privately funded, I will be donating 20% of the proceeds from [...]

Fireworks over the Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:06:29-05:00July 6th, 2011|Categories: Fireworks|Tags: , , , , , , |

Marblehead was recently voted in the top 15 for locations to watch fireworks on the Fourth of July.  Looking at this scene of people gathered on the rocks of Fort Sewall with the light of the fireworks balanced by the lighthouse and flares illuminating the harbor, it really is no wonder.  The fireworks committee put on a great show again this year which went off on schedule despite the threat of storms in the area. As the fireworks display is privately funded, I will be donating 20% of the proceeds from sales of any past and future fireworks images towards [...]

Light up the Harbor

By |2013-06-06T22:28:23-04:00July 5th, 2011|Categories: Fireworks|Tags: , , , , , |

As a prelude to the fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July, the Marblehead harbor is illuminated with flares.  I'm not sure when this tradition began but the illumination rivals the fireworks display.  Bright red flares, placed by volunteers, line the entire harbor and are set off at 8:45pm.  I decided to shoot from Front Street beach as the tide was low and I could put the ever-present row boats in the frame.  You can see the flares lining the Neck and Chandler Hovey park as well.

It’s Going to be a Good Day

By |2016-11-06T12:06:29-05:00July 1st, 2011|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , , , , , |

After the purple dawn, a deep red sky, a rising red sun, and crossing over the lighthouse, the sun finished its ascent to start a wonderful Summer day. This the last of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the Marblehead Festival of the Arts as well as a showing of my photos at Lost + Found in Five Corners.  Lost + Found will be having a reception on Saturday, July 2nd from 6:30-9:30 - I hope to see you there and meet some of my readers in person!

Doing the Moondance

After the purple dawn, a deep red sky and a rising red sun, the sun crossed behind the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey park.  It wasn't until I arrived home that I was able to make out the name of the boat in the foreground...Moondance.  The irony of a boat named after the moon lined up with the rising sun is made more so by the shot I have of the Supermoon that almost exactly mirrors the sun position. This the fourth of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my [...]

The Sun Also Rises

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00June 29th, 2011|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , , , , |

Following the purple dawn and a deep red sky, the sun began its slow ascent just to the left of the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey park.  This was shot from Hammond park and the clouds were doing a great job of magnifying this already amazing scene.  I can't believe my good fortune to have those wisps of clouds line the red sun as it made its way up. This the third of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the Marblehead Festival of the Arts as [...]

Let There Be Light

Following a few minutes after yesterday's view of a purple dawn, the sky turned a deep red that was reflected by the boats in the harbor.  The clouds formed an incredible shape that looked a bit like the eye of a hurricane as they slowly drifted by.  I was fortunate that the wind was minimal as it allowed for a longer exposure that served to accentuate the saturation of the entire scene. This the second of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the [...]
