Dawn of a New Day

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00June 27th, 2011|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , , , |

I really wanted to shoot a sunrise but just could not fathom the 4am wakeup that would be required.  That is until I woke last Wednesday at exactly 4am without an alarm clock and figured it must be a sign.  I had plotted out the sunrise 'just in case' and realized Hammond Park would offer the best vantage point.  I set up and watched as the dawn broke spreading a purple glow over the harbor filled with boats. This will be the first of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way [...]

Welcome to the Town of Marblehead

At the corner of Lafayette and Maple stands a sign welcoming visitors to the Town of Marblehead and proclaiming this as the birthplace of the American Navy.  A dropped anchor lies in the grassy median before it and I have been searching for a way to depict this scene.  When I noted the flowers on the nearby shrub, I knew the opportunity had arrived.  I stood across the street and shot this during breaks in traffic.  The first obstacle was a yield sign that had to be removed.  The second was turning this photo into something a bit 'more'. A Sunset Between Storms

By |2013-06-06T22:25:38-04:00June 20th, 2011|Categories: Sunset|Tags: , , , , , |

A few weeks ago, an amazing thunderstorm barreled through town.  Between bursts of lightning, wind, and rain, I noticed an incredible sunset developing.  Ran out of the house and made my way to Parker Lane on the neck.  For those who don't know, Parker Lane is one of the Public Ways in town.  I walked down to the water and grabbed this shot as the light become more vivid with each passing moment.  I liked how the light on Abbot's clock tower illuminates it in the same colors as those of the sunset surrounding it. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-s [...]

The Steinway and the Mansion

By |2013-06-06T22:25:20-04:00June 15th, 2011|Categories: Landmark|Tags: , , , |

Ever since I sat in this room with my daughter watching a ballet recital, I've wanted to come back and capture the beauty of this scene.  The beautiful Steinway & Sons piano stands on a polished hard wood floor with a view of Hooper Street and old town through the three windows above.  The brass machinery of the piano is seen as a reflection on the opened lid.  Below you can see the rest of the ballroom with its classic chandelier in the center of the room.

The Green Room and the Wine Cellar

The King Hooper Mansion dates back to the early 1700's and has been meticulously cared for throughout the nearly 300 years of its existence.  It is now the home to the Marblehead Arts Association and the rooms are used to show member artists' works.  The photo above depicts how the wine cellar would have looked sometime in the 1700's with the window looking out toward the well cared for garden.  Below is one of the rooms on the second floor.  I was fortunate to have the chance to shoot it between showings and, therefore, bring out the beauty in the [...]

Keep it Local – Flores Mantilla

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00June 8th, 2011|Categories: Keep it Local|Tags: , , , , , |

This is the first entry in a series that will focus on Marblehead businesses.  I visited the Flores Mantilla flower shop (link to website) on May 8th to pick up an arrangement for my wife in honor of Mother's day.  Though I had passed the shop many times, this was my first opportunity to marvel at the outdoor and indoor display of flowers.  After purchasing the bouquet, I asked Nancy if she would mind my photographing her shop for this site.  On a recent Wednesday morning, I had the chance to do so and was rewarded with some nice light. [...]

The Lightning show at Devereux Beach

By |2016-05-05T13:00:27-04:00June 6th, 2011|Categories: Storm|Tags: , , , , , |

I had just remarked to my wife about the relative paucity of lightning and thunderstorms in Marblehead when a monster of a storm swept through town.  I tried to capture shots of lightning at Chandler Hovey park within the safety of the lighthouse initially.  After that failed, I drove by Devereux and witnessed explosions of light to the south.  For the next hour, I tried to capture the power and beauty of this storm as the number of spectators rapidly grew.  At times, the show rivaled our fireworks display in the number of bursts.  In the shot above, mother nature [...]

Memorial Day at Waterside Cemetery

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00June 1st, 2011|Categories: Cemetery|Tags: , , , |

As part of Marblehead's Memorial day tributes, flags are placed at the gravesites of soldiers who gave their lives defending this country.  I visited Waterside cemetery after the flags were placed and found myself in this square plot dedicated to Post 82 and lined by two cannons at the entrance and two others flanking it. I received this information from Sean via Facebook: John Goodwin Post 82 was the local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the veteran's organization of, by, and for Union Civil War Veterans. Through most of the latter part of 19th century and [...]

The Privateer Lynx comes to town

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00May 25th, 2011|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , , , , , |

This week saw the Lynx come to town.  The Lynx is a tall ship inspired by one that fought in the war of 1812.  She came to Marblehead harbor on a foggy Wednesday afternoon and was greeted by a throng of spectators watching from Fort Sewall as well as wind and rain.  She fired off six cannon shots as she made her way to the harbor in response to rifle fire from the Marblehead regiment.  This image was taken during one of those shots and puts the tall ship in the context of our iconic lighthouse. Technical: Canon 50D and [...]

Island in the Fog – The Reshoot

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00May 19th, 2011|Categories: Island|Tags: , , , , , |

Thank you everyone for your comments on yesterday's post both here and on Facebook.  While this began as a personal project to 'shoot the town', I am thrilled that these images have made an impression on you.  The vote tally clearly favored the 'no boat' crowd and, as luck would have it, we still had plenty of fog to work with.  I shot the above while waiting for the tall ship Lynx (that photo next week).  Used a filter to block the light so that the image above results from five shots at 25 seconds each.  No boats to remove [...]
